The lightweight Gregory Women's Jade 50 Backpack carries everything you need for a weekend backpacking trip, a day at the climbing crags, or a longer ultralight backpacking journey. You can comfortably carry up to 35 pounds of gear in this backpack, which weighs substantially less than four pounds. Gregory gave this women's-specific backpack its Jet Stream suspension system, which features a perforated frame sheet and mesh back panel that allows for air flow between you and your pack. With padding in the lumbar region and at the shoulder blades, this pack feels comfortable on your back. Aluminum stays provide lightweight vertical load support, and the padded harness and waist-belt feature perspiration-wicking mesh. Get into your Jade from the top or the side, and stash snacks, camera, a light jacket, and other items that you want to easily reach in the various external pockets. Gregory made the Jade with high-quality ripstop nylon for an ideal combination of strength and low weight.

Bottom Line: The lightweight, rugged Jade 50 Backpack is your choice for weekend backcountry adventures.

Love this backpack!

THis is my first, so I have nothing to compare it to, but it is awesome! I was debating between the 50 and the 60 L, went with this because if I had the extra space, I would bring extra stuff I probably didn't need. Took it out on a 2 night trip in the desert of central Utah and it was awesome. Felt so light on my back, and there was plenty of room for everything! (If not, you can always just strap it to the outside). Ventilation is incredible! My back was completely dry the entire time except for the small spot by my hips. No bruising on either my hips of shoulders. Love all the pockets! The straps are many, but once you get a hold of it, they're awesome. Can't wait to take this out again!
The only thing I would change is at the bottom, there are straps for a sleeping pad. They don't buckle, which would be great for easy attaching. Instead you have to take them all the way out if your pad is bulky and retighten. Not terrible for the only negative!

Are there deep external pockets into which I can put sandals for after hiking? Is the top flap wide enough for Lonely Planet sized guide books and maps? Security pocket ?

great pack!

By:
June 12, 2008

Bought this for my girlfriend before a 1 week backpack trek through the Sabine National Forest and Indian Mounds Wilderness. Our first night, it rained heavily, had to setup our tent and equipment in a downpour. Both our packs (both are gregory's) kept our equipment dry. Over the course of the week, we ziplined our gear, crawled up hills of mud, waded through numerous creeks and dealt with an onslaught of scorpions. Through it all, the pack kept the gear safe, in tact, clothes dry.The womens version of the Z has more pockets and storage than the mens z55. The only down side is, my gf (a self proclaimed novice at camping) had to do a lot of adjusting on trail to get the most out of the bags comfort and suspension. The bag is also great as a day pack since it compresses down to such a compact size. Tip: the bags bladder pack is located on the very outmost point of the pack, to prevent punctures to your hydration bladder, refrain from installing the bladder til you're almost ready to hit the trail. Store it in a box or cooler upright during transit, and when installing use a piece of cardboard about 10 x 14 in between the bladder and zipper. This keeps sharp objects such as thorns, axes, snapped limbs, etc from poking a hole through the pack and into the bladder.

Wait, where does the bladder go? In the mesh pocket inside?

Appears you may have been using the wrong location to store your baldder. There is a designated bladder sleeve in the main compartment of the pack, just behind the the suspension/framesheet w/clips to hang it. You will also notice that there are small slots for your bladder hose to exit from and they be secured on your harness. Hope this helps.

hello~ I'm traveling through Norway's fjords for 4 days, no major hiking or back country traversing, just lots of trains & boats. Will this size pack be too big / small?

While I personally can't imagine bringing this big a bag for 4 days of sightseeing I realize that most people see this as normal.

I'd set out everything you plan on bringing, put it into a box and measure how much space it takes up.
If its around 2500 cubic inches (this pack holds up to about 3000) then this would be a good size.
Length times width times depth=size.

I use this size of pack for trips with full camping and climbing gear, so for traveling I take a day pack (about half this). My girlfriend does not have this philosophy and lugs around a giant pack.
I have no idea what's in it.

the most comfortable pack ever

By:
April 19, 2010

I had it for over 2 years and it's the best if you only want to own one pack for everything. the compression straps can make it very small if you're only going for a day hike, but it easily fits all the gear for an overnight trip. I carry everything in it, with the tent tied to the bottom. I can barely lift it off the ground, but once on my back and fully adjusted, I can barely feel it! Super comfortable bag. One thing though - if you are not a minimalist and have separate packs for day and multi-day hikes, I'd recommend maybe getting a little bit bigger, like 60 or 70. I keep eying Gregory Deva 70, but having Jade 50 already and it kinda works, makes it a hard decision. Go bigger if you're planning on a long trip and don't mind buying multiple packs for each purpose. If you only want to invest in one pack though - this one is the best you can ever find in terms of size and comfort. Love it!

Is the torso size adjustable?

Is the torso size adjustable?

Actually it is slightly adjustable. You can adjust the shoulder strap (where it attaches to the pack) up or down by one notch. That won't be adequate if you need a big adjustment, but it helps for longer or shorter torso lengths.

No. The pack comes in 3 different sizes. You should have your torso measured to figure out which one will fit. Here's a primer on how to do that: http://tinyurl.com/65e6me

Fantastic Mom's Backpack...

By:
October 28, 2009

I bought this pack for my wife before our trip to the Smoky Mt. She had been hiking before, but never for more then one night. This time she needed to carry a weeks worth of "stuff". Plus, as the week went by, her and I seemed to get more and more of our childrens equipment. I was amazed how much gear she could carry. I have always had Gregory backpacks, and have never been disappointed. I was jealous of the amount of outside pockets she had, even more then my Gregory Palisade 80 Backpack. She also liked this too, as she was always taking something out of her back for the kids. And when you get your backpack, take the time to adjust it to your body, this makes all the difference in the world. You can have the best equipment money can buy, but if you don't take time time to fit it properly it will never feel right. She never did any complaining about pack, just the rain... But everything she had did stay dry. Bottom line, this is a great Backpack.

Jade 50

By:
March 26, 2010

This is my first pack and I love it! It has plenty of room for my gear (which is a little bulky) and it is super comfortable. Little adjustments here and there along the trail have made it that much more comfortable! I would reccomend this pack to any beginner!!
