The compact Hydro Photon SteriPEN is a high-tech way to quickly purify your water. Using similar UV treatment techniques found in water bottling plants and hospitals, the SteriPEN destroys 99.99% of bacteria, viruses, Giardia, and other nasty little bugs that wreak havoc on your stomach. If you've ever experienced Montezuma's revenge (a.k.a. traveler's diarrhea), you and your tummy will find the SteriPEN a welcome addition to your travel essentials. Here's how it works: Dip the Steri-Pen in any vessel containing up to 16oz of clear water. When the device's liquid sensor detects water, the germicidal UV lamp comes on and administers a 38-48 second dose. The water is gently stirred until the UV lamp goes off indicating a completed treatment. It's that simple! No messy pumps, no gross tasting tablets—just a UV pen. Requires one of the following batteries: 4AA, NiMH, or Lithium ion 1.5V.

We took the Steri Pen into the jungle of Ecuador where we spent a week helping an NGO with a project to install solar electricity in a remote Shuar Indian Pueblo. The only drinking water available was straight from the river. Since we had to carry packs for several hours hiking into the village, we didn’t want to take a cumbersome water filter system. The Steri Pen was lightweight, functioned perfectly, and we were able to drink the river water without anyone getting sick.

My boyfriend and I love backpacking, camping, hiking...you name it we'll do it. So when we watched a program on public television about the Steripen we thought it would be great. Well we got it this Christmas and it's awesome! There are several websites on the internet that have done experiments with the Steripen that show how effective it is in killing harmful bacteria, viruses ect. What makes this product even better is that it was invented right here in the good old state of Maine.

Easy to use. Fast. Effective. Recommend you just go with the lithium batteries. Recommend that you use a piece of cheese cloth to quickly filter away stream sediment from getting into your water bottle.

I purchased the SteriPEN shortly before going to Costa Rica for two weeks. The SteriPEN is light, packable and you don’t need to buy expensive replacement filters (only 4 AA batteries!) Another plus is that there is no wait time like the salt brine unit from MSR.
I used it several times and did not get sick. That was water from a small stream in the rainforest. I encountered an older man who was pretty dehydrated so I used the SteriPEN to come up with some clean drinking water fast. The only thing you need to think about when using the SteriPEN, is that you need a container to collect water in, and then another to purify in, otherwise you have unpurified water on the rim.
