Love this Garmin

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I picked up the Oregon 500 because you can download Topos for free (Google it) but they may not be as accurate. Great GPS for geocaching, which means that this is accurate. I would recommend purchasing the Garmin NiMH batteries as you can go through batteries like nothing. The great thing is that the unit is designed so that you can charge it through a USB when plugged in. Awesome!

Only The Best!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Huge Garmin fan and love this piece to death! Have used it on many hikes and never gone wrong! Me and my hiking partner pair it with a paper map and it always helps out incredibly!!

what is the accuracy of this unit???

what is the accuracy of this unit???

Responded on

Me and my partner have never found it to be that off at all so I say it holds true to the 3 Meters!

Responded on

Its going to be close to 2-3M. I was in the thick bush with overhang (so no clear sky) and we found the geocache within 2 meters.

The BC's price is strange - Oregon 550T...

The BC's price is strange - Oregon 550T GPS on the Garmin's site runs at $499.99. What is the trick here? Has BC somehow upgraded the device?? Where does the indicated regular price of $599.95 come from?

Responded on

Backcountry will generally match the price, and in this case I'm certain they will. Just click the Chat Now (upper right) and tell them about the price discrepancy.

Beautiful, I take it while boating. Gives you time to next waypoint ect. Speed and much more and if you want you can capture a scene and return to it since your picture is positioned.

Awesome piece of equipment

The "T" comes pre-loaded with topo maps so you don't have to go out and buy any. Compact and light weight yet still easy to use and read in most light conditions. Batteries go a bit quicker than I'd like but I have a solar charger for that. Camera isn't the best at only 3.2 mp, but I used to map my hikes with my cell phone and take pics with it too, and the camera on that is only 3.2, so no changes there. The cool thing is it tags the photos with the location and on top of that it is now a multi-use piece of equipment so you don't have to carry a GPS and a camera. Finds satellites fast, comes with a caribiner to easily clip to the back of your pack. Looks to be built tough, but I haven't tested that yet, but looks really stout.
