Great Pack

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have the original version of the Gregory Z pack and needed a larger version. The Z 75 fit the bill. It has plenty of room for a 4 day mountaineering trip. It carried everything that I needed quite comfortably. The only thing that I would fix is the exterior side pockets. They are too small to carry anything significant. I usually like to keep Nalgene water bottles in the exterior side pockets of my pack and the Z 75 pockets would not support this plan. I was able to make up for this by using the hydration bladder setup and putting my Nalgene bottles inside the pack.

Z Ventilated Backpacking

These packs provide True Ventilation across your back without sacrificing the positive load transfer of weight to your hips. The two critical points that make the suspension work, at the scapula pads and lower lumbar pad, are the only points of contact with your back. The proprietary waistbelt system is adjustable to 3 different sizes and ensures a custom fit and comfortable carry out on the trail.

Wonder twin powers activate - make it a z55

I just spent a couple hours with this pack and it may be their best pack design yet.
    Things I noticed:

    1. The thicker belt and shoulder straps are great and should be on all of the z’packs.
    2. The bigger front pocket with half moon zipper is great! This also should be on all of the z’packs. The vertical zippered pockets on all the other models just do not work as well.
    3. I have owned a lot of packs that have “front access” and this pack (finally) does it right. If you look close at the picture you notice that the whole front can be opened with only two buckles to unclip. It’s really easier and quicker to open the front than open the top.

Only one bad thing to say about this pack- it’s too big. If this was a 55L pack, I would love to own one. If they take the new belts, shoulder straps, front half moon pocket, and front access and patch it on the z55. That will be one great pack.

Is it water-proof, OR does it include a water-proof cover?

    Best Answer

    Hey Tim,

It's neither water-proof, nor does it have a built-in rain cover.

Very few packs themselves are water-proof (until you're getting very specialized and into the $500-600 price range), and built-in rain covers are mostly found in some of the newer, good quality day packs. A good roll-top dry bag used as pack liner or an aftermarket rain cover are the way to go.

    Hope this helps.

Is it possible to order a Z75 with different torso and hip belt sizes? If so, how would I do that? I have a 17.5" torso and a 31" waist. According to the sizing chart here and on the Gregory website, those put me in a small torso and a medium hip belt.
