Long Haul Duffel Bag

Take the Gregory Long Haul Duffel Bag with you on your Alaskan deep-sea fishing trip. The Shelter-Rite fabric provides absolute waterproofness, high tear resistance, and it can stand up to just about anything you throw at it (or throw it at, if using your bag as a defense weapon). So when a storm floods the boat deck or a fishing hook attacks your bag, your stuff stays safe. Carry it using the main handles or the end haul handles, and keep the small stuff organized in the two zippered end pockets.

Bottom Line: A tough bag to protect your stuff through extreme conditions.

Talk shop with all the gear freaks out there: ask 'em questions, upload/browse photos, and give your 2¢.

33lbs of what? Down sleeping bags? camlocks and Rope? What you are packing will determine what size you should get... if its bulky stuff, go bigger... Once you figure out what you are packing then do a rough estimate of the size you will need (LxWxH)...

Great bang for the buck

I own 7 TNF Base Camp Duffels (including an XL) but I wanted an even larger duffel to store away some of my gear. This XXL is CAVERNOUS. I own 6 backpacks (including two Osprey Argons), and I can fit all six of them (empty) into this duffel and zip it closed. It doesn't have the bells and whistles such as cordura bottom reinforcements or shoulder straps, but for pure volume, it's great. It seems pretty durable, but I don't abuse this bag -- it's for high volume transport and storage. For expedition and airport abuse, I use one of my many TNF Base Camp duffels.

I wouldn't take this on a plane because it DEFINITELY will be considered oversized and trigger extra baggage charges.

The zipper is mega-duty, but I don't think its water-tight by any means. I have the small and the med, and the flat bottom and the trapezoidal shape keep it up-right and easy to pack, (I'm looking at you, basecamp duffle), not to mention the fact that these things are pretty much indestructible. However, it isn't a dry-type bag by a long shot... not sure why the copy talks it up like that. Also, I don't know what they mean by 'shoulder harness'. Mine didn't come with a strap, just the top & side handles, which are also ridiculously burly. It does have sewn-in D-rings to accommodate a clip-in style shoulder strap, but I doubt you could carry this backpack-style.

As for sizing, the small is carry-on legal, but still plenty big. I fit a 5/4 wetsuit, booties, gloves, books, plus clothes for a week in there no problem. I use the same bag for toting my fly fishing gear and it easily fits boots, waders, chest pack, reel bag and still has room for rain gear.

All-in-all, an incredibly well-built and rock solid duffle. And at this price, a total bargain. You will probably give this to your kids (if you ever have any & can bear to part with it).

North Face does the same thing with their Base Camp duffels: waterproof fabric, but NOT waterproof seals (factory sealed) and zippers (the new type with rubber covers). These two improvements would make this type of duffel MUCH more water resistant (even if it doesn't make them completely waterproof). Seems like such a simple thing to change.
