Leave the foo-foo details at home.

The Helly Hansen Men’s Verglas Jacket lives for icy couloirs, deep powder days, and harsh mountain conditions. But hey, if it’s a sunny bluebird afternoon, this waterproof breathable 3-layer shell won’t judge. Mountain guides run into both on the regular, which is why they love the Verglas more than they love a client who tips well and buys the beers at the end of the day.

Made of burly and stretchy nylon that's decked out with a guaranteed waterproof and breathable Helly Tech Professional membrane, the Verglas is ultra-bomber without being unnecessarily complicated—you won't find any built-in GPS units or pocket espresso makers, just trim features like extra-long underarm vents, a zip-out powder skirt, and one-handed hood adjustment. It's built to be compatible with packs and harnesses so you don't have to sweat the details if you're on the skin track or rappelling into a filthy line, and also incorporates a DWR treatment to shed water if the precipitation isn't quite as cold as you'd like.

  • 3-layer Helly Tech Professional waterproof and breathable membrane
  • Super-rugged full-stretch nylon construction with DWR treatment
  • Extra-long underarm vents
  • Zip-out powderskirt
  • Helmet-compatible hood with one-hand adjustment
  • Adjustable cuffs and hem
  • Water-resistant front zipper

Fits Nice, Protects

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Height: 5' 11"
    Weight: 208 lbs

A true shell, this needs a couple layers underneath but it is roomy enough to handle them. When you Velcro the ample wrist sleeves it really warms up. The front air vents can double as a missing pocket, the only little wrinkle in the jacket.

The Verglas jacket has been my go-to jacket for guiding and personal climbing over the last two years. As a H.H. ambassador it is a piece I have struggled to provide critiques for. The materials and zippers are durable, and the cut is great for staying tucked into a harness, and fitting over a helmet. I have used this Jacket extensively for technical climbing and skiing in the Alaska Range, as well as on first ascents in the Himalaya. This December the jacket kept me dry on an early season ice trip in the Canadian Rockies, and over the next year I will have on with me for another round in the AK range, St. Elias, and Himalaya. Give it a try if you are looking for a truly durable waterproof layer for cold weather mountain adventures, you wont be disappointed!

Great Jacket for Any Conditions

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

This is an awesome waterproof shell for skiing in bounds and out. It will keep you dry in the wettest of weather. The pockets work well with a backpack and are big enough to hold goggles, gloves or anything else you may need. If you put the right layers underneath this shell, you'll be warm and dry on the coldest days.

Ski mountaineering go-to

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

When spring time rolls around this is my go-to jacket for ski mountaineering. It is waterproof, incredibly durable, light and fits well for dealing with rope and wearing a harness. As evidence you can see me rapping into a couloir in the picture while wearing this jacket. Everything you need and nothing you don't for a day of ski mountaineering.
