Vent your steam so you can keep surging on.

Helly Hansen has been perfecting baselayer technology for the last forty years and testing it in the harshest conditions, which means that the company has gotten very good at pushing the limits of fabric technology. The Lifa Stay Dry fabric in the Men's Dry Charger 1/2-Zip Top wicks moisture at a very fast rate to help regulate body temperature and keep you drier, thus avoiding the sweat/freeze combo. The front zipper allows you to manage airflow, zipping down and letting more air in as you heat up or zipping up when the chills creep in. All-around flatlock stitching lies comfortably against your skin so you can avoid the chafing that can accompany a lengthy stay in the mountains.

The Zip is KEY

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Height: 6' 1"
    Weight: 165 lbs
    Size Purchased: large

Ok, this is my favorite thermal because of the zip. This allows you to vent and adjust hugely when wearing this. In backcountry skiing and normal skiing, you get hot, you get cold you get just right.

When I'm cold or a wind comes up, I can zip it up high and it makes a little turtleneck and keeps me warm. When I'm hot, I zip it all the way down and can lose a lot of heat via my neck and chest quickly.

Mainly, I love this when hiking. Whether I'm hiking up with something over this top or just wearing this top, I can adjust and stay comfy and happy.

When skiing and wearing full gear, I can still adjust according to temps. I have quite a few tops and whenever I can (ie whenever this thing isn't really stinky) I wear this top.

This top breathes well, is warm, and is comfortable.

This is my go to thermal top for skiing, backcountry skiing, and ski mountaineering.

Another great layer for Fall

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I often alternate between this top and the Pace Lifa Flow depending on the weather; they both do a great job of maintaining warmth while keeping that dreaded moisture away from your body so you can stay warm and not risk rapid cooling (freezing) when you de-layer. Either one is a solid buy; both is even better!
