You're not looking for the woolly mammoth of kayaks. Rather, you'd prefer a short kayak so you can zip around and sneak into small fishing spots. Grab the Heritage Kayaks RedFish 10 Kayak. This ten-foot sit-on-top kayak is easy to slip on the roof of your car, easy to hop in and out of, and a blast out on lakes, oceans, ponds, and rivers. The RedFish 10 has a stern tank well and an oval bow hatch so you can store snacks and a cooler. A cushiony back and butt seating system provides all-day comfort, while footbraces give you something to brace against while you're paddling.

Bottom Line: The Heritage Kayaks RedFish 10 Kayak isn't massive, hulking, or hairy.

Kate, most of the "sit on" open type kayaks will work. You will have to put some type of non-slick rug or something so he doesn't slide around.

Its all about balance and confidence... we have much narrower boats, and we stand and have paddle wars on the boats. so we dance around on top until we either get knocked in or jump in. I think with some practice, you could get it done with out getting wet.

Nicholas, most of the kayaks are not stable enough to stand up and fish.

Perfect for me and my dog

By:
August 22, 2011

I love my Redfish. I spent a lot of time researching one that fits both my dog and I comfortably. This was the best option for a smaller kayak. Max is a 70lbs Lab. The cockpit is 53" and I am 5'-4" so we both fit on there perfect. I've taken Max out three times. By the second time he figured out how to balance, gets in and out easily, and sits in there like a pro for hours. The kayak is very stable so the dog stays calm and I can easily balance it when he moves from one side to the other. See photo uploaded on here.

It tracks very nicely even with a dog shifting around in it. The seat and foot-braces are comfortable. This kayak is light enough for me to move around and lift over my 4-runner. Arizona has so many different spots to offer and I've gone to two gorgeous spots in the northern parts of AZ so far and loved every moment of it. Best of all I don't feel guilty about leaving my pooch behind. He gets to kayak too!

Ricky, old question but it is hard to know without actually sitting in it. Your legs might be a bit cramped because of your height.

The skeg is a triangular plate under the stern of the kayak that can be raised or lowered. They usually have controls near the cockpit to raise or lower it just like a rudder has. The skeg is used in cross currents and crosswinds to increase tracking and reduce the weathercocking effect.

Here is a really good article too that talks more about the positives of skegs and compares/contrasts them versus a rudder.

Love my Redfish

Here is a photo of my kayak. I specifically bought it because I wanted to take my dog out with me. The cockpit is 53" and my 70 lbs dog fits comfortably on it. It has a flatter base so it is not as rocky and Max stays calm on it. This picture is his 3rd time out, and now he rides like a pro.

This kayak would work but you might want to consider stepping up to the 12 footer. If I read your question correctly you cannot put 2 people in this style kayak.
