The secret to the Garmin Vector Power Meter Pedals hides right in its name. A vector, according to our physics book, is a quantity that has both a direction and a magnitude. The Vector Pedals, in place of the strain gauges typical in power meters, utilize sensors that Garmin calls, "pedal pods." These pods are located within the pedal spindle, and measure both the direction and the magnitude of the deflection of the pedal spindle itself. As these force vectors are measured, the Vector Pedals translate the vectors into watts, and transmit them to your ANT+-compatible head unit.
The Garmin Vectors are obviously quite similar in design to Look’s KEO pedals. Far from an accident, Garmin designed the Vectors to be compatible with Look’s cleats for ease of transition and cleat replacement. The bodies of the pedals are a carbon fiber composite, while the spindles are CNC-machined stainless, and they spin on sealed cartridge bearings.
A couple compatibility notes: In order for the Garmin pedal pods to work with your crankset, the width of the arm needs to be 38mm or less, and the height of the arm (from the pedal insert) needs to be less than 15mm. The Vector Pedals are compatible with the Edge 500, 510, 800, 810, and the Garmin Forerunner 910XT.
