WXS is really Women's Extra Small! Yay!

  • Gender: Female

I am a very small (under 5'; >100lbs) woman who is in the mountains quite a bit (~90 days/year). I've been using an older model Gregory Jade 50. It fits well but has numerous feature problems (aside from being too large for a winter day pack). I've needed a 35-40 liter pack that could carry a JetBoil, emergency bivy, summit coat, ice axe, shovel, extra gloves/layers, and 10 Essentials - plus corrects the older Jade's feature issues.

The newer Jade model fixes some critical features but utilizes a different waist belt, which adjusted at WXS, is still too big. Over the past several months, I've spent hours at the local outdoor retailers trying over a dozen kids' and women's models: no success. I've emailed with pack-makers and pack retailers: no success. I have purchased several packs online only to return them b/c the fits were too large. The last pack I purchased here caused serious back pain for two weeks - after only one 6-hour hike! (Thank you, Backcountry.com, for your return policy.)

This WXS pack (41 liters) actually fits AND has many great features! I love the exterior water bladder holder and built-in rain cover. There's a discrete daisy chain for hooking carabiners (no good place on the Jade). The waistbelt pockets are big enough to be useful. The sturdy velcro/rubber tool attachment straps minimize ice axe flopping (unlike the wimpy elastic bands on many packs). The back is amply padded for comfort and S-curved for ventilation. There's great tailbone padding, another area that causes fit troubles for me. The padded shoulder straps are thin enough and spaced so that they don't dig into my neck. Pack interior is accessible from top AND front. There's a discrete zippered compartment on one side perfect for stashing toilet paper and unused blue bags. My only wish is that the pockets were made with stretch fabric instead of loose mesh. But super minor complaint compared to all the ways this pack is wonderful! LOVE!
