Description

High-tech and oh-so comfortable.

The FormaRed Carbon Women's Tights are Giordana's top-tier cold-weather tights for women, and they certainly act the part. With a mix of high-tech materials and conscientious design elements, they offer exceptional warmth, sweat management, protection from foul weather, and a body-contouring fit that ensures you will remain comfortable in the saddle for long miles, even as the chilly weather seeks to disrupt your pursuit of attaining a personal best, or of becoming the best.

Giordana used three types of its Super Roubaix fabric to construct the FormaRed tights: Super Roubaix, Super Roubaix-Carbon, and Super Roubaix Acqua Zero. The panels covering the quads consist of Super Roubaix fabric: a stretchy, muscle-compressing fabric that's smooth on the outside and brushed on the inside for insulation against the cold (note that all three types of Super Roubaix have these properties.) The seat panel has Super Roubaix Acqua Zero fabric, which is Super Roubaix with a permanent, infused treatment that increases water repellency and keeps the fabric from becoming waterlogged, which would lessen its ability to insulate. Thus, you are protected from road spray kicked up when the ground is wet or it's raining. Super Roubaix-Carbon covers the knees and calves. The inclusion of carbon filaments in this fabric controls the amount of stretch and ensures that your muscles and joints are being properly supported.

Inside the FormaRed tights, you'll find Giordana's top-of-the-line, women's specific Cirro-W O.F. chamois. This seamless, single-piece insert has foam padding of varying thicknesses and densities to ensure comfort while minimizing bulk. It's elastic, so it moves and stretches with you as you ride, and then returns to its original shape when you're done. The outer layer of the pad uses a special Nylon microfiber that incorporates aloe vera for its protective and hygienic properties. This aloe vera treatment is permanent.

The FormaRed Carbon tights are designed to fit best when you're on the bike; as such, they were constructed on a curve to support a woman's natural riding position. The tights are secured at the waist by soft elastic and an internal drawstring, and at the ankles by silicone grippers. Additionally, the ankle cuffs have locking zips for an adjustable fit. Highly visible reflective accents provide safety when riding in low-light conditions.

The Giordana FormaRed Carbon Women's Tights come in sizes X-Small through X-Large and in Black.

the big debate

These are nice tights and I'm having trouble deciding whether or not to keep them. I want something that will motivate me to go out for a ride when it's cold (40 degrees or thereabouts) and from that standpoint they fit the bill. The lycra is thick and seems like it would even stand up to some trail riding (another one of my winter goals) so these are good from that standpoint. My concerns are that they seem to run a little larger than the other tights I'm used to (Castelli, Assos) and so I'm a bit worried that they might be too loose. They may also be a little too warm for me. I am generally comfortable in the winter in the much lighter Assos with their excellent wind block material. The material in these tights is reminiscent of the Assos material but thicker and less supple. So...the debate continues. If I keep them, I will provide additional feedback once I've put them to the test. I love the reflective material on the ankle zippers!

Comfortable and well made

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These are warm in the 40s with brisk winds and no sun. I'd try them for colder temps, but haven't found warm enough gloves to do so. The attention to detail is great. I've worn them on 40-70 mile rides with pretty much no chamois discomfort (that's a minor miracle!). I've tried the Nimbo chamois in the other Giordana lines, but it hits a hot spot. I'm 5'4", 120 lbs, bigger on the bottom than the top and wear a size S in these.

Leg Grippers that DO

Leg Grippers that DO

No hiking up the leg here (inside out shot). Easy on/off.
Very cozy.

Draw String Waist

Draw String Waist

You'll either love, or maybe not, the cut of the waist band...if you have any bit of a belly (still) the waist tends to slip down as you ride, but this draw string helps remedy that.

Snug and Cozy Interior!

Snug and Cozy Interior!

You can see (not the best camera) how articulated these tights are, for optimum on-board fit.

Totally comfy, cozy warm.

(never mind the door, my home is well over the century mark, fixing it up is a work in process...where's the time!)

Winter Riding's a Cinch wt. Giordana!

Winter Riding's a Cinch wt. Giordana!

Perfect into the 30's with proper base layers. Add arm warmers if necessary. I add Gore's ALP-X GT2.0 jacket, and overpants for really nasty/sloppy weather; but this 'kit' is usually all that is needed.

Get it while you can!

Perfect winter tights, with a perfect fit; not just a heavy pair of leggings...they are actually contoured to fit, especially articulated by the knees.
Also, Giordana's *Windtex panels are both extremely functional, ...the whole effect looks great (co-ordinate with the F.R.C. Jacket)!

Great cold weather cycling tight

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

These tights are great - warm and comfie. Fit is European - true to chart size, so best to look at the size chart before you order. Chamois more substantial than the FR-carbon shorts but not too bulky - good for longer rides. Carbon at knees great for movement and support. My favorite cold weather tights to date.

*UP-DATE*:

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small

The pair I received had stitching missing at waitband; could try to sew, but why, at this price-point. So back they go. *The new pair was is fine condition*. Will say they fit great, except that the waist-line is lower than most...sits almost like a pair of 7's or J brand skinnys, but not so comfortable/practicle for cycling; the waist band also somewhat narrow, compared to some other brands. Nice material and attention to detail (with the exception of sewing!). Chamois very comfortable, good coverage. The side panels match the FR-Carbon jacket perfectly...VERY, VERY SHARP. * Used these recently on a long & very cold/windy ride: Kept me warm the whole ride! My only complaint is the waist band...had to keep pulling it back up! Waist band should have been made wider in my oppinion, also, make sure to have a LONG bike jersey on (as most are, I'm sure), because these ride low...* Four starts for these two reasons.
