With a fold-out hook to pull cord through a V-Thread (Abalakov) anchor, the Grivel Candela is an important piece of gear for getting off ice climbs. It even has a retractable blade to cut sling material when your anchor is complete. It is also made of soft plastic so you can use it to clean ice out of a screw without scratching the inside.

Bottom Line: Clip it to your harness any time you're on the ice.

I've used this gadget for 2 seasons and love it. I keep it inside my bail-kit's 22cm abalakov screw nice and protected for when i need it. It functions to clear stubborn ice from a screw your second forgot to clear. It functions as a v-thread tool to snag the cord and clear the ice holes; the hook also stays hidden so it doesn't stab you. It also has a readily accessible knife for cutting cord or webbing. The Candella is quite a versatile all-in-one tool.

Weak tool

I wasn't too impressed with the durability of this tool. After a few outings this tool sure enough folded up in half and was useless. If you keep it protected in a pack all the time it will last maybe but don't plan on carrying this on your harness.
