If you're a serious outdoor enthusiast or work in the outdoors, get your hands on the Garmin 60 Cx GPS Unit. This GPS lets you store 50 routes and 1,000 waypoints as well as load map data. The stored routes are reversible so you can trace your path in either direction. Install topo, marine, and street maps with pre-loaded microSD cards, or download maps from your computer onto the included 64MB card. The WAAS-enabled, high-sensitivity Garmin 60 Cx acquires a signal in a mere one second in fair weather, and finds your location even in heavy foliage or deep canyons. The color display is LED backlit for easy reading at night. Other features you'll appreciate are the built-in U.S. road maps for navigating highways, a trip computer that lets you determine your speed and distance, and built-in tables that let you know the best time to fish.

Bottom Line: The Garmin 60 Cx tracks you anywhere and brings you back with ease.

i recently bought this GPS. i'm looking for the best topo software out there for use backcountry skiing around the northeast (vermont, NH, Maine). the garmin software called "TOPO US 100k" for the US does not look that detailed (they have demo's from their website: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=28229&pvID=29597#coverageTab)

any other suggestions? will other vendor's topo software (ie. national geographoc) work on this product? thanks

Well I had this GPS, and it was stolen out of my truck along with a bunch of other gear (Doh!). I now have the new oregon 400t. I have been downloading free gps topo maps from gpsfiledepot.com. Check it out! I have the 100k topo maps on disc, but you can get the more detailed 24k topo maps from this site... for free.

Trusted My Life To It For a Year And a Half

I took one of these on an 18 month coastal sailing trip from Oregon to Columbia and back to Nicaragua. It was my primary navigation device and kept me afloat and on track through nasty weather and tricky stretches of sea.

I found Garmin nautical charts online and uploaded them to a microSD card. Quickly, easily and cheaply, I had good charts for the ENTIRE Pacific Ocean. The screen is big for the unit's size and the color display is a must for getting the most out of detailed charts. IT finds a signal quickly in all but the worst weather. In bad weather it takes a while but does find a signal. It even comes preloaded with a few little games for when you're too bored to stay awake but too exposed to sleep. I'll have a few of these or something similar on my next little sailboat.

This unit is compatible, though finding maps may be somewhat difficult. There may be third-party map solutions available, or you could be more adventurous and go with Garmin's WorldMap, which will give you some detail, at least enough to know your general location on the many available detailed maps of the area (there is definitely a topo map of the Ushuaia area, which is a good sign).

Sweet, lightweight, very accurate, waas enabled allows within 10 ft of location. The receiver is very accurate it works in Zion's canyons, Peru's Inca trail, Smoky MT, canopy cover in Florida, Mt Rainier, the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico dive trips all the same!! great bonus is very conservative with batteries.

For that, you need a "Spot Beacon" or something similar. http://www.findmespot.com/en/
The Spot beacon has a multitude of features from sending out SOS beacons to just giving your friends an update of your current location...
---note, there are also avalanche beacons, but they work completely different...

Great piece of equipment! easy to read display, and easy to use. The only draw draw-back: the compass doesn't work unless your moving....Other than that it works great, and I use it in the field for work and play, and is accurate to within 15 ft

I have a need to reload a track as a track - not waypoints. My plain Jane "eTrex" in conjuction with DeLorme Topo USA 3.0 doesn't have this capability. Does anyone know of a GPS unit with this capability? Thanks, Dougemail: LAfellow@aol.com

Can I get golf course info and add it on to this GPS unit? For example, there is a "SKYCADDIE" that is specific for golfing, but I was interested in both, not just golf courses.

In theory, maybe. You could map waypoints from your course into your GPS device and then, using those waypoints, etc., "navigate" your way around the golf course.Having said that, that wouldn't be a good use of your device or time and would only work AFTER you've played and mapped a course. The better solution is to use SkyCaddie or GolfLogix (http://www.golfgps.com/default.asp) -- the latter uses Garmin technology on board. I have a SkyCaddie device and like it a great deal but I've heard great things about GolfLogix too.
