Backpackers' Cache Bear Resistant Food Container

The Backpackers' Cache Bear Resistant Food Container keeps 6 days worth of food out of bears' grimy little paws. At 2.7 lbs., the Model 812 is Garcia Machine's lightest version yet, and is used by Kluane, Denali, Glacier Bay, and Yosemite National Parks. How it works: The lid is secured by two latches that can be opened/closed with a coin, key, thumb nail, etc. Leave the closed container a good distance from your sleeping area. If a bear finds it, do not risk provoking the bear by attempting to take the container away from the bear. These containers easily withstand a bear's pawing, chewing, and kicking. The bear will eventually lose interest and leave your cache of food alone.

Bottom Line: Good for you, good for the bears—keeps your food safe and discourages bears from raiding campsites.

This canister is a little heavy, but it is bomb proof. It makes a great seat also. It was tight on space for two people for 4 days, but we made it work.

That's always nice that it's bomb-proof. You could always use it for food storage or something, too.

Never mind the Autoflow comment. Wrong Sean, but just in case, now you'll know.

Hey Sean, you must've pulled this one out of the archives. Still the best can on the market. My 812 is still going strong, but my sticker collection is completely trashed by claw marks. BTW- I figured out the solution to backflushing the Autoflow. Have a look, and give it a whirl.

As of the summer of 2005, this was the bear canister of choice of the rangers I met in Yosemite & Sequoia/Kings Canyon. Even some of the competitor canisters have had their lids popped off by the wily bears. This thing is heavier than one would like, though.

Bear Resistant Food Container

The backpacker's cache works great.
With proper planning I was able to store food for 3 people on a 4 day, 3 night trip to the Rockies inside of one container.

BearVault containers

They work well and pack easy. We did not have any bears test our containers on this trip but the containers were much easier than hanging bags. We used both internal and external frame packs and the containers fit well. 3 people with 7 days food in 3 containers. The containers were handy for seats and water containers in camp before stashing food for the night. The translucent plastic allowed us to identify meals in the container without opening.

worth the weight

We now save time spent trying to toss a darn rock with a rope over a branch with this. We also have used them as a mini table to share our dinner, or a makeshift, but not ideal, seat if it is raining. Just a tip though, always put the lid side down to the ground, so rain doesn't get in as easily.

Bombproof but tricky to use

By:
January 21, 2005

Absolutely bombproof bear container I used in grizzly country in Alaska. Sporting goods stores proudly display nicked up samples that survived grizzly attacks. Negatives: tricky to use. Small opening and water does get in. Need a dime or a screwdriver (swiss army knife). If you are far away from resupply, this is the one to get.

Beary good

By:

On a trip to Yosemite we had packed the cache with food for three of us for three days. A mama bear and her cub just went by the cache and didn't even attempt to open it. We had hung up everything else that wouldn't fit in the bag. We were so proud of the "good" hang. Mama sent the cub up and they proceeded to devour while we watched helplessly.

Food Storage

By:

Easy to use.
The only short fall is that it's a little tight for four days food for two
men. We made it work.
They should consider making a larger one.
