  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

These cameras take all sorts of abuse from al sorts of crazy people. Mine has snaked its way up waterfall ice on an amazing trip, recorded birthday fun at restaurants, and take great pictures in any weather. This is a very popular camera because it really record anywhere you are doing anything. Glad I bought this camera!

What is the purpose of life? Live it

New Zealand canyon swing with the superman free fall, got it. Great Barrier reef scuba diving, got it. The first run down Big Emma for my 3 year old on ski's, you know it. The power to record life as you live it. On your terms. Go Pro!

    Best action cam

Video quality is very good for a little cam. The only problem is it records at only 30 fps at full HD. So if you want a smoother action, you have to lower the quality to 960 or 720. One nice feature is the cam can be setup to use up side down so you can mount it under the handlebar or saddle. It's a fun toy to have.

Great results out of the box

Out of the box straight to the trail and the results were great. Still learning all the settings and such but the quality is excellent even the packaging is cool. Comes with a good variety of mounts but I also purchased the bike and chest mounts. One session left me with some pretty high quality video (my riding and editing still leave much to be desired). Not as low profile as some of the other cameras but we'll see if that is an issue later.

        Best Camera Ever!

I upgraded to the HERO2 shortly after it was released. I've had a few months to play with it and it is better in every way than the HERO except for battery life. I have noticed an dramatic drop in battery life with the HERO2. Good thing I have extra batteries and a way to charge them when I'm out canyoneering!

            This is what you want

Let's get the obvious out of the way: you'll have a little box attached to you, and that can look goofy if you're out for a walk around the mall. But this is hands down the best camera for capturing action sports moments, which is what most people aim to use it for. The variety of mounts is insane and you can get really creative with how you're using the camera.

I highly recommend springing for the Hero2 over other options for compatibility with accessories: lcd screen, battery backpack, wifi backpack...and some special firmware updates (like the upcoming "ProTune") This is going to allow the GoPro record at bit rates that match or exceed most DSLRs.

Shoot at a high frame rate for smooth slow motion. Make sure your mounting job is steady so you don't end up with bouncy footage. If you're looking for high quality audio, pick up a self powered lavalier mic that can plug right into the side of the GoPro. Study up on the workflows (gopro support page) to help you maximize the quality of your video for exporting online. The menus might seem a little difficult at first, but 1 day of playing around with it and you'll be dialed on operating it without needing a cheat sheet.

Really, you're only limited by your own creativity with these things.

Obvious Improvements Make For Possibly the Best POV Option Right Now

I has handled the original version of the GoPro camera and after the giddiness of recording all my adventures (i.e. stupidity) wore off, I found that the resolution of what came out was lacking in low light and changing the settings was a bit of a chore.

I guess GoPro listened to me through osmosis or something as the second iteration has nearly impeccable resolution in sunny days, better in low light/water and the menu system is more than a bit intuitive instead of clunky. I am waiting now to try the new gadgets for this version (dive lens and wi-fi), but this score could get bumped up depending on the options and add ons developed. Considering all that was said above and the price has not changed from the original, I would venture to say that this is THE POV camera to have. For now at least

                Awesome when it's sunny

The beauty of the GoPro HD is that it's very small and High Def (HD). So you can literally take it anywhere and get amazing videos, and the occasional good picture. They have designed the case so that it's water and shock proof. I ski with, I mtn bike with it, I run with it. The only attachment I use is the head mount for skiing. I've tried the head strap and the chestie while running and the video turned out slightly more wobbly than if I had just had it in my hand.

It works best when the sun is out, and is worthless in bad lighting. Photos seem to be even more sensitive to poor light. For pictures there is no view finder, so you simply hold it out, in the direction of what you want to take a photo of. The other huge glaring issue is that because it's so very small there is virtually no room for user a friendly interface, so we're all left to learn (often the hard way) the language of the OS.

So, it's good for actions shots in good light. It's bad for almost everything else.

These camera are great. Resolution and pic quality is great for the price and the new upgrades here are awesome. 120fps for super slow motion, 3 options for framing, faster frames per second on still shots.... Hell yeah! Combine this with the viewfinder backpack and you just can't beat this pocket sized camera.

would the hero be good for scuba diving

The GoPro Dive housing has exactly the same water proof specks as the standard housing. The only difference is it has a different flat "lens cover" that accounts for the difference in refraction between water and air. Unless using the GoPro exclusively for underwater, or if you do not want to (or don't know how to) edit the slight vignetting, just use the standard case. Both cases are good to 60m (197'). All the editions of the camera are the same, pick the one that has the basic mounts you will use most (Outdoor, Motorsport, Surf)

If it is super bright under the water a red lens cover will make the colors pop... didn't know about it until I got back from the Great Barrier reef. Did use the dive housing, did get some great video. Wish the colors stood out.

Can you retrieve images in real time at a remote site? That is, is it live feed or is it restricted to record and playback later....

                        Hey Barry Katz,

Thanks for the question. With the current functionality on the GoPro HD HERO2 Outdoor Edition alone, this is not a possibility. However, GoPro is currently developing a Wi-Fi bacpac for streaming purposes. This bacpac should see a Fall 2012 release as an accessory and it could be possible to live feed pictures as it will be able to live stream video.

If images are all you are looking for while using the device, then the LCD bacpac, which is available now, is an accessory that fits on the back of the GoPro2 that allows you to see what the GoPro is showing at that particular moment.

I was just looking for a shockproof camera but then I saw this and thought it would be awesome. Can this be used to take regular pictures or is it strictly a camcorder?

Yes you can use it but you wouldn't know what picture you have taken unless you get the SD card out and then put it in your laptop to see what you have taken!!-- it doesnt have any viewfinder or LCD screen unless you buy the accessory which is another 99 dollars

Can someone tell me what's included in the box with this camera (GoPro HD HERO2 Outdoor Edition?) I see the attachment types on the side, but not specifically what's included for 300 bones. Would like to know what else I need to purchase. Thanks.

You charge the camera by plugging it into USB without turning it on.

As to your second question, I wasn't sure, so I went and tried. I was able to take a video with the camera plugged into a wall outlet. I'm guessing the same would be true via USB, so long as there isn't a data connection.
