    A no-brainer.

When 5pm hits, break out of the office and head for your favorite stretch of tree-lined singletrack to shed the stress of the day and breathe some fresh air. Whether your plans include hitting the dirt jump course with your ride crew and a few cold ones or you've got fast, rowdy trail riding in mind, wear Giro's Montaro MIPS Helmet to stay cool and comfortable while you ride while knowing your gray matter will be protected when you take a good spill.

The Montaro's biggest feature to get excited about is its use of MIPS technology. MIPS, or Multi Directional Impact Protection System, refers to a thin, flexible inner basket designed to rotate slightly to absorb energy during damaging side impacts. In addition to MIPS, the Montaro has a deep shape with extended coverage along the lower part of the head, and a reliable In-Mold construction to handle more standard bumps and tumbles. If you decide to slack out your frame and head for the lifts, the helmet's P.O.V. Plus visor easily integrates with goggles, and the breakaway camera mount gives you a chance to take footage of your biggest sends. Before you ride, you'll be able to get just the right fit quickly with Giro's Roc Loc Air fit system, which works with the Montaro's 16 vents and plush padding to keep air moving and sweat away from your eyes.

    Best in a long time

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've had the Montaro for pretty much the entire season and it's definitely the best helmet I've had in awhile. It fits well, the visor is very secure, and I never think about it while I'm riding. The only issue I've had is some wear on the fit pads.

    Solid Features, Fit Off

I picked this up after I crashed my last helmet (a Giro Hex) and liked that it had additional MIPS feature to it. I've worn Giro for my last 4-5 helmets or so, but on mountain and road, but was surprised to find that this helmet squeezed my temples in just the right spot so that i couldnt wear it for more than 1 minute. Slightly surprising considering how well i've fit into other Giro helmets.

      Falling apart

I bought this helmet a few months ago and the inner liner is pealing apart and now the side screw to the visor is stripped out. I have only used it about 10 times and this is what's happening. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.it fits good but the helmet is falling apart on me

Pads not good, fit is hit and miss

i've worn this helmet a few times and the padding is already coming apart. It is similar to a previous review on here where the padding is shown to be splitting, not sure what is up with this. I've had the giro feature before this and there was no problems.

Also, the mips on this helmet is mounted with a couple fasteners under the padding right where the temples are, leading to bad headaches mid ride. It could just be my head shape but this helmet isnt for me.

          Great helmet

          • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I just got my new helmet. It has been a long time coming but I am stoked on this new lid. It is incredibly breathable and it is super comfortable. I will try to update the review once I put it through the ringer.

          Wife's helmet

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I got this helmet for my wife. Both of us are new to mountainbiking and she hates helmets with a passion (why? don't ask me! They look stupid she said, prior to owning this one)
She is wearing a helmet. Thank you Jesus! Apparently this helmet is fine to wear. It was a battle but we did decide to order a helmet and she happily wears this one, without feeling stupid. She says it has nice circulation, it fits like a glove and makes her feel safe. She loves the helmet. Can not confirm any of the other complaints at this point. So far the helmet is definitely a great purchase!

          bells and whistles

Love all the features about this helmet. the visor easily comes up and down if you want to wear goggles. and the fine tune adjustment is secure and snug. breathes well on the ups and doesnt just pour sweat down over the face.

            major failure with padding

            • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
            • Fit: True to size

Ok, I'm now on my second warranty replacement helmet, and again the padding inside has began to come apart after only the first ride. Sure it does a great job of soaking up sweat, however it seems to swell to a point that it falls apart. I do like the helmet and will try 1 more time before switching brands. Hope it is just a bad product run but definitely unacceptable, maybe third time will be a charm.

            major failure with padding

            Well-designed helmet

            • Familiarity: I've used it several times

In my opinion, it's the best bang for your buck in high end helmets. I've been riding in Alabama where the heat and humidity really put the ventilation to the test and it has far exceeded my expectations. I would generally take my old Giro Hex off 2 or 3 times per ride just to dump some heat and wipe the sweat, but I haven't even thought about taking this thing off on the three rides I've worn it. Gaps in the foam between the vents on the interior of the helmet seem to keep the air flowing and the absorbent forehead pad keeps the sweat off my glasses.
My only nitpick is more of a production flaw than a design issue. The right-hand side visor mount is angled a little bit higher than the one on the left-hand side, so that when both sides are in their lowest setting, the visor looks a little wonky. It will level out if you take the left side up a notch, but for the money it would be nice to keep the visor low without looking like I went otb at some point during the ride. Not a huge deal, but at some point I'll probably try to Dremel out another hole to make it level out.

            Well-designed helmet

Nice helmet - poor service from Giro

            • Familiarity: I've used it several times
            • Fit: True to size

I've been waiting for Giro to launch a worthy successor to the Xen and this is finally it. The helmet looks fantastic, ventilates very nicely and provides nice coverage. I haven't yet had to put it to the ultimate test though I'm confident that the solid build and MIPS will help nicely.

The straps are thicker and heavier than most Giro straps but for me this keeps them away from my face and lends a solid feel to the helmet. Overall build quality is up with the best on the market too.

The only nitpick I have is that the GoPro mount is very sloppy so it is pretty much useless. The mount has a swivel to it that has about 1mm of play which makes my GoPro or light shake around which makes the mount totally useless. Update Nov 24: Giro somehow cannot replace the mount with another one after sending me one from a ski helmet that won't fit. Poor customer service so far and now they won't return any e-mails about getting me this $2 part. Luckily Comp Cyclist allowed me to return the helmet. This was not the ideal situation because I just wanted the camera/light mount to work.

KBogey - I just got an updated mount from Giro last week that is much, much better than the previous version originally shipped with the helmet. It feels much more secure, and does not have the side to side movement that my previous mount had. If you decide to try the helmet again at some point, be aware that this issue has been addressed.

Thanks for the update Kevin. I'd still wearing the Montaro if Giro hadn't denied that there was a problem then sent me the wrong mount when they clearly knew there was an issue.
I bought a Smith Forefront MIPS from you guys as a replacement and couldn't be happier. Everything is spot on with it!

            It's all in the details

            • Familiarity: I've used it several times
            • Fit: True to size

Even before putting on the new Montaro helmet I could tell Giro took their time to get this helmet dialed. It was great to see a bit of a departure from the standard new color options and zero new features. Of course it still carries typical traits of Giro helmets in that the helmet is lightweight, has a great fit, and a sleek, quality feel.

The biggest trait of the Montaro that I am most excited about is the MIPS liner to add some additional safety for your noggin in case you take a fall. At first I was concerned that the liner may provide some ventilation limitations, however I was pleasantly surprised at how well this helmet was able to dump heat on grueling climbs, despite the MIPS liner.

Several other features stood out on the helmet that I wasn't expecting to get my attention. First, the hydrophilic padding soaks up a ton of sweat like a Shamwow, and feels like a pillow. Secondly, the visor has a few indentations to make visor adjustment simple and easy to do while riding if needed. These indents, along with the rubberized grippers, make using the Montaro with goggles feel like a match made in heaven. Lastly, the removable Go Pro mount that clips into the top vent of the helmet took me by surprise. It was the first mount that actually made me want to use my Go Pro since the setup was so simple and easy to clip on and off. However, I was disappointed with how easy the breakaway function was and would suggest using a short leash so you don't lose yours on the trail. Hopefully this will be addressed by Giro.

All in all, I was really impressed with the comfort, protection, and plethora of subtle features the Montaro provides while being lightweight.

            It's all in the details
