Why We Like The Hestra Army Leather GORE-TEX Mitten

Your Hestra Army Leather Gore-Tex Mittens put up a solid line of defense against Old Man Winter. Low-bulk yet incredibly warm Fiberfill insulation keeps your digits toasty and dry while you're hotlapping lift-accessed pow, and the Gore-Tex insert fights off soggy Northwest storms. The gauntlet closure fits over your jacket and cinches with a drawcord to seal out snow when you send it a little too far and explode into a sea of fluff, and the goat leather palm grip helps you hold onto your poles while you're whacking cornices or dueling with your buddy in the lift line.

Replacing 15 yr old Hestra Heli Mitten

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer
Size Bought:
9
Height:
5' 6"
Weight:
152

My Hestra Heli Mitten finally started to split at a seam after 15 years. Went for the Army Leather Gore-Tex Mitten while on sale. The new Mitten is warm just like the old one. I do use hand warmers and/or liners when the high temps are below 25F. My only minor complaint is I replaced a size 9 with a new size 9, but the new mitten seems slightly larger than the former. All in all, very happy with the purchase and hope they last as long as the last pair.

Hestra army leather gore-tex mitten

Familiarity:
I've used it several times
Size Bought:
9 (medium hands)

Unlike the "heli" by hestra this doesn't have a removable liner. As it goes, they seem extremely warm and I like the cuff. It's just right to go over my ski coat sleeve but no let execess snow or wind in. The grip is all good as well. I haven't gotten them wet inside yet so I can't speak to that, but Hestra has a long line of strong reviews and this is no different. My wife has the "heli" mitt and other than liner I can't really see a difference. You don't notice the goretex. If you ski a lot of colder snow conditions with frozen moisture, I'd actually recommend the Heli. If you are more west coast with wetter conditions, I think the gore-tex pays. IMHO. I'm please though, didn't like the price, but love the product.

Seems good but insulation can be more?

I have read lots of good things about these mitts so I purchased a pair. The materials and constructions seem solid and they have good looks and features but I am not convinced the level of insulation on the back of the hands will be sufficient for the coldest days in Utah or Northern CA that are 15F-20F before high windchill. They are significantly thinner compared to the Hestra Army Leather Extreme mittens. I would have gone for the Extreme but they don't have Gore-tex waterproof protection. The Gore-tex mittens are more similar to the Heli mittens in insulation thickness.

I was on a lift at Snowbird complaining my frozen fingers and the guy next to me suggested Hestra goretex. Where have you been all these years, Hestra? (likely, me skimping on price, but never again!). These babies are warm, very warm, even in 10F and wind. Too hot for skinning up, but I keep them in my backpack for the way down.
