They kept the features that you need and got rid of everything else. This bag has two tool loops, crampon straps, gear loops on the waist-belt, and that's it. No panel access, no zippers, not even a lid. It depends on how you are going to use it. How much weight are you going to carry? This pack holds 30lbs max. Some more info about your trip would help with a better answer.

Love love love this pack. I realize it is old and out of stock but very similar to the newer blaze AC 60 or Crown VC 60. For 2lb 10oz you cant beat the comfort and carrying capacity, not to mention the crampon straps and side compression straps allow you to compress the hell out of this thing. Similar to a smaller simpler Wild Things Anadista pack. I have carried upwards of 50-60lbs with this pack with skis and boots strapped to the sides with no problem. not one thread or seam has been compromised despite hitchhiking and backpacking across the country and back!

I just used it for 4 days climbing in the high Sierra and it carried really well, even with all of my climbing gear. While it's not as nice as a full-blown pack when you have 40lbs+ (such as on the approach), it worked surprisingly well and the weight difference is worth it. Seems pretty durable so far too.

The Alpine Vapor is about the right size, but it doesn't have the load capacity of other packs of the same size. It's also meant as more of an alpine climbing pack than one for traditional backpacking (they make a Vapor Trail model that may be better suited). The vapor suspension it uses is meant for 30 lbs or less, and he will probably need to carry 35 or 40 lbs at one point or another. Try looking at the Granite Gear Nimbus pack series or look at the Osprey Aether 60. You could consider a little larger pack (70 to 75 liters) if there are any plans to go on longer trips like one at Philmont, but that means having excess capacity most of the time. Involve him in this search and you'll find something that works well. Good luck.
