Keep it classy.

Let the always-stylin’, always-classy, and always-luxurious merino threads in Icebreaker’s Aspiring Zip Fleece Jacket keep you warm this fall and winter. Made with ultra-soft Realfleece merino wool (Icebreaker’s fuzzy alternative to synthetic fleece), the Aspiring Fleece Jacket functions as an outer layer for cool days and an insulating mid-layer on days when the cool turns to cold.
  • Merino wool’s natural fibers provide excellent insulation and resist odors, and unlike traditional, long-cut wool fibers, merino wool’s fine-cut fibers are soft to the touch
  • 320g / m2 fabric rating balances excellent wind protection, internal breathability, and temperature regulation—so you stay warm without overheating
  • Zippered front pockets help keep your keys from migrating from your jacket to the sofa cushions
  • Icebreaker makes its products in a way that supports New Zealand farmers, ensures overall welfare of the sheep, and promotes sustainable manufacturing practices

Great piece!

This is real fleece, not the synthetic fleece made from plastic. It is a nice medium to heavyweight addition to the wardrobe. The fit is slim so keep that in mind for sizing purposes.

Pros: It's merino wool, so it has the usual great properties. Insulates well, even when wet. Breathes well. Doesn't stink even after some heavy usage. This piece is also more windproof than my other synthetic fleeces though it won't hold up as well as a shell.

Cons: Not really a con, but it is slim fitting so it barely goes over my beer belly. :) That fact should be kept in mind when selecting the correct size.

Overall this is a very nice fleece piece. It's nice to have fleece that is actually fleece and is very functional at the same time.

Nice!

I got this fleece from Backcountry, great site, costumer service, shipping was excellent. The fleece is really nice looking, well made, i love merino wool, and a fan of Icebreaker brand. The fit is a bit weird im a solid medium, chest fits good, sleeves a bit long around the belly is tight, but the looks of the coat makes up for the weird fit.

Very good for layering

Very good for layering.
Good breathability.
Good build quality, great styling.
Super useful chest zip pocket
Not good for wind blocking. Recommend a wind breaker or goretex over it if wind chill is significant.

I am asian about 1.65m tall, slim build, so the size and cutting are slightly bigger then the standard small. Would be perfect if it has a slim cut or form fitting.

How does this jacket perform in heavy brush, meaning, does it snag on thorns, etc...?

Responded on

It is 100% merino so it will not be as tough as a shell in heavy brush. But it is a beefy fabric so it will hold up better than you think. If you are going into very gnarly terrain just throw a shell on over it.

It's okay..if you don't move

I purchased a number of Icebreaker garments before committing to this "piece" and I was immediately disappointed by this so-called performance jacket. First of all (and this is the honest truth), when I hold my arms straight out to my sides this jacket lifts up so much it exposes my belly button because the shoulders are cut like that of a blazer, resulting in a very restricted range of motion. This is not a good attribute for the active lifestyle. Also, unlike conventional fleece this jacket has very little stretch which only makes the poor design more evident. I'm 5'9" 160, and tried going with the medium which has always fit me in other Icebreaker tops. This jacket sports a left-sided zipper which I don't like on men's clothing. There is also an oddly prominent tuxedo butt and I don't understand the purpose of that. I get the idea of trim contemporary styling but even my family of Icebreaker lovers had nothing good to say about the fit of this top when I showed it to them and they were convinced I was sent a women's jacket by accident. It's very slim in the chest, waist, and especially the hips, yet the shoulders are quite broad and the sleeves are baggy and long. The fabric is soft next to the skin but the black exterior is a little glossier than you might expect.

For the record, I really like Icebreaker clothing and still use it and recommend it. This garment is just a very poor design to the degree that the company should never have sold any of these until changes were made. If you look at other reviews online you'll see similar complaints about this garment. I had read them prior to purchasing but my confidence in Icebreaker got the better of me this time.

Sooooo Comfortable

This is seriously the most comfortable, soft, non itchy, non fuzzy, fleece that I have ever worn. The fit is fantastic for me. It is not boxy. More on the slim side I should say. It almost feels like a finely tailored, fitted shirt. I am pretty slim. 5'9" and about 140. 30ish" waist and maybe a 38ish" chest. A small fits me better than any other jacket I have worn. It is not the warmest, but then again, it is a lighter weight fleece. Ideal as a mid layer, fall/spring stand alone, or sexy casual. Not a good stand alone for sitting in 30 F and below during a football game.

How much it weights? How windproof would it be as a stand alone piece? Thanks!

Responded on

I am not sure on the exact weight, but I think it is somewhere between 100-200. It is more windproof than other fleeces. It thicker and denser: keeps out more wind. It would not keep out gale force mountain winds. But it doesn't feel like you are not wearing anything when the wind blows.

Fantastic Jacket

This is my first Icebreaker jacket and I love it. I am 5'9", 165 lb and the medium fits perfect. It looks super sharp and is so comfy, definitely happy with this purchase.

what's the difference between the aspiring and ascent jackets?

Responded on

Different wool fabric is used in each jacket. The Aspiring is lofted and 'fleecy' while the ascent is closer to the standard merino in other Icebreaker garments - just thicker. The Aspiring is also slightly wind resistant. The Aspiring will be a little warmer; the ascent will be a little more breathable.

Is stealth a dark grey color or is it blue-ish?

Responded on

To me, it looks more grey than blue. Great fleece though, I take it everywhere with me.

i wonder if i should get a L or X L? i'm 6'4'' and 185 lbs. chest measures 41 or 42. i have an icebreaker superfine ultralite tea shirt that fits well and is an XL

Responded on

I just bought one of these yesterday - and decided to go up one size. At a slim-ish 6'3 175lb, I always went M with every other IB T and sweater so far (I have a lot of Icebreaker - way too much!) Trying it on it felt a bit tighter and less stretchy in the shoulder area and unless I had just a T (i.e., a long sleeve button shirt) it would get bunchy and uncomfortable - so I went with a large for layering purposes. Its still not too bulky. Im a borderline M-L so begin a little bigger you may be a L-XL border. You can always order both and send right back! (or try on for size at a local retail shop first)!
