Thanks to a lightweight suspension system, the Gregory Z30 Backpack keeps your gear comfortable on your back, so you can handle your day-hike or morning summit trip without feeling like you have a 50 pound safe strapped to your back. The Z30 daypack's framesheet supports your heavy loads, and a mesh back panel promotes airflow across your back as you heat up on the trail. A front zippered pocket and side mesh pockets hold maps, sunscreen, and snacks, and this Gregory backpack's front dump pocket keeps your rainjacket accessible. Stay hydrated with your water reservoir in the Z30 Backpack's hydration sleeve. Choose the medium pack when you need a little more space for your all-day adventures.
Bottom Line: The Gregory Z30—because your daypack should handle weight just as comfortably as your weeklong pack.
It is very comfortable. The quality is clearly top of the line. I highly recommended it. I used mine for the first time, loaded with everything for a five mile hike for my son and I. It did not bother me at all. It has all kinds of adjustment so you can fit it just right on the move. By the way Backcountry.com has the best customer service of any online company including Amazon that I have ever dealt with. Use the live chat, you will be surprised how helpful they are. Anything you buy can be easily and QUICKLY refunded. I buy it, try it in the field and if it doesn't meet my expectations they take it back without any hassles, no questions. They make it really easy right from the website, print a UPS label and as soon as UPS scans it they start the refund. WOW! Much better than the BS that Amazon puts you through no second party hassle.

This has been my go to pack for day hikes and such for a while. Construction seems sturdy to me if you take proper care of it. The middle is narrow though, so when you take things from the bottom you really have to move things out of the way. Also the hip belts are pretty bulky when not in use, but I just clip them to each other around the back of the pack so that they stay out of the way. Otherwise no problems at all. I like that it has multiple compression straps, and the back suspension is super comfortable. Recommended
Pretty cool daypack. I got a large size (my torso is about 20.5 inches) and it fits pretty good. The frame is quite sturdy and I wouldn't hesitate to carry upwards of 30 pounds in the pack. I got with the idea that maybe I could use it for some quick overnights but the size is just a touch small for that. I would also prefer it to have some straps on the bottom for more attachment options. On the plus side, it ventilates well, rides well, and the hipbelt is quite comfy. I would get the 35 liter version is you're thinking about using it for some overnight trips though.
18-20" as measured from the base of your neck to the top of your hip. Gregory Doesn't specify waist sizes. However, a competitors website suggests the belt will fit waist sizes 28-34" http://www.gregorypacks.com/products/mens/technical/27/z30 Hope that helps!
After borrowing an older Gregory Iris pack to head up Mt. Whitney and finding it to be very comfortable, I opted to purchase my own Gregory pack. This pack needed no break-in period. Wore it right away on a 14 mile hike, then a 20-mile hike - no sore shoulders, no rubbing, no problems at all. Carried 5 liters of water to start on one hike and once the pack was on, I could barely feel the weight. The back stays reasonably well ventilated, and the various pockets and pouches are all useful, particularly the ones on the hip belt. 32 oz Nalgene bottles fit fine in the side water bottle pockets and can easily be removed and replaced without taking off the pack. For years I've preferred to wear lumbar packs rather than a full day pack on shorter hikes, but this pack is comfortable enough that I am opting to use it on more of my hikes.
I've used this pack for just about every trip I've gone on for the last 2+ years (probably 40-50 trips). It has held up perfectly and I have absolutely no complaints. I use it for day hikes, snow skiing, weekend road trips, and as my carry-on bag whenever I fly (I can usually fit everything I need for 2-3 days in this pack and I don't have to check a second bag). I've stuffed it too the max on multiple occasions and the zippers always hold. It's light, provides great ventilation, and has never let me down.
Depends on how you like that pack to sit on you. I prefer a lower sitting pack, so I would get the large, but if you like the traditional higher up fit, you could definitely get the medium.
I bought this backpack specifically for snowshoeing and hiking. It's very light, comfortable and durable. It has lots of pockets and places to attach things like whistles, carabiners and snowshoes. One of my favorite features are the two mesh zippered pockets on the belt, so I can easily access a snack without taking off the pack.
This pack is very comfortable for dayhikes. It allows plenty of air circulation so your back isn't soaked when you take it off. It has plenty of room for a days needs.
As a trail maintainer I carry a chainsaw ,extra saw chain gas ,oil, 3 liter camelback first-aid kit, food raingear, etc. Most daypacks, even the large size are to short on me. Does the large fit long torso people as I am 5'10" ? Will the material holdup to the wear and tear I would put it through?I carry the saw balanced on the top of the pack and hold the saw bar. If this one won't holdup do you have any suggestions?
Robert, First - do you think this pack will have room for all of your gear? If so, then yes. I am 6' and have been happy with Gregory, Arcteryx and black diamond for their long torso size packs. You should be fine with this one.
I bought this pack before going to Italy for two months; I used it every day to walk the 2.5 miles home from work as well as on weekend excursions. Even loaded down with a laptop or two (and accessories), textbook, and various other things it was quite comfortable. I also took it on a 25 mile day hike with more traditional equipment in it...it was great for that too. It has stood up to abuse well, and the back panel does help to keep your back cooler, if not dry. Put this on last weekend for a hike and realized I actually missed wearing it. Gregory makes some great equipment and this pack is no exception
I was looking for a lighter pack that could hold my gear for a day and that is what i got. I have been using a Dakine for years but it is really for winter use and heavy. I love the ventilation feature and the exterior pockets for storage of smaller things. It really rides nice on my back.
I am also looking for a daypack for Kili - i like this one because it doesn't have too many straps and buckles and other gadgets - were you able to hang your walking poles on it? Am I being too minimalist in preferring this one for Kili because of its simplicity?
I used the Z30 everyday for 2 months while in Uganda, in Puerto Rico, and on numerous camping, hiking, and day excursions. It is light, comfortable, and though it looks small, really packs a lot in! the hip pockets are great and the ventilation system works wonderfully! I also really like the clips in the side water bottle pockets, i can clip in my Nalgene with out having to carabiner it in or worry about it popping out while on my bike or on the trail. The only 2 negatives is that the waist belt isnt very snug on me, i got the medium and i am 5'10 153 lbs, probably should have gone with a small. and the main zipper is kinda small and if you need something at the bottom, gotta take everything out. but i LOVE this pack and it goes everywhere with me; from the bush in Africa, to the rainforest, to on campus. i would highly recommend this pack!
Just received the Z30 and right out of the box you can tell that the quality is below par. The stiching as well as the craftsmanship is lousy. The zippers are small and not nearly the quality you would find on a Osprey Back Pack. Would of loved to trade the Z30 in for a Stratos 30-lrg-grey or a Manta 30 lrg black or even a Atmos-lrg-blue but BackCountry has been out of these and other back packs for almost two months now! Somebody in their ordering dept. needs to get it together. Hello 02 Gear Shop!!!!!!!!!!-Fully stocked and ready to go!!
1)Call Gregory and see what they can do for you. They may have you send it in and replace the zipper for a nominal fee. I've had great experiences with their costumer service in the past.2)Take it in to a local gear shop. Ask if they have a seamstress (or know of one) that will do custom jobs.3)Buy a new pack! Buying new stuff is always fun!
I guess three stars means it's adequate for the job, but I wouldn't buy it again. I got a medium pack and I find it's too long for my torso (I'm 5'7"). Pockets on the hipbelt are very useful but I find they stick out a bit because they're right at the front by the buckle and I would prefer they were closer to my hips. Also, I find it's hard to get things out of the bottom of the pack because the zipper is small and the pack is kind of narrow in the middle, so you have to take everything out.
But, it is comfortable (other than bumping my head when biking) and the air flow on the back can't be beaten. I wore it all summer hiking in Africa and it's still in good shape. The light grey colour is really light and gets dirty very easily.
Great loading geometry. My hips never chafe, and the back ventilates reasonably well. Enough padding all-around to be comfy, but not excessive. The Gregory pear shape of the pack really helps in terms of settling heavy loads on the back for long hikes. I've even climbed easy trad with it a couple times. As a lanky, oddly built dude I recommend it highly for its comfort, adjustability and durability.
What's with the sizing of this pack? Only S and M are offered... Do these refer to back length, as w/ most packs, or just to pack volume? (If the former, I'd assume a size L would be offered as well...)
I bought this pack in women's medium for my 12 year old daughter to use in wilderness survival training. She loved the fit and weight, but yesterday she carried it on a rigourous ascent and descent of Horsetail Falls in the Sierra near Tahoe and the bottom of the pack totally blew out from being scraped on the granite during the rock crawling. This was only the second time she carried and it is destroyed. The material on the bottom of the pack is thin and not durable in the least. This pack might be good for travel or easy day hikes, but don't expect it to hold up to tough conditions. I'm sure it would shred in the brush or thick trees as well. Not made for durability.
that because you daughter needs to learn how to take care of her things. if you want this light of a pack, you need thin material. 5 stars. my top day hike pack
It is very comfortable. The quality is clearly top of the line. I highly recommended it. I used mine for the first time, loaded with everything for a more...
