Description

Keep your sphere intact.

How much do we love the Giro Atmos Helmet? So much that it has been a permanent fixture in our cycling closets since it first appeared on the scene. Sure, we've flirted with some new, good-looking lids, but we always have come back to our true love.

The Atmos was the first helmet that ever looked amazing while also saving our lives. It had tons of air channels, was light, and was seriously durable back when most helmets looked awful and weighed heavily on the head. It still looks so cool, and works so well that it is the most popular helmet we've ever sold. The Atmos was so groundbreakingly good because it was the first helmet that made use of the In-Mold Composite reinforcement. Through the use of the In-Mold construction process, the outer shell has been permanently fused to the impact absorbing EPS foam liner. This process enhances the effectiveness of both parts. In fact, the fusion process actually reinforces those formerly vulnerable spots around the vents and ribs. It results in a lighter, more durable, and better-ventilated helmet. The Roll Cage internal reinforcement gives the added protection that you'll be glad to have next time someone takes you down in the final corner of a criterium.

The amazing comfort that the Atmos offers has been one of the main reasons for its longevity. Giro has taken over 20 years of helmet design to establish their proprietary Super Fit Engineering. What that means is that they have created the helmet in three sizes based on 'human scale factors' data that they have amassed throughout their history of hand crafting helmets. The helmets are intended to fit snugly and securely while still accommodating the vast majority of head sizes.

Giro's development of their Roc Loc 5 Fit System makes those micro-adjustments possible. With the Roc Loc system, you can custom tune the fit tension as well as the fore-aft tilt of the helmet in seconds with one hand. Though other helmet manufacturers have similar adjustability options, none of them even come close to the weight savings that the Roc Loc system offers: it's almost 40% lighter than comparable systems.

Keeping your head cool during even the hottest, most critical road races is something Giro has focused a lot of attention on. Their helmets are developed with their proprietary Wind Tunnel Ventilation System. It is an elaborate design that combines 26 vents in the shell with exhaust channels within the belly of the helmet leading to the rear. The effect is that the fresh, cool air from the front is strategically channeled around the head to help evaporate the sweat, then out the rear exhaust openings. It's a natural cooling system that you will appreciate every ride.

The Giro Atmos Helmet comes equipped with its X-Static padding. Color options are: Black/Titanium, Red/Silver, and White/Silver. Sizes are: Small, Medium, and Large.

Very Nice Helmet

I used the Atmos for over three years and had no problems with it. For me, the Giro helmets just fit my head. I wear a their Medium. Head circumference is 22.75 inches around just on the edge of their recommendation. Very comfortable but not added features with Giro. Some of the Italian made helmets have nicer straps and helmet cases that come with them but do not fit as well.

One of the best helmets on the market

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I think it's one of the best dollar/gram value on the market. Light weight, low profile...and now with the new roc-loc retention system...very cool!

SAVED MY HEAD!!

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Had a bad crash a few days ago. The foam broke in 4 places BUT thanks to the kevlar reinforcement, the helmet held together and all I got was a mild concussion. Doctor said I was fortunate to have a good helmet and good not agree more. A new one is on order. My wife and I thank the designers of this brain bucket.

Great fit - comfy, well ventilated, and doesn't make your head look like "an orange on a toothpick".

Giro does it again and again and again

This helmet kicks ass. I love the way Giro fits and this is the second Atmos I've owned. Very light, well ventilated and comfy.

Atmos Rocks

I bought one for myself and then I later upgraded my wife to one. This helmet is lightweight and breathable. The adjustable fit works well and the chin strap is comfy. Better yet the helmet doesn't make your profile look Cro-Magnon.

Comfortable, Stylish, and Cool

Great lid with some excellent features.

First off, this thing keeps your head well ventilated, a much appreciated feature on hot Utah days. The fit is very adjustable with the retention system being easy to configure on the fly. The whole thing is light to boot.

I haven't had to test this helmet's crash protection, I hope I never have to, but you need only read the reviews on this page to see that rider's owe their lives to the Atmos. That's good enough for me.

Giro Atmos saved my life.

I have had my Giro Atmos since the beginning of this season. Earlier this week I was out on a solo training ride, 2 blocks from home I was in a head on collision hit and run. I shattered the sorry persons windshield cracked my helmet and only got 2 stitches to my forehead. I am very thankful for this helmet and will be ordering another soon.

Lifesaver

Like other reviewers, this helmet was responsible for saving my friend's life. On a ride this January he endured a high speed crash and was unconscious for about 45 minutes. Although he sustained broken ribs and a fractured pelvis, his concussion was relatively mild thanks to this Giro helmet. So, now that he is pieced back together and ready to ride again my gift to him is his lifesaving helmet.

giro atmos

This helmet saved my life, no question I would be dead. This is direct impact with the road at 52 mph, coming down the fastest section of Independence Pass in Aspen (no joke; witnesses saw me hit directly on my right-side forehead in the first bounce). Comparing the damaged side with the other clean side, the foam compressed about 60-70% before the entire shell failed. I've been wearing Giro helmets for at least 15 years and am now shopping for a new one. My take on the 3 Giro's: it's worth mentioning that the Aeon is substantially thicker at the front and a bit thicker at the forehead sides, so I assume it would take even MORE compression before it would collapse. Looks larger and a little more mushroom head effect because of the added material - but its also a bit lighter. The Prolight is sized very differently; a medium Prolight fits tighter than a SMALL in any of their other models. All of them are great, but for me I'm getting another Atmos because it has much better venting than a Prolight and is noticeably smaller, more compact profile than the new Aeon.

Between Atmos, Ionos & Aeon.. which helmet is the coolest.. most vents and lightest?

Responded on

Aeon by a mile. Huge external vents as well as deep wind tunnel vents internally, and a svelte 220 grams.

Life saver

My Atmos gave it's life to save mine.
Situation- Work out with team. One guy took off...I stood to chase. Chain slipped and I went over the bars @ 40kmh. Augered into the pavement headfirst.
Result- Knocked out. Grade 2+/3 concussion. Road rash. No memory of crash...lost nearly two full days of memory...serious cognitive issues for a full week.
Damage- The rear of the helmet was completely smashed. The body of the helmet had more than a dozen cracks. So much energy was dissipated that there were two cracks in the front, right above my eyes.
Yeah...yeah...yeah...I know most good helmets would have done the same job, but I don't care. Giro will be on my head until I quit riding, and/or get lowered into the cold ground.
TBI is no joke...wear your hard hat!
As for a review...
The Atmos fits well, is easily adjustable, and ready to go out of the box. It isn't the the lightest, or the latest offering from Giro, but the benefits negate these issues. It also doesn't look like a pasta strainer on your head, like the Ionos.

Comparing this to the prolight, how much does an atmos weigh?
Other than cost, what is the downside of the prolight (protection?)

Responded on

Believe the atmos weighs around 346grams. The pro light weighs around 200grams. The pro light has the same amount of protection as the atmos.
