Nice and fitted well.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

light weighted,good for spring,fall weather.
and looks good.

Comfortable jacket.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

It's not very tight, so it won't get uncomfortable if it gets very hot during your ride. The material still works as advertised though: it will block wind chills if it gets windy.

I like.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

The fit is very good, could maybe be a tiny bit longer in the front. It does exactly what it's supposed to do, blocks wind, breaths and allows you to easily shed heat with a slight unzip if you're on a big climb. A few upgrades would make it perfect for me:

1. The zipper is a bit fussy in the transition between the top and the kink between your neck and chest but maybe that's a function of the material and the fit, quality zipper for sure.

2. The pocket in the back is not good, it's too big and deep so it's tough to get stuff out especially with the bulky zipper flap. A better design would be to use a standard 3 pocket approach maybe made out something different than the jacket, something that stretches a bit, mesh maybe. I hate the pocket. Could maybe line one of the pockets with something water resistant and have a zipper or some velcro on that one pocket.

3. Some small mesh pit holes placed out of the wind might help it regulate temperature better.

4. Could maybe be cut for a bit more forward lean. I sometimes have to shrug my shoulders to get it to come up a bit so I'm not getting resistance across the back.

Very limited wind flap.

How "waterproof" is this item? Is it more of a water resistant wind stopper?

Responded on

"Windstopper" fabrics are only H2O resistant.

"GoreTex" (it'll say GT) fabric is Water-Proof.

This jacket is made from "WindStopper" fabric...water resistant.

Gore's ALP-X GT 2.0 is the ultimate "waterproof" jacket (but not warm, just a great shell, and a very good windbreaker in it's own right).

Great value Windstopper Piece

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Windstopper is amazing and will cut out every last bit of wind. This is an Active Shell piece, so very light and packable. Great addition to any jersey and the fit is pretty close to right on.

The RealCyclist description of this jacket...

The RealCyclist description of this jacket says waterproof. I bought the jacket, and the GBW garment labels say water resistant. Is there a difference?

Responded on

Technically the Windstopper membrane itself is waterproof, but this jacket is only water resistant. The issue is that the jacket is not seam taped - meaning in a long enough, hard enough rain, the jacket may leak at the seams. If you get caught out in a 20 minute shower, you'll be good to go. Otherwise, your best bet is to get a Gore-Tex jacket which is Guarenteed for Life to keep you dry.

Does this jacket have pit zips / vents?...

Does this jacket have pit zips / vents? .

Responded on

No pit zips, but the rear pocket is mesh and serves two purposes:
1. The whole jacket packs into the rear pocket and can be stowed away with the double-sided zipper.
2. The rear pocket is made of mesh and has a fairing over it to keep water from running in. If you open the top of the front of the jacket and the pocket - you can get some venting through the jacket.

how do these jackets run with sizes?...

how do these jackets run with sizes? generally wear a med. thanks

Responded on

These jackets run pretty honest. I'd go with a Medium if that's your normal size.

Also, have confidence in RealCyclist.com's exchange policy if there's any issue!

I'm looking for a Gore Tex jacket that is...

I'm looking for a Gore Tex jacket that is rather loose fitting and easily packable. I prefer a stow away hood if possible. Lastly the same jacket and color need to be available in both men's and women's versions. Any suggestions?

Dave

Hi Dave,

Your best bet is probably the Alp-x Gore-Tex jacket (men's and ladies').

Matching colors for both men and women, stow hoods, and they pack into their rear pockets. Also have drop tails.

They are not super-loose fitting, but are not tight either.

Hope that helps,

I am not sure whether to buy this or a Xenon AS Jacket. Any hints? Comparisons in fit, material, breathability, quality etc. thanks

Responded on

Hey Tim,

The jackets are very similar in terms of function: both are full Windstopper Active Shell (windproof, breathable, highly water resistent), both pack into their rear pockets and both are very light, and have mesh lined sleeves.

The Xenon is lighter, much tighter fitting and has a lot more reflective print on it. The Contest 2.0 AS is a little looser, though still close fitting, but will function as well as the Xenon.

hope that helps,

This jacket is Slim Fit according to the...

This jacket is Slim Fit according to the GBW website, but I see suggestions that it is tighter fitting than other jackets with this profile. It is called a "racing fit" in the GBW description. Is this a tighter-fitting version of the Slim Fit? I recently tried on a Countdown Jacket (also Slim Fit) and found that to have a pretty generous cut for me (in my usual size L). I'm thinking this one won't be quite as loose.

Responded on

Thomas,

You are spot on. Both are Slim Fit, but the Countdown is a little more generous, while this jacket (Contest 2.0 AS) is a little slimmer slim fit. It is also cut for a road riding position, so it is a little longer in the back and shorter in the front. Also, the arms are long and pre-articulated.

Hope that helps,
