There’s a lot of doubling-up going on in the GSI Outdoors Bugaboo Backpacker, and by that we mean a welded sink which doubles as a stuff sack and a strainer integrated into a lid that fits both pot and fry pan. The aluminum pot and pan use two layers of nonstick coating for easy gourmet cooking and the polypropylene bowls, insulated mugs, and sip-it tops keep weight down and nest for packing. A folding gripper locks on the pot and fry pan’s exterior brackets for scratch-proof, secure handling.
Have used this set twice now on week long trips. Handle locks in nice and solid, but pops off without trouble when needed. I love how everything nests together into the pot with lots of room leftover my Snow Peak stove and some food items. The mugs kept drinks hot for over an hour at 25 degree air temps during a Thanksgiving trip to Guadalupe Mountains. This is now my go to set when headed out, be it car camping or backpacking (to me the convenience is worth the weight).
I've used this one a couple times, so I can't say long term how it is, but I liked it for 2 people or more. It's not the best if you are cooking just for yourself, then it's a bit excessive. I found that out the hard way when I ended up cooking separate food for myself, while other people in my party did their own thing. However, you can take out half of the cups and store the fuel there instead, if that's the case. The insulated cups are really nice to have when you need a warm drink. I really like the strainer for pasta and such and the handle is easy to remove and put on. Also, I have a MSR Pocket Rocket and the pot remained steady while I cooked.
I originally purchased the bugaboo, but after just a few uses decided to return it for the Pinnacle. I'm planning on this cookware lasting me a long time and I quickly realized I wanted the better coating (I scratched the bugabook a little too easily).
The 20 extra bucks is paying for quality. The short answer is the Pinnacle has better scratch resistantance, even allowing the use of some metal utensils and has better heat technology. The pan heats more evenly avoiding a burger patty with one spot cooked more than the other.
The longer answer is the Bugaboo is made out of aluminum and polypropylene with 2 layers of coating to protect from scratching and abrasion (which I have heard from some, this can be a problem with this set). The Pinnacle is hard anodized aluminum that uses Tephlon with radiance technology to allow better heat dispersion. It also has three layers of coating to protect better against scratching and abrasion. More details can be found on GIS outdoors' website: http://www.gsioutdoors.com

4 star rating for a solid set. If you are carrying gear for multiple people and/or cooking more gourmet (pizza, etc.) than the backpacker set is tough to beat (I like the Ketalist or Soloist for small groups or for simple water boiling).
The durability/better heat distribution of the coating that comes with the Pinnacle backpacking set is superior, though, and worth the price. I'd recommend that one first.
I'd agree with BAinUT, pack a small stove and cook on that. I'd use only stainless steel on an open fire. Cook with this over a fire and you run the risk of ruining it. The temp on an fire is too hard to regulate.
I'm going to disagree with Angus. Generally, and depending on material, coated non-stick pots/pans are for stove top use only due to the lack of heat control over a wood camp fire. The Teflon coating GSI uses for this product begins to degrade with temperatures above 500F/260C. Food/water will obviously absorb much of the heat generated by a wood fire (as it does with a stove), but not the sides of the pot. Also, wood fires can heat faster and generate more heat than the food can absorb, which would cause scorchting first then degradation quickly following.
I was looking for a set that was durable, light, and non-stick. I admit I'm not an ultra-light backpacker. I would have liked this to be a bit smaller, however, other smaller sets I looked at were either too small or did not offer the other benefits I was looking for. After using it on several trips I love this set. I'm able to pack my Brunton Vesta stove, a fuel can, a washcloth, the folding handle, and some cleaning pads all inside and stowed away.
Great cookset. Heated evenly and cleaned up nicely. Nice assortment of accessories and by stacking the mugs inside the bowls, there's plenty of space for utensils, spices, soap, etc., to keep all the cookery in one place. It may be a bit heavy, but I'm not that picky it can be pieced out if soloing. A previous comment was right about the fry pan being off balance before food's put in it - a little annoying. Biggest drawback was the difficulty I had getting the handle attached/detached. Not a deal-breaker, but slightly irritating. Overall 8/10. Very pleased.
I had an original one that I ended up returning that had the handle stick a bit when attaching/detaching it. I returned it and the replacement slid on and off easily.
I looked closely at the pot, though, and if I hadn't returned it, I'm sure I could have taken some needle nose pliers and gently pried out the piece that allows the handle to slide on. If done just a bit at a time, it would allow you to move it out enough that the handle slides on without force, but isn't too loose.
I love this little cooksets versatility. I've used it pretty heavily for over a year now, weeks canoeing in the BWCA, weeks in the Porkies and numerous nights around a rowdy campfire and it has preformed tremendously. I bought it on sale at REI and didn't expect to get much use from it, but I sure am!
Pros: -nonstick coating makes cleanup a BREEZE -mugs stay warm, keep fingers from burning -nests beautifully -space in the nest for cutlery, spices & soap -heat distribuition rocks -strainer actually works!!!! -GSI large spoon works as pot scraper
Cons: -pot grabber was hard to switch while cooking -lids for mugs don't have big enough holes
Really this thing is great. I use it all the time. I'm going to get a couple more mugs & bowls & another pot though, as you need more if your bring more than a partner.
Great cook set. Used it for the first time last weekend in the NM Pecos Wilderness backcountry. This set is heavier and bulkier than some others, which can be an issue with backpacking. However, the functionality outshined the added weight/volume for me. I used the skillet as my plate for most meals, which worked great. The removable handle for the skillet and pot caused the skillet to be tipsy on my MSR stove until I got more weight into the skillet. This creates yet another opportunity to dump your meal onto the ground, so take care. Keep in mind also that the Teflon coating means you can't use metal silverware or highly abrasive cleaning pads. Highly satisfied.
