The HighGear TrailDrop is a featherweight digital compass with a host of useful extras, including a thermometer and chronograph. The TrailDrop's negligible one ounce weight hangs effortlessly from your pack, jacket, or belt loop with its handy webbing-key ring attachment. When ready for use, it reliably points you on your way with a leveling bubble, 1-degree resolution, adjustable declination, and 16 direction pointers. And you won't want to find yourself outside the TrailDrop's 0.1-degree resolution temperature range: from –4F to 131F! The backlit face also contains several alarms, time with double time zones, date and day, a timer, and a chronograph with laps and splits. It's just as useful at the track as it is deep in the backcountry. Should you drop it poolside or fording a glacial stream, the TrailDrop remains secure with its 10-meter water resistancy.

Bottom Line: Don't leave trail without it!

okay, I got the back off and the new batteries. Now, how do I get the old batteries out? Talk about complicated!

Not for people with gloved hands or big fingers. Cheap construction, navigation bezel spins!! No direction on how to change batteries but there are 6 tiny Phillips heads on the back that I bet have to come off!

Received the trail drop compass as a gift and, of course, misplaced tiny directions. Could not figure out how to set clocks and alarms. HighGear website is non-responsive when you ask for assist or to download directions. Stick with a whiskey compass.

Remove the back cover and replace with two SR936SW batteries. If you are not comfortable removing the back cover yourself, you can have a jeweler do it, as well as replace the batteries (they will usually do this for free at chain jewelry stores).

Great in theory, but not built for the long haul

Really enjoyed having the Trail Drop for about 2-3 weeks, but it wasn't up to the punishment that you might expect that something built for the outdoors would need to endure. The manufacturer would do well to, at minimum, consider a cushioned case that the piece could fit in, so that it wouldn't be so easily rendered useless. Batteries are HARD to replace, too.
