Good hoodie

I wear this shirt often it's a really good in-between weather shirt and keeps you warm. I'm 6'3 190 and for my height and size it fits really well, the sleeves are longer than normal and it has a lean fit. I did have issues with quality however, shortly after buying this a few small holes developed around an elbow sleeve. For the price I paid this should never happen.

Great for cool fall and spring day

    • Size Bought: Large

I now have three of these, which work well in cool weather with a wool t-shirt base layer or in winter with a shell. Close but not tight fitting. All the advantages of wool--almost stink-free, dries fast, retains thermal qualities when wet.

Love it, love it, love it.

I was pretty nervous paying this much for something like this, but it's become my go-to lightweight 2nd layer for a lot of activities. Trail running, mountain biking, keeping the chill off in our cold house, etc. The front of the hood definitely comes up to my upper lip when it's all zipped up, so don't expect a cotton hoodie fit in any aspect.

I got the dark grey and it works well when a cotton hoodie would look a little too casual. I felt like I was between sizes, and I got the large. The sleeves are a bit long, but that's true to size for a large, so I wasn't surprised. I could have gone with a medium and still been happy. I wear this a lot.

    Fresh prince of Bel-thin-air

Just like a lot of my favorite indie films, this Hooded Indie from Ibex is a classic. This is probably one of my most used garments in my arsenal next to my Patagonia R1. The R1 and Indie both have their specific uses, but as for the Ibex Indie, it is best used as a base layer. If you have never owned a merino wool base layer before, I recommend starting with this piece. It features a great ''scuba'' hood, thumb loops and a good length front zipper for cooling off, or zipping up when you want a little more warmth and coverage. The zipper and hood goes right up to your chin and really keeps in place even while you're running or climbing. Another plus that I love about this garment is how quickly it dries and how well it keeps smells at bay. I've completely drenched this hoody in cool temps (30's and 40's) and this thing still dries out in a flash. I've used it as a base layer during a winter climb in the Talkeetna Mountains, and I've used it as a main layer while trail running, you really can't go wrong. I'm 6ft, 185lbs, and chest 41-42'' and I wear a size Large. This garment runs more on the slim side which I personally prefer especially for a base layer.

This Ibex Hooded Wool Indie Top is great. With the Ibex Hooded Wool Indie Top you get a solidly crafted top what has wonderful fabric. I have used my Ibex Hooded Wool Indie Top for about 6 months now and have grown to love it and grab it each time I hit the wilderness. Stitching is perfect, fabric is tough yet feels good and the fit is a great blend between athletic and normal. Most of Ibex's gear is made in the USA, with his one being made in Canada. With this being hand crafted the price reflects that, along with being mostly Made in the USA. Berz Rating: 100/100

    close but no cigar

Like the product but it was a slimmer fit than I care for. I am 5'11 180. Looking for the perfect hoodie to help me make it through our mild Texas winters. I think it would make a nice mid-layer, a pricey one though. I think you would want pockets. Everything needs some place to put something. Sent it back. Maybe I was asking too much but whatevs, I said I was looking for the perfect hoodie.

      Love it!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

My husband loves this. It's the perfect layering piece. Thin and light weight but warm when you need it. Thumb loops and hood help it block out cold and it still looks good hanging out in town.

How does this compare to the R1 hoody as a technical base/midlayer?

      Best Answer

R1 will be a lot warmer than the Indie. Merely comparing the weight of the fabric, the Indie uses 195 g/m2 fabric, whereas R1 is 6.8 oz/yard^2 fabric according to Patagonia website, which is roughly 230 g/m2. But more than just the weight, the inside of R1 is gridded fleece, which creates air pockets and helps trap more heat. The Indie fabric on the other hand is flat.

I can't comment on how the breathability compares though, and how warm they will keep you while wet.

Another point of comparison is how high the zipper comes up to. R1's collar comes up to just below the nose (yep, I have the men's version), whereas Indie's zipper comes to the chin (this is from women's version).

I own both the R1 hoody and the Ibex Hooded Indie, and have used them both for identical activities from strenuous hiking, to Nordic skiing, to running, and they both have their strong points. Comparatively the Indie is a layer I would use when I know I need something that will dry very quickly and that I will be sweating in profusely. I say this because I've found the Ibex Indie to keep odors at bay longer than the R1, and to be a lighter weight than the R1. I think what it all comes down to, and is the reason why I own both, is it depends on what type of activity you are using it for, and the conditions you are going to put it though. I use the R1 when I know it's going to be windy, colder, and when I want something that can cover my face like a balaclava. I use the Ibex Indie when I'm going to go for a run on a cool day, or when I'm doing a strenuous hike and want something a little more breathable than the R1. They both have a trim fit, they both have thumb loops, both garments have a lifetime warranty, and they both have hoods (the R1 has more coverage than the Indie), but ultimately, for comparison, it all depends on the conditions and how breathable or how warm you need your layer to be.
