Glide and ride.

As a touring enthusiast, you want a skin that glides on the uphill and packs light on the downhill. Fortunately, so does the G3 Alpinist Climbing Skin. Backed by the tech necessary for an intuitive and highly functional piece of gear, the Alpinist cuts through snow and vertical like butter and paper, respectively.

  • Low-profile tip connector uses pivoting hands to fit securely on your ski tip and eliminate the extra weight and floppiness of fold-over designs
  • Laminated tail uses G3 tail connection system to reduce drag
  • Waterproofing treatment prevents clumping when you move through multiple climate zones
  • Temperature-tolerant adhesive remains sticky even when it gets cold
  • RipStrip makes it easy to pull off the ski and reduces skin-to-skin sticking
  • Includes nylon case, skin savers, and trim tool

G3 Alpinist Climbing Skin

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Wow, these skins work great in all snow conditions. I almost ordered to small of skin width wise. Make sure you order the same width or greater as the fattest part of the front of your skis and trim them to fit. It takes 5 min per ski to trim them up with the included tool.
They also came with a skin saver mat and a storage bag.

I have a pair of Fischer Watea skis that are 130 mm in the tip, 96 mm in the waist and 120 mm in the tail. Length is 170 mm. I assume the short size, but what width skins should I buy? Thanks

Responded on

Hey Pnop,

You could go with the 115mm or 130mm width. The 115mm width will be lighter, but have less coverage (which leads to less traction), whereas the 130mm will have better coverage, but a bit heavier.

Give me a call or shoot me an e-mail if you have any other questions!

These would be for a pair of Atomic Automatic 102's. Length 180 cm, 131-102-122. Which would be best fit?

In addition they would be used mostly to skin up groomed runs and the same runs ungroomed once area closes. Would you recommend these or High Traction's from G3? Any other brands?

Responded on

Get the 130mm long. You do not need the high traction version. They are really only for split boarders who have far less surface area on the snow than you will.

What would be the right size for an Armada TST that is 183cm in length 119-132-102-123? Thank you so much!

Responded on

130 mm Long would be the best size. You will not have to cut at all around the section of the ski that is 132 mm in width.

Not Quite

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought these for AT in the Wasatch and they are OK for ordinary use but:
(1) They don't re-adhere well when doing laps
(2) They slip backwards when climbing steepish slopes, while the BD ascensions and Pomoca Climb Pro Glide seem to have a steeper max angle with decent gliding.

Hi What size skin for Armada Magic J 180cm 138-143-126-140-134 20m?

Responded on

Hey Erik,
The 140mm width will fit the Mau J best. Both the medium and long lengths will fit the 180cm length. To save weight you could go with the medium, since those skis have so much tip and tail rocker.

What size skin for my Moment Governors? (186cm -142-116-128)

Responded on

Hey Jesse,

I'd recommend the Long length in a 130 width. Feel free to hit me up with any other questions!

What skin would you recommend for the Voile Vector? 170cm length, 118/94/107 ?

Responded on

Short: 162 - 172cm
For wall to wall coverage, the 115mm width would be best.

What size for Salomon; 180cm, 133,95,115mm
Dynastar; 172cm, 133, 97, 113mm

Responded on

For wall to wall coverage, you would want the 130mm width for either of those skis. But you could get away with the 115mm width to save weight and trim less material off.
Medium length will fit 171-181cm skis.

what size for icelantic nomad 171, 140-105-130?

Responded on

At 171cm, you're right on the line between the short and medium lengths, but I'd go opt for the Medium/140mm size because you'll get a tiny bit more uphill grip with the longer length.

Are these for skis only or can they be used on a splitboard? Which is the best size for a 159mm board (probably medium), but 130mm or 140mm length?

What is the right width for 166cm G3 ZenOxide 88 skis? I'm assuming that the correct length is short.

Responded on

I would get the 130mm, short. The G3 trim tool included will help you trim those down perfectly to shape.

Inferior to BD. Period.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Pros: - Thinner, lighter, more supple than BD
- More glide than BD nylon

Cons: - Serious issues with snow getting in between ski and glue on big days
- Less traction than BD nylon...similar to BD mix

G3 skins are a strange creature in the ski touring world. You can find tons of people using them and loving them, or meet people who've tried them once and won't touch them with a 10' pole ever again. Sure, they worked fine for a couple 500' laps on a nice day, but once I started really pushing them in inclement weather, the glue started to fail in the wet/snowy conditions. Grip is significantly inferior to BD nylon, to the point I was deviating from my friend's skin track. Sure, glide is better, like BD Mix.

Every middle-aged, super-experienced backcounty skier I know took one look at my G3 skins and went: "oh, bummer". That's just how it is, I guess. I never thought I'd return skins, but it had to be done. These just blew.

Unsatisfied customer

I bought the G3 climbing skins online for a smaller (80mm) ski. The skins came in a box with ski tip loop too large for an 80mm ski. When I inquired about the smaller loops, the G3 representative prompted replied that they have smaller loops, but you will have to pay $16 plus shipping. Not to mention the skins don't come with a ski bag or mesh for storing. Those will run you another $16 each. It's been a while since I bought skins, but I do remember that the Black Diamonds included the bag and mesh and would gladly have sent me the correct size ski tip loops without charge. Unfortunately, I cut the skins or they would be sent back.

My first pair of expedition skins came with a storage bag and skin savers. Just ordered same skins and to my surprise no bag and no savers. Disappointed and returned them. Didn't read what was included on BC website and assumed so you know what that means....disappointed anyway and returned them.
