    My new favs!

    • Familiarity:I've used it several times

I used Voile skins for 5 years and just couldn't get them to last. I'm really excited to make these my new go-to skins. So far they have worked out much better than Voile and come with tail clips! I have the high traction skins as well for trips in the Tetons.

    Engearment's G3 Splitboard Skins Review

We got our hands on next seasons (2015/2016) G3 Alpinist Splitboard Skins and tested it over the course of 2 weeks. G3 redid everything, new glue, new solvents, new tail connector, new tip connector, new carry bag (wallet actually) and overall - a better skin. We tested them head to head with the current G3 Alpinist, G3 High Traction, G3 Alpinist LT (covered in another review) and Black Diamond Ascension (for control group). Check out the full review @!

    G3 skins are terrible!!!

    • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I purchased these G3 Splitboard skins. Unfortunately, the glue
is wayyyyyy goopy - the glue comes off on EVERYTHING the skins touch (my pack, my gloves, etc.). And, when I pull my skins off my splitboard, there is an AWFUL GLUEY residue left on my board! (So, I have to clean and re-wax my board each time I use the skins. :(

I have tried everything, including ironing the skins to remove moisture from the glue, to no avail. I have several other pairs of skins (for my AT and telemark skis); never before have I experienced such weird glue.

What's worse is that BACKCOUNTRY.COM refuses to return or exchange the product, stating "G3 is not on the list for manufacturer warranties".

Stick to Black Diamond and SPARK skins!

    Hey Kelly,

I'm going to take care of you on this. FYI G3 makes Sparks skins so that is the exact same product. Also it looks like these were purchased in 2012 so that would be considered normal wear and tear, and the glue issue most likely is due to contaminates. However I have two pair of G3 skins from the same year and one is glooping everywhere and the other is good so it could be a bad batch of glue. Check your email and we can talk further.

    Nice skins

    • Familiarity:I've used it several times

Great skins. I was a little upset when I recieved them already cut and used . I was offered an exchange but a little disappointed with backcountry for sending out used skins and only offering a exchange of all the hassle.

    Dependable skin

    • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

I'd used this skin for three seasons on two a few different setups average about 60 days/year on them and haven't had to re-glue yet. Originally bought a short for my 156 hovey split and simply adjust the tail clip and give it a little stretch when I want to use them for my 161 carbon. I would recommend a medium for a 161 but if you already have a short they will work. The glide and traction on this skin is a really nice happy medium compared to the high traction g3's I also have. You get great traction even when taking a steeper up track and can cruise right down the small rollers or skate a bit with your stride. The negative I find with these skins is when you get onto an icy skin track there can be a lot of slipping. Ice is never a walk in the park though. The High tractions I have require a pretty decent slope to get any significant glide but can climb strait up anything you put in its path. Take care of these and they'll last you. I never use skin savers/pouches in the winter when touring but when the season comes to an end ill store them on the saver and in the original pouch in a cool place.

    Great skins!

    • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

    No-brainer for a splitboard.

Quick and easy to set up, and as long as you do it right they will stick all day!

I have used my friend's Viole splitboard skins a few times and I much prefer using these ones.

    Work Great

    • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

I'm on my second season with these skins and my DIY 161 split. On long or really wet days having the tail-clips really makes the difference. Even if the glue gets a little sloppy, these things will stay on the board where other skins will start flopping around. I will say that they slide a lot better than they grip. On steep or icy patches I really have to stomp down to get some traction. Looks like G3 answered those complaints though with a high friction model:

    No complaints

    • Familiarity:I've used it several times

Been happy with these so far, and they (as I would imagine most other) skins come in a nice little package with a carrying bag, cutting tool, and "Skin Savers" for storage during the long (and let's be honest, boring) summer months. Worked fine in the field so far as well, minimal ice build up, glide well, and provided enough traction on the slopes I was on.

Good Glide but just ok Grip

    • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

I found these skins to be just ok. They do glide the best out of any skins I have used but they are just ok at going up hill. I would recommend gecko skins if you want something that glides and climbs well. Plus they are much lighter.

    G3 split skins

    • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Well they are great skins just got back from my 1st split trip. Love these skins. but don't forget to get the glop stopper skin wax. so u don't get build up on the bottom of the skin. I love the noise they make sounds like a sound effect from star wars.

    THEY Work

Have not used any other skins on a board - but these excellent in my limited experience. They are easy to get set up, easy to put on, they stay on.
Boarded into an area that the snow was dificult to skin out of sidehilling due to a very hard crust. It was hard to get the crust under 6in of soft snow to break, and if you did not break it you would start to slide down - it was easier to go straight up the 27 degree slope - and the skins allowed us to go right up!

      perfect split skin!

used these on the lib trice split, 164.5 cm. used size medium skins. Had to do minimal trimming.

Glue is great in mix of temperatures. Used the skins in everything from a 15 degree morning with fresh pow (8") to warming later in the day encountering soft warm snow, crust, and ice. Skins literally went up anything. Very tough too- went right over rocks, pine needles and twigs sticking up in the snow. No damage to skins. Even went through parking lot mash potatoes with sand and salt. No damage- nothing stuck to skins!

In the field, the skins separate easily from the board and themselves. You don't need to do shoulder exercises to pull them apart- very easy. They glide well on flat sections and there is no slippage on steep sections.

Tip and tail connection is top notch and what splitboarders have been waiting for! Better than the Voile skins and they have a tail clip too! Cheaper than buying Voile skins and an aftermarket tail connector from Sparks R&D. The G3 skins also come with "cheat sheets". Great value for a complete set up requiring no modifications.

Overall- everything you need, zero modification to mount to splitboards, and tours great in mixed conditions! Perfect!

I have a 153 Burton Landlord. Would I be able to trim the long size skins and remount the tail clip? Or is it fixed?

Unfortunately the way these are designed you wouldn't be able to swap out the tail clip on them.

If you really wanted to go that route, you could get the Voile tail clip kit...

And cut the skins to length and then mount the voile tails to the G3 skins.... but that is kind of a messy process.

Shoot me an email if you've got questions!

Anyone know about the sizing for these? On G3's website they only have 2 length size short and long and they have different ranges. I have a 167cm split board and am not sure what size to get?

        Best Answer

Great question. This particular model is last seasons from when G3 produced 3 sizes of this product. For this year they changed their sizing up on everything and reduced it from 3 options to 2 options to make things easier.

Based on this board and you having a 167cm you'd want the Mediums for this sku but we unfortunately don't have more in stock.

Jones Solution 168, LRG or MED?

Hello, i have a 161.5 t rice libtech and I was wondering if the long (162-178) would fit
        thank you in advance

        Best Answer

        Hey JP,

I would avoid getting a skin that is almost too long. They can stretch out and become loose after a while. Better to get a shorter skin and use the adjustment straps to fit the board. Plus, this way, you don't have any unnecessary weight from the extra skin on your tip and tail (these areas don't provide much traction as they typically rise away from the snow). Hope that helps!

I have a 66 would I be able to make the long work for that without any trouble? Is it possible to trim the tail of the skin and re-set the tail clips without to much trouble? I'm guessing they are set with rivets?

        Hola Jacob,

These "pre-cut" (meaning pre-cut to length) G3 skins are not trimable as far as length goes. You can trim the edges of course, but the clips are mounted directly into the skin and you won't be able to reattach them. Definitely hold out for the proper size!

        Hey there,

Which size should i be getting for a jones hovercraft 160? I understand that short is 145 - 159 and medium 159 - 173, does that include the length of the tail clip as well or just the length of the skins?

For some reason the G3 skin's size break is on the most popular size split board. I have trimmed many pairs of these skins and with a 159-161 split board neither size is ideal. The small is impossibly hard to stretch onto the tail and the medium leaves you with a huge tail strap and thus no stretch adjustment. Your best option is the Voile Splitboard Skins with tail clips in a size medium with a range of 153-162. These skins have better traction, much better glue, and are more durable anyway.

Does this price ($135.96) include a pair of skins or just one? Also what length do you recommend for my 164cm jones solution?

        Hey Lee,

So this is definitely for a pair of skins.

For a 164cm Jones Solution, I'd get the Mediums as those are for splitboards 159-173cm in length.

just bought these skins this year (a christmas present from mother in law). Today, while skinning, one of the two tip clips snapped off. What is your warranty policy?

        Hey John,

We have a 30-day return policy on used items. But G3 will have a 1-year warranty on their products.

For warranty on this brand, you'd need to reach out to G3 directly.

Im splitting a salomon fast track 167. Is the medium size good for this one? Also, how much does the medium size weight for shipping? Thanks!

        Hey Simon Espnola,

        Thanks for your question.

For your 167cm board I would suggest the medium size in these splitboard skins. The weight is 340 g / 12.0 oz per skin. So 24 ounces for the pair plus the weight of packaging, the trimmer and bag.

        I hope this helps.

Anyone use on a 160cm split? Could medium be too big?

I've got a 161 with the mediums and they're fine, I can't imagine they'd be too big for a 160. You'll certainly have some extra on the tail clip (ie you have to use the shorter notches leaving more hanging off), but it hasn't bothered me and the clips both fit plenty tight.

Mediums will work fine on a 160 but you wont have much extra tail strap. By sizing down, you will lose about 14cm of skin, however if your board has any tail rocker, and most do, those last few cm's don't matter anyway... then its a game of weight not length and you'll be shaving an ounce or two.

Anyone have experience with both these and Voile's Tractor Skins? Curious in general, but specifically wondering if these are any more supple/easy to fold up compared to the Tractors. Also curious about the weight... Thanks in advance.

        Best Answer

I have had the tractors and a few other types. Although not having tail clips in most situations is okay, during multi-day adventures tail clips will save your life if you don't have a place to dry your skins thoroughly. The tail end of my tractors come unstuck and flop around.. not good.

The splitboard I am getting is 292mm (nose width), 252mm(waist width), and 290mm(tail width). Will the 140mm wide skins be alright?

        Best Answer

Yes. The 140mm refers to half the pair. I'm guessing that your 292mm width is the board in downhill mode and that a half pair is 146-126-146. You will need to trim the outside edge of the skin to match your boards sidecut. G3 includes an awesome trim tool with the skins.
