Gerber Sportsman's Wood Saw - 2008 BCS

That's what this saw was made for, and that's what it does exceptionally well. It stays sharp, packs small, weighs little, and goes through wood. The way the teeth are designed is nice because it allows more wood to be removed with each cut and also keeps the blade shorter and therefore lighter.

I got this saw for a multi-day kayaking/backpacking trip and it worked wonderfully. I compared it to some more expensive, folding-style saws and came to the conclusion that for the price and light weight this one was as strong, if not stronger, that the competitors. It was useful for sawing dead wood up to the width of my forearm. Probably wouldn't be suitable for anything bigger than that, but that isn't its purpose. It also did a real nice job as a "bushwhacker" to clear some fairly thick weeds and brush out of my hammock area.

Would definitely buy again.

This is by far the best backpacking saw I've owned. Light and compact when retracted. When opened for use, the blade and handle are long enough to do some real work. The blade really cuts through wood. The handle is long enough so you can use both hands if needed on larger pieces of wood. Highly recommended for any type of backpacking trip.

I have the Fiskars in the same design and my hunch tells me Gerber is/was sourcing it from them. This is a nice little saw to carry. As a mountain biker, you constantly encounter head high branches that might poke out an eye or do other facial damage at high speed. This saw has seen a lot a duty and stays sharp. Makes quick work of branches up to around 4". Fits nicely in one of the two pump sleeves in my Osprey Raptor.
