Good cyclocross shoe, but some issues

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is a comfortable pair of shoes and I have used them extensively (35+ races) for the past two seasons in Cyclocross. I got the high volume version in a half size larger than what I wear in Sidi and the length is good, although there is a lot of volume there, even with my Superfeet inserts. I have to crank the ratchet all the way down to get a snug fit across my ankle. The shoes are comfortable for running and pedaling and with the addition of a shoe shield between the sole and the cleat, I have no problems clicking in with my Crank Bros. pedals. My major gripe is that the mesh on the top of the shoe near the toe leather has started to rip. I had a pair of Shimano MTB shoes for over a decade before this and had no mesh tears. Also, the ratchet on both shoes is starting to give me problems, so it may be wearing out.

Currently riding in running shoes on...

Currently riding in running shoes on platforms. Hate it. Want to go clipless. Need to find shoes that fit. Running shoe size is 14 EEEE. Would like to try Giro Pvt HV but need them in a 49. Might possibly make a 48 work if toe box is big enough. Can you help?

Bigger, but not wider

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I purchased these after trying to fit into a pair of the standard size Privateer. The fit of the standard privateer was almost perfect, especially in the heel cup. The only reason that I couldn't wear them was because they were too narrow in the forefoot.
I expect the HV version to be wider, but they were not. There was more volume, but not width. I could tell this via fit and I compared the insoles from this and the standard version. They were identical.

Will work but thinking of others

The good: Breathe well, ratchet works well and adjustments in ride are easy. I have had no trouble climbing/descending in dirt/mud and have not installed any toe spikes.
The bad: The sole compound could be a little more rubbery for walking on rack. It also seems to wear quickly or scrape easily on concrete. I can not comfortably wear socks in them. I would recommend ordering a half size or more bigger. The stock foam insert is worthless as well. No support and might as well be no cushioning. I put an old Spenco hiking insert in and wear them barefoot. This seems to work good for now (the summer). Once we get some cool weather I will have to rethink this.
Conclusion: Good overall design but for a HV (wide) shoe the fit is tight and not cushioning or supportive enough.

Comfortable, great value for the money

They're not particularly stiff compared to carbon-soled shoes, but to me that makes them a great trail shoe. Construction seems solid and the placement of the middle d-ring over the middle of the foot provides a fit that doesn't pinch. The regular version fits narrow, so I ordered these. Size 12 dress shoe and the 47 fits perfect.
