If you love being on the water, but you're not terribly fond of that if-I-move-I'm-going-to-tip-over feeling, grab the Heritage Kayaks FeatherLite 9.5 Recreational Kayak. The FeatherLite 9.5-foot Kayak's wide, stable design lets you pull out your camera and take pictures of wildlife without being afraid that lake water will soon be up your nose, in your mouth, and soaking your clothes. Heritage Kayaks added a cushioned, comfy seating system to this FeatherLite so your butt and back won't hate you by the end of the day. This recreational kayak's light weight makes it easy to load on the top of your car.
Bottom Line: Heritage Kayaks' FeatherLite 9.5 Recreational Kayak takes most of the, “oh sh**, I'm tipping ove–” out of your paddling days.
What is the weight on this? what are The construction materials? I assume it is a hard shell? I am mew to kyacking. Is this the safest, easiest to use?
I purchased this kayak as a gift for my girlfriend. I have a WS pamlico 100 and wanted something comparable for her first yak. While the boat is three pounds lighter than my pam and has a nice sleek appearance as well as stable presence on the water, there are some drawbacks that make the quality of the boat fall below the pam. First of all, the seat provided is not the seat pictured by the company website. The actual seat was much lower and generated some complaints that it was lacking in back support. Finding a replacement seat for this kayak (or any sit in kayak) is a challenge. In addition, there are no knee/thigh pads on the inside of the cockpit's edge, making it uncomfortable if you use your thighs to assist in powering the boat. To add these will set you back just under $30. Both of these little amenities will set you back an additional chunk of change but come standard with the pamlico, and wilderness systems has many more accessory options available, including replacement seats if yours is ever destroyed or you purchase a used yak. To end on a positive note, the featherlite looks sharp in the khaki color, not an option that WS provides :)
We really like taking the Featherlights to paddle the Cutler Marsh outside Logan Utah. The marsh is flat calm water, with a "maze". You need a stable boat that is easy to turn like the Featherlight 9.5. Here's the link to one of the best day paddlign trips north of SLC.... http://www.paddling.net/places/showReport.html?1560

Featherlights come with two seat options for 2010. The Featherlight Deluxe or DLX version is pictured here on the backcountry site, with the tan DVC seat. The Tan DVC seat is made of recycled plastic and formed into a matrix of light but strong polypropylene threads. The Threads are processed into a cushion matrix without using the heavy solvents and pollutants needed to make foam. DVC stands for Drains, Vents, Cushions because the recycled material creates a cushioned matrix of recycled threads that also ventilate your bum and backrest. The threaded cushion provides support, breathability, and drains water out away from your clothing and skin...keeping you drier than any other seat/outfitting available. The DVC seat has no foam or "glued nylon over foam. The Basic Featherlight has a traditional black nylon over foam seat and back band. The basic costs less, while the Deluxe costs more and is better for the environment.
I've never seen a dlx with the 9.5 and I've looked. The only difference is thigh pads and a different seat that has a little more back support. Enjoy yours trust me I love mine and I go everywhere.
This is the best yak for most conditions. Ether fishing or just exploring the waterways you will love this boat. Light weight and great tracking make the Feather Lite so much fun for adventures.
Rudders are needed more for longer boats to assist turning and to keep on course (track). Shorter boats like the Featherlight 9.5 don't need a rudder as they are easier to turn than longer boats. A boat that is easy to turn is also easy to correct and keep tracking.
Distance is important when choosing a kayak. IF you are a beginner looking at paddling 3 miles or less on small lakes, ponds, or small easy rivers, you wont need a rudder. If you are beginner looking at paddling more than 6 miles each session, look the 12 foot boats that come with Rudder options. At 14 feet, about 1/2 of all paddlers choose to get the rudder.
This is my first kayak. My biggest concern was if I would be paddling all day or doing the breast stroke. My question was answered the first time on the water; as stable as advertised. Of course, my novice technique leaves a lot to be desired, but I can keep it heading in the right direction without too much effort. I use it mainly for fishing and its maneuverability is a huge bonus. Nice little yak.
Boats 10 feet and under are better for smaller lakes, ponds, and moving water. They are easy to store and transport and generally are much lighter than big boats. If you paddling more than 3 miles go for the Featherlight 12. If you are paddling more than 8 to 12 miles, you might want a 14 footer for increased speed and tracking
A boats speed is propotional to its length. If you want a lightweight entry level stable boat for smaller lakes, ponds, slow rivers that is as easy to control as it is easy to load and unloand this is a great first boat!
If you want a kayak that's more than 9.5 feet, then yes, it's a problem. Look I'm a big guy and I use the 9.5 more than any other boat. They are great.
just bought one of these for my wife at Academy Sports in TX for $299.99 - she loves it - and based on the price you guys have listed - it was a good buy.
If you think about it the answer is right in front of you. Also try Bass Pro Shops. I found most everything you need is here @ backcountry.com... Enjoy your yak and get on the water
