Provides quality and performance without draining your bank account.

The Hardy Ultralite DD Fly Reel literally stops you in your tracks, thanks to its oh-so-sexy contours, stunning design, and great value. Besides looking damn fine, the Ultralite DD possesses a wide-ranging advanced fiber composite drag system that satisfies any freshie and most salty angler's requirements (no pun intended). This large arbour reel has little drag time in the upstart of the reel, a smooth feel, and an agreeable 'clicking' sound when you reel your line in or when a fish takes your fly for a run.

As good as it gets

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Words cannot explain how well this rod works. I've been putting it to work in sub zero conditions and it's been performing wonderfully! Was a little dubious about the non sealed drag but to be honest, it out performs my lamsons and sage reels easily. Easy to control drag, pleasant sounding reel, holds good amount of backing, and by far the most attractive reel on the market. It is ultralight weight and LARGE LARGE arbor. It's well constructed and doesn't scuff easily. It's been dropped on lots of basalt and hasn't even shown any wear so far. It stacks line super well (unlike many of its competitors) and it has lightning fast retrievals. This is the BEST reel you can get for the money. No question about it. It doesn't freeze over solid when wet with a little moisture and it is definitely very photogenic when it comes to posting your fishpics on IG. If you don't have this reel already, just buy it. It's worth the money and you will never want to fish your other reels. I even prefer this reel to the much more expensive LOOP Opti-Runner. You would usually pay MUCH more for a reel of this quality.

PS- it will stop anything dead in its tracks, including Carp

Keep it reel

So far so good

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I was in need a good reel for salmon up here in AK. So I purchased the Hardy DD 8000 with two spools to have sinking and floating line setups for fishing a variety of situations. On the first day Itook out the sinking line trying to fish deep out in the surf for salmon before they were entering the stream. I was about to catch sever pinks (Humpy) and a silver (Coho). The reel was really smooth and allowed me to fight the various fighting styles of the fish in the surf. I was highly impressed with the way the DD responded to the runs by the silver. I was pretty pumped by this since I bought the reel to catch the larger species of salmon especially the acrobatic silvers.
The casting of the reel was nice and it was able to feed me line when went to pull. With the stiffness of an 8 weight rod the reel acted like a counterweight which gave me nice balance. Throughout my casting I did not notice any slippage on either end of my cast (which has to be fairly aggressive with the wind we experience out in the Aleutians).
I have yet to try the other spool which will most likely happen pretty soon.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have two disk drag reels and 3 spare spools. I have one reel for fresh and the other for salt life. I also have the 10' Demon rod. I like to fish for good sized fish on lighter equipment. Since I catch and release, it is their fight I want. These reels are smooth and high functioning machines.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've got the 5000 for my 5 weight Hardy Zenith. They're a match made in heaven. I've also used the 5000 on my 6wt and it balances well. I love the thin profile large arbor design. picks up your line super quick. There is a really pleasant click on both the retrieve and when line is stripping out. I have a strong Hardy bias when it comes to my rods and reels, and it might just be me but you are going to struggle to find a better value & a better looking reel anywhere else. $225 for this reel. To get this quality and precision from Orvis, Sage, Ross, Lamson, etc you will be paying more than double, no doubt.

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I bought this reel for my dad but had to take it out before I wrapped it up. The machining is impeccable and the finish is superb. Big thanks to Stephan for helping me pair it to my dad's rods.

Performs as good as it looks.

This is one of the best made reels that I have seen. Beautifully machined, amazing craftsmanship and attention to detail. You can really tell when you pick it up and feel how light it is. I've seen reels that are very lightweight but you feel like you could snap them in half, not the case with this. It is super sturdy and everything just feels solid. The drag system is so smooth and doesn't hang up at all. One reason I decided on this reel was the large arbor. Its the biggest one in this size. I got the 4000 and it balances my 9' 5wt. perfectly. This is the nicest reel that I've seen hands down.

    Lightweight, smooth and sexy

I have had reels in the past claiming they were lightweight, but where this reel differs is not only is it Ultralight as it claims but the craftsmanship is perfect. Some of the reels that were claiming lightweight felt week and not as well put together, almost loose and fragile and lacking a good drag system. This reel is not only appealing to the eyes but to your feel of it as well, super super lightweight but so sturdy and strong. It can easily be switched from LHR to RHR, I love the large arbor as well it really picks up the line quickly and so smooth. And as for Hardys' drag system, where other lightweight reels fall short the DD drag system steps it up, controlled and smooth without sticking points or blowouts. If your are looking for a lightweight reel look no further this is a perfect reel for your rod.

Thinking of purchasing a Hardy DD Ultralite...

Thinking of purchasing a Hardy DD Ultralite reel for a new 9 ft 6wt Zenith. Would the 5000 balance OK?

Just purchased Hardy 9ft 6WT zenith rod...

Just purchased Hardy 9ft 6WT zenith rod from you folks. Could you recommend best Hardy DD ultralite Reel to balance. Considering 5000 - sound OK?

      Best Answer

      Hey Mark,

The DD 5000 should balance pretty well. Some people are a little more picky on balance, but I've found that a 5 or 6wt rod will balance well with a reel that's about 5oz.

That will be a really nice setup paired up with your Zenith.

      Tight lines!
