Description
The one jacket to deal with it all.
Versatility, they name is the Gore Bike Wear Men?s ALP-X Zip-Off Jacket. Warm and water- and wind-resistant for cold, wet days, breathable enough for high-intensity rides, and with zip-off sleeves for when it warms up. ... Yep, that just about covers the bases. The jacket's WindStopper Active Shell efficiently combines a shell?s ability to block cold, penetrating wind with the softness and breathability of a fleece, and raglan long sleeves convert the Alp-X into a vest for core protection in changeable weather.
- Ergonomically-shaped high collar keeps the wind out when you're bent over the bars
- Zip Napoleon pocket and two-part back pocket with lateral zippers keep your goodies safe
- Ventilation slips with zips at the back of the sleeves allow for ventilation if it's not yet warm enough to remove the sleeves
- Reflective hits on the front, back, and sleeves make you more visible to half-wit motorists

I've been searching around for the right shoulder season jacket to keep me riding a bit further into the fall and earlier in the spring out here in Utah. The tough part for me was finding something that would work for MTB, road cycling as well as any other aerobic outdoor exercises. Personally, I think that this jacket was the perfect find.
The zip off sleeves make it super versatile for road and mtb. There are two zips per sleeve, so it is a bit of a task to get them back on, but nothing seriously bad. The windproofing of Gore is top notch, and though I haven't been out with it in a full down pour, the water beads right up and runs off in the slight shower it has been in. Oh, and the breathability is excellent, hasn't felt muggy or sticky at all.
NOTE, I am 5'8 and about 155lbs and the large fit me well for what I was looking for (not ultra slim, since I would be MTB in it). I can put a long sleeve base layer under it, but not much more, so I dont think I would have gone with a Med. Hope that helps...
All you can eat for $14.95!?

Rain proof? It's far from it. Marginally water resistant. More than 10 minutes in real rain and it becomes a soaking wet sponge.
Would this jacket be suggested for road...

Would this jacket be suggested for road biking and casual wear?
Is this jacket just a shell or is it somewhat insulated?
Thanks

This is a shell. Polyester lining, wind proof and rain proof.

The 'cut', or overall shape of this (and most other bike-wear) is specifically designed for the riding position on the bike, and might look a little 'off' when off the bike (if that makes sense). They usually have a longer 'tail' so to speak that helps cover rider and protect from the elements etc.; and just doesn't look quit right as street wear (of course, that's a personal choice at the end of the day).
And this is just a shell, as already mentioned. Gore runs a bit on the small side...I recommend order up, and you will have enough room for a Gore Windstopper baselayer for colder rides (they are awesome!) underneath. But for really cold rides, you might want to step up your base layer or even use this jacket as added protection over a warmer winter bike jacket.
My experience with the women's ALP-X 2.0 is that it is waterproof (don't over do the washing, or the protective 'coating' will eventually wear off. You can re-waterproof if necessary. Hope this may still help for future purchases!

Are you struggling to find a jacket that can manage the wind, heat and the rain? This jacket really does it all.
I have not tried the jacket in a downpour yet but riding through rain showers has not presented a problem as the water beads off this jacket.
If you get too warm you can remove the sleeves and store them in the pockets at the back. They fold down easily and you forget they are back there. The zippers that hold the sleeves on are very well constructed and easy to use but the fit of the jacket requires you to remove the jacket to remove them.
At first I found the lack of pit zips disappointing until I realized I could undo the front zip on each arm (possible to do while cycling) to let in the cooling air. Because of the location of these zips, they work much better than pit zips.
I also unzip the jacket sometimes to let in some cooling air. Because the rear pockets are mesh lined, you are able create a flow of air to help cool your back a little by opening the rear zippers.
For 2011, the sleeve material has been updated to match the material Gore uses for its Phantom gloves. This fabric is soft on the inside when worn against bare arms.
In general, I wish Gore would increase the reflective footprint of their jackets. Two 10" pipes on the back and a reflective Windstopper logo are just OK but could be improved upon.
Would a double ended zipper improve this jacket? or a built-in rain hood? or vented front zipper? I suppose they would but having used this jacket many times, it's pretty much perfect especially when combined with a wool jersey or long sleeve.

The price tag is well worth it. This jaket is awesomeness all rolled in to one. You noticed how I left a C out of jacket? Thats because theres nothing about this jacket that deserves a C. It is awesome, warm, and i'm getting the matching set of pants because its that good.

Try the 'new' ALP-X 2.0 (as of early 2013), it has just about everything you were wanting...and the hood is removable, and there's a tail' that you can unsnap to help protect from backsplash and heavy rain! A HUGE improvement over this series. Enjoy!
