With a crisp color screen, detailed base map, and 24MB of internal memory, the Garmin eTrex Venture HC GPS is an affordable and essential piece of backcountry gear for your next outing. Thanks to its high-sensitivity GPS receiver, the Venture HC maintains a signal even in deep canyons or under heavy tree cover. The included base map shows you lakes, rivers, cities, highways, and coastlines, and the included Trip & Waypoint Manager software lets you upload routes and waypoints. You can also upload more detailed area maps from Garmin’s line of MapSource products (sold separately).
Bottom Line: Start your adventure with the eTrex Venture HC.
Does this allow you to put in your starting point and guid you back to it when you have trekked as far into the woods as you are willing to go? I am very new and this will be my first gps device for hiking.

This little guy will never allow you to get lost. Has a very limited basemap, but for geocaching, camping, hiking or boating this is one of the best for the price. I always get a clear signal in trees, near building and inclimate weather. I recommend this to anyone looking for a compact accurate gps.
I'm a GPS virgin looking for a unit to guide me safely along the 111-mile Keys Paddling Trail. Would this Garmin serve me well or should I be looking in a higher price range?
I own 4 other Garmin devices and I can tell you, they make the absolute best GPS gear on the planet. I checked out a few other review sites and this is a fairly highly regarded. I also read that you should definitely update the firmware and maps from Garmin.
Bottom line, this unit is waterproof and will get you where you need to go. Sounds like a win to me. No need to spend more money in my opinion.
I am looking for a GPS which i can plug in lattitude and longitude coordinates and it provide directions to get there. Mostly for geocaching. Does this GPS have this feature?
