Gregory Z 35-R Backpack - 1890-2380cu in - 2008 BCS

I have had this pack for about 8 months now and it is great. The first 3 months of owning it I was doing conservation work in Flagstaff, AZ. I put the pack through hell. Because I was a sawer the pack was always holding 3L of water, all of my saw accessories, work tools, lunch, and a first aid kit. It was probably about 35lbs in it at all times if not a little more. Anyways it made it with only one rip from one of the teeth on my saw, hardly a defect. All in all, I Highly recommend this fast and light day pack.

Using the Z35-R, I have had no trouble packing gear for a 2-night summer trip . In regards to its volume it seems larger than stated. For me, this pack carries very well when the total weight is kept at 30lbs or below. (The pack accomplishes weight transfer to the hips better than my Osprey Atmos.) The roll top is a simple design that allows faster (and with less frustration) main pack access than a pack with a top pocket. The top straps (across the roll top) have just enough strap to allow me to carry my solo tent there... barely. The bottom strap lenghts are adequate for just about anything a hiker would normally carry.
Curiously, the inside water reservoir sleeve is minus a hanging strap. Hopefully this oversight was cured on the 2009 model? Unlike my Osprey Atmos, there is no way to place the reservoir directly behind the mesh (that contact's your back). There would be room for a 2L reservoir there.. if you get it there (thus, alowing more usuable space inside the body of the pack).
My torso lenght is 19 to 19.5 inches and the medium fits very well, despite the fact that my waist is 35 inches. (I did try the large and found that is was clearly too big.) Happy Trails!

The suspension on this pack is super comfertable, and the arched back keeps your back from overheating. The design of this pack is what sets it appart. The roll top allows me to access the main compartment in a flash, and saves some weight too. The large zippered pocket on the front comes in handy for items you need often. Then there is the bucket pocket, my favorite part about this pack. This thing is awesome...I keep my camp shoes and rain gear in it, but it is perfect for any large bulky item, anything you need access to quickly, or wet or really dirty items you don't want in the pack. The pack is small and fits tight to the body... making it perfect for scrambling, and bushwacking. I don't know how much weight can be carried comfertably, but I usually keep mine around 25 and it feels great.

Great pack for day hikes or even an overnighter. Extremely light and comfortable on your back and a lot more durable than the pictures would suggest (pictures make the material look very thin but it's actually quite strong). The roll top is great and compression straps all around help stabilize the load. The outside pocket is perfect too for stowing a sweatshirt or jacket as you start to overheat from a strenuous climb. Very pleased with the quality of construction. Picked up a size medium off SAC for an unbeatable price.

Great pack. It is a bit heavy for it's size, by no means an "ultralight" (my 75L pack weighs 47oz.) but certainly does the job well at carrying a full load. Used it on early season overnight trips and was able to carry all the gear, plus carry the sleeping pad and tent via the external straps. Wasn't sure I'd like the roll-top, but now wouldn't go back to zippers as the roll-top is lighter (slightly), quick to access, more convenient, more leak resistant, and functionally near fail-proof.

I got my pack today and it holds everything i would need for a day hike and more. It would also work well for a single night camping trip.

The roll up top makes loading much much easier than a conventional closing top. The 35L space is an understatement- or so it seems. The harness is a god send. At right at 3lbs this is the best bet to kick off your ultra light pursuits.

I've had this pack for over a year now, and I have loved it! I have taken it on trips to Guatemala, Costa Rica, Hawaii, Belize, Puerto Rico, and numerous camping/hiking trips from Southern Utah to Wyoming. It has held up very well, and I like how light it is while at the same time it is able to carry all my essentials. I recommend this pack.
