The Golite Ether Windshirt is a marvel of packability—it compresses down to the size of an energy bar. You'll never have an excuse to be without rain and wind protection again. The first thing you think when you see and feel the Ether is "Damn, this thing's light!" With the Ether's miniscule 3 ounces, you won't notice it in your pack, and aside from its incredible wind and rain protection, you'll barely notice you're wearing it. Stash it in your hydration pack or even a cargo pant pocket for any outdoor adventure. The durable water resistant (DWR)-finished Ether is an excellent ultralight choice for a spring or summer wind and rain shell. A close cousin to Golite's Wisp Windshirt, the Ether features a trim-adjustable hood for when the weather turns especially ugly.

Bottom Line: Shells don't get lighter or smaller.

Light and compact, but way too wet inside

By:

Okay for an outer layer if you're not all sweaty, but if you need to vent this won't do it, this jacket does not breathe as advertised. It's a bummer to be wet and clammy under this. Oh well, to stay dry I'll have to haul a few extra ounces and carry a shell that does breathe.

Go Lite- stick to backpacks, please

By:

I tested this Windshirt in two place.

First, I took it out to New Mexico's Lincoln National Forest, just as the monsoon season rolled in. It was a good addition to my pack, due to its TINY packability, when rain and hail was spotty. As long as I kept moving, as ultralight hikers do, this Go Lite product kept me fairly warm and dry. I am not sure I'd use it in continuous rain without a backup.

Second, I used this product extensively in my workplace, San Clemente Island, a cholla covered rock off the coast of San Diego. Works great in the continuous moisture of the marine layer. Makes a great option to taking out my traditional raingear, the Marmot Precip or the Marmot DriClimb.

Pros: Weight (obviously), compactability.

Cons: Waist elastic is annoying and it rides up when wearing a pack. This compromises total wind protection. Its seemingly flimsy construction. I am worried about cactus snags. Could use at least one front pocket for energy treats. Price is a little steep for how much product is received.

Verdict: This product is for specialized needs. I feel that the best way to utilize the wind shirt would be as a fall-winter base layer, in combination with a fleece. Runs small, order a size larger than usual.

Happy hiking!

Great emergency shell

By:
December 21, 2004

I use the Ether as my emergency shell. I pack it on mtn bike rides, snowshoe adventures, and even when I go golfing. In Colorado the weather changes all the time and I can't take all my rain gear but I need protection incase rain/wind become an issue on my outing. The fabric does a good job of keeping the water out but not in a full downpour. It isnt' waterproof but is very water resistant so be careful how you plan to use it. It is also a great extra layer to have when doing summits or day hikes that take you to areas that might become exposed b/c it blocks the wind. At only 3.5 oz it is a must have. I have a second one that I keep in my golf bag with GoLite Reed pants as my emerg wear. 8.5 oz total, simply amazing and worth every penny.

Don't leave home without it

By:

The windshirt always heads out the door either on my back, or in my pack. Now that the weather is turning colder (at least here in Colorado) I am wearing it out the door even more. It has been the perfect early morning running-wear over the top of a long sleeve base layer top. Can't beat the functionality-weight quotient.
