Sweet Baselayer!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I just spent two weeks skiing in the Italian Alps with this shirt and it did a job for me. This was a terrific baselayer that kept me warm and dry in most conditions I faced.

Even when I got sweaty during high-output skiing off-piste at Courmayeur I dried out very quickly. I never smelled bad or stayed damp coming off the hill at the end of the day. The seams never chafed, and the shirt still looks new after a couple washes.

Personally, I prefer this type of thinner base layer with a medium to high-loft mid-layer and shell. I don't like thicker base layers next to my skin. I am 5'7", 180, mostly muscle, and the medium fits me like a glove.

Note that I have the prior model with the huge HH logo on the chest. I like the looks better, but it does interfere a bit with breathability.

The stripe is right!

I have used the HH dry stripe crew top extensively during snowboard season, as well as into the early spring on early morning commutes and during cooler riding temps. The material is very lightweight and breathable, while still keeping you warm and dry thanks to the construction and Lifa blend, which draw s moisture from the body then wicks it to the next layer. On the mountain, the stripe crew keeps me warm and comfortable on the lift, then wicks away moisture to keep wind chill away on the ride down trail. On the road/trail, the crew top helps to quickly warm up as I start my ride, and keeps me well ventilated and cool once I start to work up a sweat and start to push out more heat, the striped sleeves are also a very helpful feature, as I can wear this piece by itself once the Salt Lake valley warms up and sheds its frigid morning temps and know that I am that much more visible thanks to the striped sleeve. I am very tall (6'6) and about 220 and the XL size works very well for me, it is a slimmer cut for a closer to skin fit. I have had this piece for over a year and it is still working excellently as both a first chair charging high performance ski/snowboard base layer and as a visible and versatile first layer I utilize while spinning wheels in the city and I would very highly recommend it for someone seeking a high performance base layer that has the ability to be used during a variety of conditions and sports.

The Classic!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

This is the base layer I remember seeing on all my skiing heroes growing up, so naturally I associated it with being awesome. I figure, if you're wearing the striped Lifa top, you're gonna kick butt, right?

I guess it doesn't magically bestow victory but it's nonetheless a staple of my apparel drawer. The Lifa fabric does a great job of keeping me warm even when I'm sweating, and as such I am comfortable wearing it three seasons of the year across running, xc skiing, biking, and more.

If there's something I would improve, it's that the Lifa material tends to hold smell pretty firmly. That being said, I just make sure to wash the top each time I wear it, not letting it sit around and fester very long, and that keeps the stank to a minimum.

Fantastic shirt!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Keeps you warm and keeps you dry just like it says. It is clutch for the slopes. Rock it under a softshell and you've got all you need for most days. Great buy.

The helly Hansen layering gear is the best that i've ever owned and specifically the top for the different activities i use it for. The pic os from the flash dash 5k on 10/6/13 that i just happened to win. no big deal.....

1. This top is lightweight, that is probably my favorite part about it. I don't ever feel uncomfortable with it on.

2. The moisture wicking is insane. It's is running like i do alot with this on or hiking to the peak to drop some fun lines i can sweat and then cool off and not be freezing. It will still keep warm even after i have drenched it with sweat then it will dry itself off.

3. No matter what the temps are it will even keep me cool when it's a little warmer out than need. The longsleeves are perfect for me. The materials feels smooth and is hard to argue you can find another layering piece with be much better. I love the dry stripe top and will continue to use it probably 90 of the days i snowboard, run, and oh yeah i forgot to mention i wear this under my hockey gear while out on the rink playing. Perfect under the gear and doesn't smell too bad even after i've played in it.

Warm layer, but easy to melt

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small

I love the HH lifa layers for their simple but attractive warm design and tight fit. For a single layer that can breathe normally my first choice, though longer trips often require wool that doesnt hold odor so bad.
For some reason- probably the hole spacing- these melt much easier than other synthetics, so if someone else borrows one or does your laundry be careful.
If I can find a flannel print one in the US everything will be perfect.

does the job well

This top is great. It is warm, breathable, comfy and fits well. Just remember, with HH go a size up.

This thermal kept me warm and dry on the slopes. Absolutely no complaints here. This one is a great buy especially on sale.

Best top hands down

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have plenty of different brand base layers and thermal shirts. Time after time, I'll sift through the laundry to find this one. I've had it now for about 4 years, and its still good as new. I finally ordered a few more tops this year for the upcoming winter. Fit is great, athletic style, close to the skin. I use it for winter bike riding (in Michigan, not some semi "cool" southern state) and it really does great at keeping you dry and warm.

Good fit, but material a little THIN

Good body hugging fit, but the material is a bit THIN... I can see my chest hair underneath. Maybe it's only the WHITE color that have this problem??

The Perfect Base Layer

I'm embarrassed to admit how many different brands of base layers I've spent my hard earned money on. TOO MANY. My favorite by a long shot is HH. It's the perfect base layer. Helly Hansen is all about quality for sure and this is warm and wicks away moisture as well the rest but what I appreciate most, is the fit and finish. It's got a trim, athletic cut and the material has a smooth, slippery quality to it so it fit's really well under anything (including fleece) and isn't that what your base layer is supposed to do. I've retired all my other base layers to the work shed and now I only wrap myself in HH.

Dry Stripe Crew does the job!

This was a great purchase. The material makes the top lightweight but keeps you dry. This fits nicely against the skin and holds up on hot days as well as keeps you warm on cold days. Great purchase!

Classic lines never go out of style

Nice material and extra light and airy. Has been tested in the humid environment of Australia. Will soon be tested for Everest basecamp.

Classic Stripes

This is probably the best baselayer I have ever owned. Leave it to the first of the base layer pioneers to be the best. The lifa fabric is light but durable and keeps you dry in almost any conditions, especially cold. This shirt is my top of the list for any strenuous winter and fall activities for it's comfort, wicking and thermal properties. Not to mention the stripes are BA.
