If you enjoy HD quality recordings of your accomplishments, the GoPro HD Helmet HERO will make your video gnar bone tingle. Mount this cam about anywhere imaginable then send it from the highest peaks to the raddest surf around. The HD Helmet Cam records up to 2.5 hours of action on a single charge while the expandable memory of up to 32GB SD (not included) will store up to 4h 21m of 1080p quality video. GoPro videographers know that you like to play rough so they built a waterproof and shockproof housing that will protect your investment. Even if you manage to scratch up your lens or housing bad enough to impede video quality you can buy replacements at reasonable prices. If you want to create a montage of photos from your journey just set the camera to a desired time interval, hit the shutter button, and capture up to 2.5 hours of 5MP photographs on your way.

  • Average recording times with 32GB of memory:[1080p]4h 21min at 30fps; [960p] 5h 26min at 30fps; [720p]4h 21 min at 60fps; [720p] 8h 09min at 30fps; [WVGA] 8h 09min at 60fps
  • Operating system compatibility:[PC]Windows XP(service pack 2 or later) or Vista; [Mac] OSX 10.4.11 and later
  • Battery is a rechargeable 1100 mAh lithium-ion with a life of approx 2.5 hours that can be charge in 2 hours through USB connection- Optional power adapter charges to 80% in an hour
  • Waterproof Camera housing composed of stainless steel and polycarbonate- Rated up to 60 meters
  • Camera weight:[Without housing] 3.3oz (94g); [With housing] 5.9oz (167g)
  • Still photo resolution is 5MP with single shot, photo every 2, 5, 10, 30, or 60 secs, 3 photo burst, or self-timer capture modes
  • Included with your camera: 1 rechargeable battery, 1 waterproof quick-release housing, 1 headlamp-style head strap, 1 vented helmet strap, 2 curved 3M adhesive mounts, 2 flat 3M adhesive mounts, 1 three-way pivoting side arm assembly, 2 quick-release buckles, 1 USB cable, 1 component(HDTV) cable, 1 composite+audio out cable
  • SD memory card is not included with camera and can be purchased at your local electronics store

Bottom Line: Never go home empty-handed.

Great quality!

I have used one for some time last season. Simple to use and very small and compact. You can get pretty creative with camera angles with some of the included mounts for helmets and chest harness. The chest harness is the way to go as far as never losing the camera in a fall. The other mounts that use double sided tape to mount to the helmet do stay on well, but in a fall you could loose the camera. The head/helmet mount thats a strap like a head lamp is cool, but have seen others fall in powder and loose the camera. The biggest down fall is battery life in the cold. Other than that the quality is the best out there right now. The wideness of the lens is great, but mounting on your helmet makes you look like a weirdo.

I thought the camera could never fall off of the chest mount either..but be careful..it can. Use a tether on every shot if you can!

The Sickest Quality out there

By: Backcountry.com Sponsored Athlete
January 21, 2010

So not only is the GoPro Small Light and insanely durable, but the image quality is just insane! You can practically see the type of snow crystals that are forming in the snow.
The only area I see where the Gopro could improve is in it's LCD menu which can be frustrating at times as it seems to Jump out of video mode when you turn it on, but this could be user error. All and all this is an awesome new toy that I won't leave home without!!

Hey Kyle thanks! I just got the GoPro HD a month ago, so its not the camera I used last season. There is no power cord for the GoPro as it uses a battery. I've found the battery to be very reliable and long lasting. When the battery gets low, you plug it in to your computer via the USB cord that is included. They should have also included a standard charger that can plug into a wall outlet.

If you have a Mac, iMovie is the program that can mix shots and video. For Windows users, many film editing programs can do that too (free or purchased), but you have to make sure it is capable of editing HD footage or at least able to convert it. Also, before downloading or buying film editing software make sure your computer has the right specs to handle that kind of editing (RAM, Harddrive space, processor speed, graphics card, etc.) The goPro website has suggestions on what kind of programs to use to edit HD footage.

By:
December 26, 2011

This camera works for anything. the picture is amazingly clear, it will easily atach to almost anything, so you can get some really interesting shots. i personally like the pole cam angle, because with the wide angle lense it totally puts you in the action, instead of just a close up of you. the beeping noises are super helpful when you are turning it on and pressing record, because you dont have to take your helmet off to see if its recording. It works in most light conditions, from extremely bright to kinda dark. i bought this after i realised that the oregan scientific mounts dont sell replacements, and so i would have had to buy a new camera because one little piece of plastic didnt work. im super stoked about this camera, you should deffinatly buy it!

Really enjoy this and am constantly amazed at the quality, especially when plugged into a 1080 flatscreen with the hd cables. Not the most user friendly and a screen for viewing would be nice, I hear an adapter may be coming out. Be prepared to the use the owner manual to learn how to use it, but after that you should be good to go. Think about getting the check mount harness too, much more stable than on a helmet, good view too.

Awesome Camera!

By:
August 31, 2010

It's been said time and time again, but the Gopro is the BEST helmet-mounted camera you can get for the money.

It only has two buttons, but there are SOOO many options. At first it seemed like it was going to be somewhat confusing, but if you take a minute to read the directions, the gopro couldn't be any more user friendly.

The waterproof housing is money, and the durability can't be beat.

But my favorite part about the gopro, is all the creative ways and places you can mount the camera.I would highly recommend buying the extra grab-bag of mounts for $20 from the Gopro site. As corny as it sounds, the possibilities are nearly endless.

(I forgot to add...I would also recommend an extra battery and a 16MB memory card to keep you going all day long)

Amazing camera, you won't be disappointed!

Nothing Like IT

This camera is an unreal option in it's price range, and the quality of the camera. It doesn't skip a beat. I use the 720 60P and convert it to DVCPRO 720-60P the slow motion looks amazing after Conforming it to 24P in Cinema Tools. If you love to document your adventures you really can't go wrong with this amazing camera. If you are looking to use the audio don't even bother. But the quality of the shots is well worth it. I will be posting footage from the camera.

Looks goofy, but worth it!

By:
July 27, 2010

Yes these do look dumb on your helmet, but when your riding with your buddies something funny or stupid always happens right, well put one of these on your head then you can have the footage to watch over and over and laugh your ass off! The quality of this camera is really amazing for $300, the sound is also really good too. I like to use the back plate with the holes in it for skiing the sound is deff better, just cove the holes with tape so the camera dose not get wet. Only draw back in performance is the snow dose get blown out on bright sunny days but it only really looks bad if your riding wide open bowls, there is no definition to judge the terrain and it's pretty hard to watch back on a monitor. Also if you crash hard you get the dreaded CMOS jelly vision to go along with your aches and pains. Be sure and get a class 4 or higher memory card, I usually use a 16gb PNY card I picked up from wall mart for $40 and it has worked perfect all season. Also if your going to use the helmet strap be sure you tether it to something you wont loose, way harder finding one of these in powder than a ski. I always have this with me ready to go, the footage I got last winter was worth it's weight in Gold!

Great. But Dorky

By:
February 18, 2010

As you can see from the reviews below, the footage from this cam is as good as if not better than the top end prosumer market.

There's no avoiding it; having a box on top of your head is just plain dorky. But if you can take looking like a dork, it's well worth the footy you'll get.

I also got the chest mount, but don't use it often as i've found that the best-cleanest-most usable footage comes from the helmet mount.

The chest mount footy is cool for some different perspectives but when you ski your head remains the most stable place to film from.

Amazing Camera

By:
October 13, 2010

This camera is absolutely the best P.O.V camera on the market. The wideness is amazing in 960p and 1080p. The HD quality for it is just ridiculous for how good it is. The chest mount is definitely the way to go if you want more stability and it's safer for the camera so it doesn't fall off. Extra batteries are only 20 dollars so you can have two with you when your out skiing in case one dies. It is a little bit tricky to set up your mounts and figure it all out, but if you fiddle with it for a few days you understand pretty well and makes it very easy to use. Undoubtedly the best camera on the market even though it makes you look very weird.

these things are easy to use and won't take a bake sale to subsidize. I will say that a few extra lithium batteries in your pocket is not a bad idea on the longer days of usage. Cold weather can easily cook a rechargeable in too short of a time. The chest mount makes it much easier to operate without the guesswork of its operation or the extension off of your head.

GoPro Test Powder

By: Backcountry.com Employee
February 25, 2010

This footage is just from a day at Snowbird UT testing out my new GoPro HD Camera and Chest Mount. I am trying to decide still how much I like the chest mount as compared to the helmet mount. It does allow you to see your skis and the horizon at the same time easier, but also looks weird whenever your arms raise above the level of the camera (dropping a cliff, etc.).

Footage isn't great, mostly because I was testing the camera as well as frame rates. The HD on this camera looks awesome though for sure!

My home network wasn't working when I threw this video together and there were about 10 random songs on my computer, I decided this one was as good as any. If anyone has some cool music that I could throw in an edit sometime let me know, would love some spanish guitar.

More video to come.

P.S. That day at the Bird was awesome! I was testing out the Lib Tech NAS Pow ReCURVE skis. A review will be posted on skijosh.com soon.

Awesome camera

By:
April 5, 2010

This thing is super tough. I've fallen on it while it was in my ski jacket, and I've dropped it a few times, and it still has no visible wear. The videos are amazing, although sometimes the super wide angle lens can be a little much (as far as distortion goes). I also love the great still shots it takes. Even though it's only 5MP, it takes sharp, crisp images as long as you've got enough light.Make sure you've got a high quality HD card otherwise the camera may lock up (although I've never experienced this, my friend was until he got a faster SD card). Also, GoPro claim there is a firmware update, but it's all but vapor ware at this point. No big deal really, but I'd like to have the extra features they are promising. Attached an image I took with it.

I'm going to (at least partially) answer my own Q. After comparing http://www.goprocamera.com/index.php?area=2&productid=33 and http://www.goprocamera.com/index.php?area=2&productid=29, it looks like the Helmet Hero and the Hero Naked are identical except for what they come packaged with. Both contain the following:
1 HD HERO Camera (5 megapixel)
1 Rechargeable 1100 mAh Lithium-Ion Battery
1 Waterproof Quick-Release Housing (180’/60 m)
1 USB Cable
1 Component Video (HDTV) Cable
1 Composite Video + Audio Out Cable
Warranty: One Year

The Naked comes with 1 Curved, 3M™ Adhesive Mount while the Helmet comes with 2 Curved, 3M™ Adhesive Mounts

And the Helmet contains the following (but the Naked doesn't contain any of these items):
1 Headlamp-Style Head Strap
1 Vented Helmet Strap
2 Flat, 3M Adhesive Mounts
1 Three-Way Pivoting Side Arm Assembly

Maybe there are other differences, but I didn't see them on the site.

I have mounted this to our truck in Moab, my foot for rappelling, my longboard, the video this does is just awesome! Even the 5 megapixel stills are amazing and my main cameras are 15 megapixel SLRs that shoot video. This camera is like a fisheye lens cause it is so wide, but that makes it one of a kind. Simple to use once you figure out the way it works with the menu. All around amazing!

Skijosh.com February Edit

By: Backcountry.com Employee
September 25, 2010

I am not sure why, but it was hard to find time to edit this season. I have a bit of footage, so over the next few weeks I will be releasing a few edits of me and my friends skiing in Utah. This entire edit was shot with a GoPro HD Hero camera. They are awesome little camera's, I highly suggest you pick one up for yourself.

It has been a while since I have edited, but I threw this together in one afternoon. It turned out fairly well. After watching the footage from February, I think I might be liking the helmet footage more than the chest mounted camera footage. What do you think?

There was supposed to be a ton more footage to come after this, but my RAID 5 drive failed after a BIOS flash and I lost all of my ski footage from March-May including but not limited to: 30 foot cliffs, misty flips, powder nose butters, pillows, and double tomahawks in death chute....yes, double tomahawks in death chute.

Hopefully I can get some cool Mountain Bike and Wakeboarding stuff up here..

Getting with the high times

By:
January 13, 2010

I just recently got the HD Gopro after using the normal hero wide camera. I figured it was time to get with the high definition times. One of the best features on it other than the better video quality is the rechargeable battery; no more need to waste tons of money on triple A batteries like the old one. Aside from that, it works flawlessly on the slopes or anywhere you wanna take it.

Pretty darn good

By:
February 18, 2010

Yes it's lame looking but damn it the footy is rad. I have the regular GoPro helmet cam and after working with a buddies yesterday I have to say I am very impressed with the upgrades given to the product. The rechargeable battery is HUGE.

The old GoPro eats lithium batteries like nobodies business and you had to constantly remove them to prevent battery drain. Also, the HD quality is very good. These same friends traded in their "cool" looking POV cam for the sturdiness, simplicity and compatibility of the new GoPro.

Also, with all the mounting optionx available you should be able to get some pretty sweet shots other than helmet. Hint: Try attaching the interchangable helmet mount to the end of a ski pole and hold out the pole in front for a sick shot.

Awesome

By:
January 19, 2010

It's been said, the camera is amazing.
Some things I have found:
It loves bright days.(the quality of vid on a sunny day is seriously awesome)
It's pretty easy to work(on/off, start/stop recording) on the helmet after a day or so of use.
I am basically new when it comes to any sort of filming but you have to be pretty close to what you want to record to get a quality shot.(I assume this is because of the widescreen but again I am new)
If planning to edit I think the vids have to be converted out of the H264 format of mp4. Still working on that though.

Love the camera I highly recommend it.

Siiiiiick camcorder

By:
January 29, 2011

I did a fair mount of research before purchasing the GoPro. In terms of video options, clarity, etc it is dead even with other major camcorders. Distinct advantages are the near bomb-proof case and being waterproof up to 180'. Simple to use. Be sure to get a second battery as they only last about 2 hours (whihc is the major limitation, not the storage size). I use two 16GB calss 10 cards with 2 batteries. I also found that recording in 720p @ 60fps is best for making vids so the slow-motion segments look seamless. I have dropped this from over 6' to flat concrete with no issues beyond a minor scuff to the case lens area. You want durable, functional, and lightweight then look no further.

Go watch the footage. In my opinion the footage from the VholdR is much worse than from this camera due to the lower quality CMOS sensor which causes the footage to look more jumbled and jittery than with the GoPro. This is especially noticeable when the VholdR is used in a situation where everything in the sides of the field of view are moving at high speeds (such as biking on single track).

Best Camera Ever

By:
July 11, 2011

Last March I took this camera out for a big powder day of skiing. In my excitement I just slapped one of the sticky pads to my helmet on the way up to the mountain... bad move. When I got to the mountain they had gotten about 16" of snow and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. I rushed over to one of my favorite runs, slapped on my skis, and headed down. I got up to speed and took about four turns before I crossed up my tips, double ejected, and landed right on the top of my head. When I stopped rolling I felt the top of my helmet and nothing was there... my heart sank. After searching for about 30 minutes I gave up but continued to ride the lift the rest of the day to see if I could spot it. On one ride up one of my friends said they saw something... so we went over and took a look. It was a Go Pro!!! Unfortunately, it wasn't mine so I turned into the lifty hoping that someone would do the same with mine if they found it. No one ever did. This past weekend my girlfriend suggested we go look for it since I knew where approximately where I fell. Although I didn't think there was anyway we would find it, I was bored and agreed. Right when we were about to give up looking, I looked over and there it was!!! I couldn't believe it! Although we had found it I didn't think there was anyway that it would work once plugged in... I was wrong!! After being buried in the snow for four months, as soon as the battery was charged it fired right up! This camera and the housing are exactly as advertised... bomb proof!!

GoPro HD Helmet Hero

By:
February 23, 2010

Camera is fantastic, it takes some use to get accustom to it. At first I didn't realize it beeped to let you know it was recording (beeping three times to tell you it stopped). Guess my music was too loud. =) I actually RMA'd the first one I recieved, it wasn't working 100% as expected, but backcountry had a new one in my hands in two days which was great. The new one works perfectly. I will say when you plug into USB, sometimes it doesn't react as expected, just unplug it and plug it back in (to charge or go into USB mode). Finally, I've seen a lot of reviews out there with problems with various memory cards. I plugged in a Kingston Series 4 SDHC and it worked right from the start (4GB), just ordered a 16GB for a nice trip we have coming up. Great little camera, well worth the money,

no I had it moving to video mode alright and the three shot burst mode looks quite different then the little camera. the card just wasn't fast enough. you need a class 4 or 6. I ended up with a 4gb class 6, it was the only class 6 I could find. still having trouble editing. I know you can convert the files but it seems like such a pain.

Looks like all my troubles were from everything but the camera. Once I got a good card it worked as it should. I had problems viewing the clips though and in editing them. mpeg4 seems to be giving my avs editing software fits. I can upload the footage directly to the web but every time I try and work with the clips its choppy. I've read others having this same problem. As far as using it goes the thing is great. It stores easily in a pocket and I just use the head band. Feels like one of those old petzl headlamps. It a lot less hassle free then the lipstick cameras. the video has turned out great

ok I've switched sd cards and the camera is recording now but the video jumps a bit, seems to miss a frame and doesn't flow. does this mean the card that I'm using still isn't the best for the job its a film pro 2gb sd card. I emailed your support link on wed but with the holidays I haven't heard back yet. I like the versatility of the camera but it still has a few aspects that aren't working as I had hoped. Lets hope I can get it ironed out.

Hi Mark,

This is likely either a problem with your SD card or your SD card is a make/model that doesn't work well with the HD HERO. Almost all major brand cards CLASS 4 or 6 work perfectly with the camera: Kingston, Sandisk, Patriot, etc. all work well.

A Kingston Class 6 SD card is the card of choice...and is a low cost card. You do not need a crazy fast card to work with the camera.

Certain off-brand cards are unreliable and even some of the super high speed cards can act up...there's no reason to use a faster card than Class 6.

If you have an questions please reach us through this page http://www.goprocamera.com/contact and we'll help you further.

We'll get it sorted so that you're experience is money just like the rest of these guys - GoPro Support

Pretty Dope

By: Backcountry.com Employee
August 14, 2011

I gave this Helmet Camera 4 stars because it is the best helmet camera on the market right now as far as I am concerned. It is not, however, the best potential camera that GoPro could make.

It has better quality footage than any other helmet camera, but its not that durable (I have broken 3), the way they let you mount it all take way too long to set up, they need to make the case close more securely. They should make the sensor larger, they should make the body a perfect square instead of a rectangle (that way you can set it up on the side or on top of your helmet easier). They should put bluetooth in it so that you can stream video to your phone (rather than use a gimmicky LCD screen attached to the back). They should give it 60fps 1080p and 960p video (so that we dont' have to use 720p just to get decent footage).

GoPro's got it down with these. They are super easy to use, adjust and film with. The quality is amazing and this bad boy is a lot of fun to use. I had mine down in lake Powell for a week and the battery life was great, we filmed almost every day while we were wake boarding and had plenty of battery life. It's extremely durable as well, which is a bonus since I've just started using it for dirt biking as well. It's one of the best recording devices to carry in my opinion.

Best One Out There......

By: Backcountry.com Employee
June 4, 2011

For now. The aspects about this camera that separates it from the others (VIO, Contour) is its versatility in what activities it can be used for, how many different ways it can be mounted, its easy apparatus and low cost. This explains exactly the positives I see when I use this camera along with the fact that it gives what it says, HD quality video and pictures.

I also find that there are a few things to note. All the video files are in an uncompressed format when stored in the device (MPEG) and if one wants to tweak anything, a video editor such as Apple's IMovie or anything higher is a necessity. Also, a program that converts MPEG files to an uncompressed version such as an AVI file is recommended. Also, if you are planning on running the GoPro at a higher resolution (r4 or r5) for more than a couple hours, invest in a second battery and at least an 8gb memory card.
