The Icebreaker Men's BodyFit 200 Zone Short will quickly become your go-to underwear for backcountry skiing, summer backpacking, and alpine climbing. Its merino wool provides lightweight thermal regulation, natural odor-resistance, and plenty of breathability. Icebreaker added Lycra for stretch, and a gusseted construction ensures freedom of movement. There are also mesh panels for enhanced ventilation, and smooth flatlock seams reduce chafing on the long days.

What do you think about this product?

    Have questions about this product?

    flawed, gimmicky, overpriced

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

Plus: No bunching and great fabric.
Meh: ventilation zone seems more gimmick than function, esp since ventilation fabric is not in sweaty crotch.
Con: no little extra fabric to create a pouch/cup for guy parts, too plastered (which is a very strange error considering there is a seam up center front and it would've been easy for them to have cut fabric slightly differently to create a pouch).
Though I praise the fabric and no bunching, I feel: A. the absence of ventilating fabric in the sweaty crotch in this supposedly "zoned" theme; B. the failure to allocate more fabric to form some amount of guy-parts cup; and C. the China production yet still priced as if it were Kiwi or US production, I have to summarize as flawed, gimmicky and overpriced. Redesign required before I'd spend $$$ to test another.

    Hey there Dave,
You've certainly made some great points above. I think the product description is a bit misleading - it is definitely meant to be worn over a pair of our boxer briefs. The zone fabric is located across the lower back where we typically put out a lot of heat during high rates of movement or exercise. I think you'd be really happy trying out a pair of our boxer briefs, (available in a long inseam!) which I think you'd prefer since you're 6'3". Please let me know if you have any questions about Icebreaker in the future!
    Sincerely,
    Sydney

    UPDATE AFTER 9 MONTHS
The ventilation fabric used in the lower back is too weak. I have tears developing in the lower-lumbar ventilation fabric simply from the process of taking them on an off. If you buy these and you have big strong thighs, you're going to have to first pull the legs up into place and then pull the waist on up. Treat that weak ventilation fabric with care because it is fragile. These still need more junk room. Maybe ventilation in gusseted crotch. Maybe just toss out the ventilation fabric altogether. The main fabric used over most of the shorts that does not have the ventilation holes is really truly excellent. They could make the whole shorts (with a little more junk room) out of the main fabric and these would be excellent. The thigh grip (so they don't crawl up) is also quite awesome. Great potential here but this first version is seriously flawed. The ventilation gimmick is going from bad to worse as that weak ventilation fabric is now developing running holes while the rest the garment is going strong. Epic fail on gimmick, weak fabric and excessively squished junk.
My advice to guys out there: Don't buy. Wait for a future gimmick-free version using the awesome primary merino/lycra blend all over. And/or if there is an alternate future ventilated-crotch version, that'll probably be worth a try also.

Perfect compromise vs 3/4 or full cut

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

It isn't always necessary to wear a ton of layers below the belt and I find these shorts coupled with a taller ski sock to be perfect for warmer days under a light softshell when skiing/touring. Great Merino/Lycra blend, very comfortable and irritant free seams. No chaffing here and very efficient insulation without sponging up sweat when your breathing gets heavy. I look forward to using these on cooler days when wading or around the fire when you need just a little more warmth. Easy to couple these with a full length long john if you need a little extra warmth for the chairlift and they layer easily without bunching. Icebreaker makes a great product and this is a nice option to have and regulates temperature and moisture very well.
