Description
Battling a headwind is never fun, but at least now it’s a lot more tolerable.
You can expect to encounter a variety of conditions over the course of a long ride; you’re prepared for them all when you wear the Gore Bike Wear Women’s Phantom SO Jacket. Gore WindStopper efficiently combines a shell’s ability to block cold, penetrating wind with the softness and breathability of fleece. As the day warms up, zip off the raglan long sleeves to convert the Phantom SO into a short-sleeve jacket that provides a little more coverage than a vest. Gore Bike Wear designed the Phantom with a cyclist’s posture in mind, so you ride in complete comfort when you’re bent over the bars. Three back pockets stow the sleeves and give you easy access to your stash of snacks. Reflective piping makes you more visible in low-light conditions.

a little short for people with long torsos

I absolutely love this jacket, but if I could change one thing it would be the length. I am only 5'4" but I have a long torso. I find that the length is about 2-3 inches too short. I have to wear a blank singlet underneath it so that my back side doesn't show. The length of the arms is just fine though.

Love this jacket! I lost it 2 years ago in an adventure race and I have been longing to get another one. Great deal from Back country. I was in it today and so happy to have it.

I am a MountainTech member at GORE-TEX, and I do some product testing for Gore and Windstopper products. I hadn't known that Gore did cycle wear until I got a chance to try out this jacket. OK, I love this jacket for many reasons.
* It keeps me warm, dry, and comfortable in my chilly, damp, Pacific Northwest rides. Absolutely perfect for this climate. Softshell is thicker than a regular cycling jacket, and the water just beads up on the surface then wicks away.
* On a recent bicycle tour, we had extended wind every day of the ride. The jacket performed like it was supposed to - totally blocked the wind.
* Same trip, sideway-rain squall. Wicked the rain. I did not stay in the rain for an extended period, though, so not sure how long the rain resistance would last in those conditions.
* I especially loved the sleeve length. I have long arms, and this covers down to the tops of my cycling gloves. The fabric is thinner and stretchy at the forearms and wrists, so not overly tight.
* It is attractive. Form-fitting but not too tight.
Two notes:
* When I zipped off the arms I was surprised that it is short-sleeve instead of a vest. It was comfortable, but I'm still undecided how I feel about that feature.
* Don't get white.
One thing I would change:
* The back pocket was a decent size, but it felt too high up on my back and a little deep to reach into it easily. It felt awkward. But overall a really really great jacket - I love it and would definitely recommend it.

I'm typically size small, 34 chest, but had to go Med in Capo top. Does this have "European" fit like Capo, or will my usual size small be OK?

If you haven't already figured out what size to order, I would recommend order one size up in all Gore bike wear. I normally wear a XL in Giordana, etc., (40 bust), but I have to go up in this and L.G. I like to be able to wear a base layer when it gets cold out, and have enough room and coverage, too. Wouldn't say it's a Euro. style, just smallish.
Hope this may still help, or help someone else with the same question!
Great Jacket!

I live in Minnesota and the weather is unpredictable here to say the least! Love the versatility of the jacket! It is completely windproof, lightweight and warm. Have not had the opportunity to zip out the sleeves on a ride yet but they seem quite easy to use and do stuff nicely in the reear pockets.
Like the jacket so much I will probably buy another in a different color. ;o)
awesome for commutes (and srs rides!)

Fantastic value. S size fits great (5'2" - 120lbs) and the thickness of the jacket is perfect for a good range of temperatures (30-60 degrees) with varying base layers. Love the added length in the back - good coverage and does not ride up.
The zip off sleeves are cool, but there is no way I'd be able to zip these sleeves on without taking the whole jacket off to finagle it (maybe in time...). Note that the neon yellow is not the lemon yellow pictured but a true, flourescent, greenish-yellow neon, which is great on the road but a little too intense if you end up wearing the jacket indoors. I'm exchanging for the white.

Add a Windstopper base layer. You may still want to beef it up with some sort of wool mid. layer; just have to experiment and see what works best for you.

Great jacket for the price, used it for a ride up the Los Angeles Crest HWY were temperatures dipped down to the high 30's F. It does not breath as well has other ones, for the climb up I had to remove the sleeves which was no problem at all. On my descend down with the wind chill factor this jacket rocked!! I was able to make it down hill without stopping to warm up. The sleeve zippered up with no problem. I have unzipped them off twice and experience no problems with the zipper. For the price this jacket is great for cold weather.
This Coat is a Winner

Purchased this coat for my wife's birthday. The one thing that stood out to her as well as me is that the coat is lined. The lining allows the sleeve zippers not to be an issue. By issue, I mean my wife is very sensitive to things that irritate her skin; labels, zippers and seams. The lining prevents the irritation factor. So from my perspective that makes the coat a winner

I recently purchased a Gore jersey (Phantom Summer Sleeveless jersey) in a size XL and the fit is just about perfect for me. However, I have found that when it comes to jackets, I usually need to go up 1 size in order to accommodate an extra layer underneath. Would that be the case with the Gore Phantom SO jacket? Should I go up to an XXL? Or is it true to size and I'll have no issues wearing a baselayer (like UnderArmour ColdGear) underneath it comfortably if I stick with an XL?
Robert Thomas

It should fit pretty true to size, but will be a *little* roomier than the Phantom Summer lady sleeveless jersey. If you plan on wearing a thinner base-layer, you should be OK in the XL, but if you plan on wearing a thicker thermal jersey underneath, consider going up to the XXL.
Either way, take confidence in realcyclist.com's exchange policy!
hope that helps,

I find I always have to go to a XXL in Gore (and L.G.) so that I have room for base layers, and for overall length and better articulation. Depends on personal preference, of course.

Does this jacket become short sleeved or sleeveless?

This jacket is full WINDSTOPPER when the long sleeves are zipped on, but converts to a Short Sleeve Jersey with a WINDSTOPPER front when you remove the long sleeves. The zips to remove the sleeves also double as pit-zips.
The Phantom SO can be worn as a long-sleeve jersey, Jacket, or short-sleeve jersey - it has 3 traditional pockets in the back.
hope that helps,

I ordered this jacket as a rain jacket, so maybe I misunderstood its function when I ordered it. The problem in using this as a rain layer is that where the sleeve intersects the collar, the fabric is loose. The sleeves zip off, which is a nifty feature, but since the sleeve then doesn't actually attach to the collar in anyway, it would be an easy place for rain to get into your jacket. I can't figure out why they didn't just put a velcro closure or something.
The fabric, color, and construction of the jacket is really nice. If the sleeve had some kind of seal at the neck, I would definitely keep it. But as is, it doesn't work for what I need.

Key watch-word: water RESISTANT, look for that in the description of any jacket you're interested in to know whether or not the item is waterproof, or just water "resistant'. Try the ALP-X 2.0 for great waterproofness/wind-proof...but keep in mind, this jacket is only a shell. Hope this helps for your future purchases!
Just what I was looking for

I bought this after sending back the Giordana Silverline. This Gore is just what I wanted and then some. I wear it more as a jersey than a jacket - with just a base layer under. It is comfortable and gets me through those rides that start at 35 and warm up into the 50s. I really like that as the temps and my exertion climb, I can zip off the sleeves and have a short sleeve jersey. The overall cut of the jacket is lovely, the fabric is comfortable and in general, I think the quality is high. I like that the cuffs aren't elastic. If I could improve one thing on this jacket, it would be the length in back - a wee bit more coverage would be nice. I'm wondering if a taller person (I'm 5'1") would find it too short?

Update: The more I wear this the more I love this jersey/jacket. If temps are in the 40's-50's, it's all I need with a baselayer. And it wears beautifully. There are several men and women in my cycling club who have this, as well. And they all look great in them and love them as much as I do. My best purchase this winter (next to my shoe covers :))
