Hammocker's dream!

I got this to use with my hammock and have to say it's perfect. It's absolutely made to be used as a top quilt. The footbox is sturdy and warm and the whole thing has a lot of loft. I've only had it down to 50F, but I have no reason to down the temp rating isn't accurate.

Nope, no hood or bottom on this one. More like a mummy shaped blanket.

So with it's design, are you actually sleeping directly on your pad? Like skin to pad contact?

That is correct. There is no bottom to this bag, it essentially tucks under your pad (which you are sleeping directly on) and acts almost as a quilt.

What does the "40 degree down" mean? If temps are less than 40, you might be cold?

40 degrees generally refers to the temperature at which the bag is rated to be comfortable (or to survive) and the "down" is what the bag is filled with. This bag is filled with 800 fill down (a specific size/weight/insulation value of feathers) as opposed to being filled with a synthetic insulating material such as polarguard. Does that help?

It's a rating sytem for the lowest temperature that you should stay warm at. It's a really subjective thing though, some people are hotter when they sleep, some colder. Basically one person needing less blankets than another. I usually like a bag rated at least 10* below whatever I think I'll expect temp wise. Better to be able to lower your temp by opening the zipper, than to be cold and miserable with nothing you can do about it except piling on clothes. Be sure to get a ground pad. Hope that helps.
