Description

A big, comfy pack for women who can't get enough trail time.

Your week-long trek through the Sierras demands a heavy load and the Gregory Deva 70 Backpack features women's-specific Response AFS suspension to help you carry it over the rugged trail. Incorporating a reduced torso size and soft, contoured shoulder straps, the Response AFS suspension maintains a rigid structure thanks to an aluminum stay and advanced thermo-molded EVA back panel.
  • Thermo-molded EVA back panel and a grippy lumbar pad increase load transfer to your hips
  • Soft, adjustable EVA waist belt rotates independently from the pack to provide support as you move through the mountains
  • Front zipper access to the main compartment makes lunch breaks quick and easy
  • Removable top lid doubles as a lumbar pack or sling bag and features a stash pocket for quick spurs off the main trail
  • DWR-coated, water-resistant zips prevent rain drops from invading your extra dry layers
  • Bottom-accessed sleeping bag compartment separates your bag from other gear
  • Several external pockets keep your knife, camera, and map within reach
  • Top, bottom, and side compression straps shrink the Deva into a stable package when not fully loaded

I plan going on a 4-5 days hike trip...

I plan going on a 4-5 days hike trip (Yellowstone, Yosemite or Death Valley, haven't made my mind yet!). I've read the reviews and so far I'd be interested in Gregory Deva 70 or the Osprey Xenon (or the new Xena) 70. Any major differences between those two bags? Any suggestions? Thanks!

This pack is hands down my favorite women's bag. My wife's sister uses this and I prefer it over the Jade (which my wife has). The main difference (besides the size) is the separate compartment for your sleeping bag and pad in the bottom. I like being able to keep the gear separate (I pack both my wife's and sisters bags) and having easy access to the bulky gear that you usually remove first (sleeping items) is handy. We regularly do 3-4 nights in the Sierra Nevada's and my wife's sister brings ALL her own stuff including tent, sleeping items, clothes, all her own food and way too much other stuff she doesn't need. She wouldn't be able to do this with other bags. My wife's Jade couldn't get that job done. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Agreed! I'm an organizational neat-freak so having all the separate compartments is great. Happy trekking!

It's a full horseshoe zipper which allows access to the main compartment. You can get to anything in the pack through there. Works great!

How do you measure for a backpack?

Back length is the distance between your 7th cervical vertebra (the one that sticks out on your neck) and the line between your iliac crests (tops of your hip bones).

Vicki, I highly recommend going to an outdoors store to get "fitted" for a bag. If you measure yourself and buy a bag based on that, the bag could be the wrong fit and could compromise your musculoskeletal health and increase your chances for injury. Be careful!

I just got my pack in the mail but will sadly have to return it for a smaller size. The size chart says a medium size pack will fit an 18" torso, however after shortening the straps they were still 3 inches above my shoulders. I'm 5'5", which is the average height for women so if you're on the border between a small and medium with your 18" torso, choose the smaller size.

The pack is an upgrade from my Gregory 60 and it has a lot more room and pockets. The pockets on the hip straps will be perfect for holding those things you need to access frequently (e.g. digital camera, bug spray) and the extra pocket on the front is perfect for storing layers, gaiters, etc. that your hiking partner can get easily for you without having to take your pack off or try to zip closed.

I bought it in red and the color is very nice. It's a deep red that's cheerful, not obnoxious.

I bought this for my wife as an early Christmas gift. She loves it! It is about 24 oz heavier than the little pack that she had been using, but the extra weight is from the heavier material and padding and the extra pockets and organizers that this pack has built into it. It is designed to carry moderately heavy loads if needed, but she packs light so her typical pack weight is about 25 lbs for a 3 day trip, and that includes her new Deva 70 pack. Once it was adjusted properly to her body she stated that this pack actually felt lighter than her old Gregory Jade 60 that she was using before, even though it was filled with the same items and the same weight. Not only that, but she has room left over to pack winter clothing if needed.

So far she has only hiked about 20 miles with it during that one 3 day trip, so we can't speak to it's long term durability, but we have no reason to believe that this pack won't prove to be very durable. So far she still loves it and has no complaints at all.

The bottom line is that she is able to carry the same amount of gear with greater comfort and greater organization than her previous pack, despite the extra weight of the pack itself.

For reference, she is 5'3" and weighs about 108 lbs with a 16" torso length. The extra small fits her very well.

Very Comfy Pack

I bought this pack to upgrade from a smaller, lighter version. This pack is heavy, I will say that. I used it for 3 days on a 50 mile hike but could have easily stretched it out for more days. I am 5'2" and 125 lbs...I carried 45 lbs on my back, including the pack weight. It was super comfortable the entire trip, except that I when I was tired, it became difficult to lift back up onto my back, not a design flaw of the pack. The compartments are great. My favorite was two side zippers, where I put my 3L hydration bladder. This was awesome for quick and easy water refills instead of trying to get into the main compartment every time. The zippers on hip belts were key for quick snack breaks and easy access items. The external zippered accesss to main compartment was great when I wanted something on the bottom... I didn't have to unload everything. The outside elastic flap (with buckle closure over) was great to put more easy access items I frequently used. The top hood zipper was great for lots of things as well, like my headlamp and trash bag. I really liked the right side nalgene pocket, which is angled so that it is easily accessible while walking. The compression straps compress down very tight, which is great when you don't have a lot to pack!!! great pack, very durable. wouldn't trade it for anything else.

Will be thru hiking the A.T. Can this pack handle a long trek?

I used a similar Gregory pack, but a mens version, before. I guess it depends on how long the "long" trek will be. In my opinion, the size of this pack is great for medium range treks, from 3-4 days. If you are careful in what you pack, you could stretch it to a day or two more. If not, I would recommend a larger pack.

The gregory brand is a solid label. I've never had a problem with their packs and they tend to have POCKETS!! The ripstop fabric should withstand the beating the A.T. tends to give some people in the more rigorous sections.

HAVE FUN ON YOUR TRIP!

This pack is very comfortable and is one of the best of the Gregory line. If your question is related to the pack's durability I am confident that it will hold up for the 4-5 months on the AT. It's a very well built backpack.

A simple answer for you: YES!! This is an amazing pack, it should last years with a little common sense and with a little TLC when you get home from your trip. Have a great time! We are thru-hiking the AT in 2014.
