Description

XAAAAAARRRRR. Best helmet name ever.

It's not that road helmets are substantially less durable than helmets made for mountain biking, it's just that the three-way balance between ventilation, weight, and durability is readjusted for off-road purposes. The Giro Xar Helmet gets the same expert engineering found in the top-line road helmets. That means the same In-Mold process that make Giro road helmets some of the strongest and lightest on the market is also used for the Xar. The In-Mold construction process fuses the outer shell to the EPS foam liner. This process enhances the effectiveness of both parts. In fact, the fusion process actually reinforces those formerly vulnerable spots around the vents and ribs. It makes them lighter, more durable, and better ventilated than helmets with shells that are glued to the liner.

Where the Xar differs slightly from the road helmets is in the focus placed on the ventilation. With 17 Wind Tunnel vents and internal channeling, Giro has hardly skimped on ventilation, it's just that by reducing the number and size of the vents, slightly more emphasis has been put on durability. You'll also have the benefit of the P.O.V. visor to deflect the sun, rain, and twigs. The visor has a patented internal clutch system that allows for 15 degrees of vertical adjustment without the need for any tools; just give it a quick whack with your hand. And if you'd rather not have it on at all, you can easily remove it without tools.

Giro's development of the Roc Loc 5 Fit System makes it possible micro-adjust your helmet on the fly, with just one hand. Though other helmet manufacturers have similar adjustability options, none of them even come close to the weight savings that the Roc Loc system offers: it is almost 40% lighter than comparable systems.

The Giro Xar Helmet comes in Small, Medium and Large. It is available in Matte Black/Grey Bars, Matte White/Grey Bars and Black/Cyan/Lime.

  • RocLoc 5 provides a comfortable fit with unrivaled adjustability (easily adjust vertical and horizontal positioning), stability, and weight savings
  • Seventeen wind tunnel vents provide internal channeling to keep your dome cool
  • In-mold construction fuses a durable polycarbonate outer with the helmet's impact-absorbing foam liner to provide better ventilation in a lighter package
  • POV visor offers 15 degrees of adjustability

This is my first high end helmet so I may be biased... but its a great helmet! It moves a lot of air so I dont really sweat, I bonked my head on a tree and it didnt even dent and everyone sees me and my bright yellow helmet.

One of the best All Mountain helmets I have ever owned.
Great fit and feel. Very light with extra coverage for MTB.
The Neon is great for my commutes too!

This is my second Giro helmet for mountain biking. It fits great (minimal movement while on), and keeps my head cool. The "RocLoc"makes adjustment super easy, and the visor stays in place. Highly recommend this helmet, and am a big fan of Giro gear.

Bought my Xar helmet in exchange for a 661 helmet that I had previously purchased and didn't like. This helmet is one of the most comfortable helmets I have ever owned. I would highly recommend this helmet to anyone looking for a helmet that is really comfortable and a great fit.

I can echo the first review. Great fit, love the adjust system. Better than the Zen for fit. The visor is an issue, too small. The chins straps are stiff. It also protected my head from the contact it had with a big rock.

I believe the Xar replaced the Xen in Giro's helmet line...? I had 2 Xens that were perfect for me, size medium. The last one cracked after a fall straight to the head so I had to replace it and went with the Xar thinking it was pretty much the same.

It seems to be comparable everywhere except the visor. The fit is great, the straps work the same, and the adjustable fit works slightly different, but just as simple and fits great. The visor is the big disappointment for me. I often ride at, or near, sunset and very much appreciated the visor on the Xen to keep the blinding sun out of my eyes. Sadly, the Xar visor doesn't do much. I have to stare down at my front wheel now to keep the sun out of my eyes. It seemed especially treacherous riding a new trail at sunset where I was not familiar with the terrain and not able to see where I was going. Wishing I had the old Xen visor.

On a good note, I do send out MANY BIG THANK YOUS to Giro for saving my brain while wearing the Xen helmet. After an over-the-bars straight-to-my-head kind of fall, I ended up with some very serious whiplash in my neck (confirmed via x-ray) and the most excruciating muscle spasms I have ever had the misfortune to experience (instant-tears when they happened), BUT, not one bit of brain trauma, zero signs of concussion, and just a small bruise/sore spot on the top of my head. The foam cracked all the way through in two spots, partially in another, and was just held together by the shell. Saved my dome for sure!

I tried on the Giro Hex and the POC Trabec and fidled with the adjustments and they did not feel right. The Giro Hex... no matter how much I fiddled with it I could not get the straps to work right with my head and feel balanced. Plus... that helmet looked like it was a hat... totally sat high on my head.

The POC looked goooooofy and I could not get over the looks when I put it on. Plus for my head the sizing was very strange. I fit a Medium in a Giro and did the M/L in the POC and while the fit seemed "OK" but my head did not fill out the helmet shape I felt the way it should.

I put on the XAR and BAM! I knew it was the one after about 10 seconds of adjustment fiddling and confirming the fit in the mirror. It has a fantastic fit... great chin strap adjustments and the RocLoc5 is flawless. The venting is great AND it has the X-Static pads in the helmet to delay the onset of helmet funk.

Get this helmet and be happy... dont worry about the 129.00 bucks... turn that green into a bucket for your head that you will love for years.

XAR wins.

Bought this for my 10 year old, after a move left her helmet missing and she decided it was time for adult sizes. Subsequently found her prior helmet, so there is a pecking order with my wife getting first dibs on the XAR for family rides, with my daughter getting it if my wife is not riding. This level of debate, over a piece of cycling gear, is a fair representation of how desirable this helmet is.

The Evolution was the first ultra sick MTB helmet by GIRO back in the late 90's for $130. The E2 replaced the Evolution. Then they started doing the XEN series and the E2 was replaced by the super Euro looking XC lid the Athlon. The XAR is if the E2 and the XEN had a baby, but better cuz the ROC LOK 5 is the best ever. Giro took a page from Bell's book with this one! @$64 I got mine for bro-deal pricing! STOKED. Chainlove and Hucknroll kicks ass!

So light and breathable, easily adjustable--it makes wearing a helmet an absolute pleasure. I get so stoked when I put it on to go for a ride! And then I don't even give it another thought, because I don't notice it the entire time I'm riding, the way a helmet should be.

Very comfortable, light weight, and great adjustability. Sits close to my head and provides excellent coverage while still remaining cool and breathable. Everything a helmet should be!
