The Grivel Spring Leash lets you take advantage of leashless tools without the risk of dropping one off a steep ice route or half way up an alpine climb. Available as a single leash for mountaineering or a double for the steep stuff, this leash contracts to keep from tangling an extends to your full reach. Just girth hitch this leach to your belay loop, clip the carabiners to the hold in your tool's handle, and get after it.
Bottom Line: Leashes for leashless tools.

Why would I want a biner clipped to my ice axe rattling around as I climb and making it harder to hold onto? I would think it would be better to reverse this and clip the biner to your harness.

Yes you can...but it be better to clip the biner to your ice axe for if it you get of the cliff it hold better

Could anybody comment on the durability of this? I am particularly concerned about for how long this will retain the "spring", before degrading to just a static leash.

I used the double spring option of this leash this last winter in Ooray, CO at the ice climbing park they have. I spent three days with it there and two days with it elsewhere and the elasticity never wavered. I wish I had a more "long-term" experiment with it but it worked fantastically and I have no complaints plus it matches my ice ax. Cheers!
