As a touring enthusiast, you want a skin that glides on the uphill and packs light on the downhill. Fortunately, so does the G3 Alpinist Climbing Skin. Backed by the tech necessary for an intuitive and highly functional piece of gear, the Alpinist cuts through snow and vertical like butter and paper, respectively.
Low-profile tip connector uses pivoting hands to fit securely on your ski tip and eliminate the extra weight and floppiness of fold-over designs
Laminated tail uses G3 tail connection system to reduce drag
Waterproofing treatment prevents clumping when you move through multiple climate zones
Temperature-tolerant adhesive remains sticky even when it gets cold
RipStrip makes it easy to pull off the ski and reduces skin-to-skin sticking
I have a set of BC90n Backcountry skis 88 - 60 - 78 (189) and bought a pair of G3 Alpinist skins - 70 mm x long (180 - 190). I cannot figure out the fornt attachement as on these skis it doesn't catch and just slips through. Am I doing something wrong or are these skins not meant for these type of skis. Help. Thanks
These skins are meant for alpine skis which have the rounded tips that those clips would attach to and tension off of. The BC90 tip may be too narrow or not rounded enough to have the clips grab hold. You may have to move to another tip attachment plan like a tip loop or something of that nature.
awesome skin easy to use, cutting tool works AMAZING! used a handfull of times in white mountains of NH one day it was -10 glue held well! Buy the twin tip clip from G3 makes life easy. Great product!!!!
As the center of gear knowledge, Backcountry.com wants you to be as informed as possible when buying high-end gear, and we've compiled price listings from some other reputable retailers for you to compare. Although we take steps to confirm this information is accurate and updated, we assume no responsibility for the accuracy of the price and shipping information provided by other vendors.
Long is the right length. Width depends on the widest point on your Armadas. Get them within 10mm of the widest spot and trim to fit with the enclosed tool.
I've bought and used both the G3 Alpinist and Expedition skins and although I have not had the sliding problem noted by calebsflig2175651 (January 26, 2012), I do know someone who has. This leads me to believe it could be a defect in the individual skins. I have noticed that the G3 skins do not go as steep as the old BD Ascensions but they do hold very well on ice. Also, the glue seems to come off more quickly and the rubber tail piece that is welded into the skin (rather than riveted in) cannot be easily replaced if the rubber holes rip. The tail piece in the newer Alpinist model appears to be redesigned, so it may not be as problematic. As for working with G3, I also found them to not be so helpful and returning stuff to bc.com is easy but if you get it on Steep and Cheap, you only have 30 days to return a defective item.
After a rather awesome evening spent eating brownies and trimming these guys upon their delivery (using the included skin-trimmer, which is perfection in razor blade form), finally got a chance to actually get out on them recently. Gripped great on icy, slushy nastiness, as well as in the fresh pow pow that happened later. Glide is better than the BD Ascensions I've tried, stick is superb (at least in New England, where the snow is eternally sub-par).
The adjustable tip bracket thingies don't fit my skis perfectly, but once everything is in place, nothing budges.
I have 180 cm Fischer Big Stix 10.6. w/135 mm tip. Would it be better to get the medium or long skin? Either would likely work, but which would be the better fit?
They grip well on the way up and have decent glide. The glide isn't as good as a BD Ascension, but they seem to stick better. On the other hand, the pivoting tip connectors are a huge improvement over the usual wire loops on BD and some other G3 skins. Even in the stickiest Spring conditions, I've had no trouble with clumping. The waterproofing works well to prevent it. The skins pack easily and can be applied and removed quickly with no fuss.
All in all, a solid addition to the touring setup.
If you truly want good glide, get either a mohair/nylon mix or a pure mohair. Both G3 and BD make the mix. BD makes a pure mohair. Or you could go with one of the European companies that specialize in mohair, e.g. Pomoca or Coll-Tex.
Bought a DPS Wailer112RP 184cm and a DPS Yvette 112RP 168cm. Which (G3 Alpinist Climbing) skins do I need. 140 or 130mm in which size (medium, long?). Thanks!
I have the 130mm medium G3 Alpinist on my DPS Lotus 120 at 178cm long, and I've found this to be a perfect fit.
I would recommend getting the 130mm as you really only need edge to edge skin coverage in the middle of the ski, especially with the early rise tip and tail on your skis.
Both skis have a tip width of 141mm. I'd get the 140mm skin in a Long for the Wailer and a Short for the Yvette and cut the width to fit. G3 provides a great little tool to cut skins.
I took these out on my Line Opus and they worked great. They never slipped on the way up, and they glide beautifully on the flats, up hill, and even when hitting a small down hill section. They also glide better than the K2 skins. Trimming with the included trimmer is a cinch.
Great grip, amazing glide! I highly recommend these skins.
I've been using my Alpinist skins with a 195 Kuro for two and half seasons or roughly 100 times now. I've been impressed with their grip and the glue's durability, as I have not replaced the glue to date. The bonu? The Tip fitting. Kuro's are wide and flat in the tip and finding tip clip was tough until I found these.
Just bought a pair of G3 Highballs, they are 140/116/127, I'm thinking 140mm-Long would be the right pair. But I would like to know another persons opinion!
130mm would also work with less to trim and only missing 4-5mm for part of the tip. Can't say about the length without knowing which length you bought.
I've got some volkl chopsticks at dimensions 148/128/148 mm and they're 175 cm in length. Should I go with these skins and what length and size should I get. I think I would have to go with the 140 mm but my tip and tails are still wider.. will this result in a problem skinning up the mountain?
Taken these skins touring twice now and very happy with them. For starters, they are so easy to cut and set up, the tool that comes with is automatically offset, so no need to readjust and cut again. My blackdiamond skin friends were stealing my cutting tool because it was so easy to use. As for on snow performance I definitely felt I was slipping a lot less than my friends on tour with black diamond skiins of similar price point. Super happy with these! You will be too!
Eric, Your best bet is the G3 Alpinist Split Board Skin size medium (158-174cm). They are shaped to fit boards, not skis and have a better tail connection for boards. Backcountry.com was carrying them. Maybe they are temporarily out. In lieu of the split-board skins, get these in a short 130mm width and get the twin-tip tail attachment.
New G3 Alpinist Red Logo skins perform poorly skining up, and stretch out too quickly. Also, G3's customer service is not going to be of any help. Buyer beware. G3's product has despairingly lowered in quality compared to their old products, and other skins now available. First time out with the G3 I was slipping backwards at 30 or so degrees (could it be the long wide skinless section to make it easier to pull apart?). Also, from tip to tail the skin has stretched so easily that I have no room to tighten the tail - after one time out. If your back country experience will be no greater than skiing bunny slopes this skin might work. For those wanting a high performance skin you will not find it with this G3 product. Truly disappointed
I just brought a pair of G3 skins in December and love them. They work well in most conditions - better than my BD and Colltex skins that I have owned previously. I'm not sure what you mean by slipping - does the skin glue slip? Or the skin plush (i.e. the skins on the snow?) 30 deg is getting up there for skinning uphill- your personal technique is very important at this angle to maintain grade. You may want to go out with some expert b/c skiers and see what tactics they employ.
All skins stretch a little when wet, and also under the small amount of tension you place them under when pulling the tail strap tight. If yours once stretched are too long for your skis then you have purchased the wrong skin length - you want the size down from what you have.
Lastly, I've found G3 customer service super helpful and friendly. They do all their warranties in the US through their dealers, but this is apparently due to customs and shipping issues (G3 is a Canadian company). They answered a couple of my technical questions regarding my broken binding, and pointed me back to my dealer (bc.com) who then took great care of me.
I'm about to purchase Volkl Aura twin tip skis in 163cm 131/96/114mm. /Which Alpinist skins should I go for, xshort or short / 115mm or 130mm? Do I need twin tip connectors too? These will be my first skins, are they easy to cut and fit or should I be buying them from the ski retailer and asking him to fit them?
130mm short for best coverage. Twin-tip connectors really help keep the skin tail on the ski. They're worth every penny. The skins come with a cutting tool. Well-designed and easy to use. There is a good cutting video on G3s website (http://www.genuineguidegear.com/life/video/trimming-g3-alpinist-skins).
I have only used these skins 3 times now but am overall fairly impressed. The glide great and stick to the snow even better. I have had only one problem with them on a tour. The adhesive did not stick to the ski very well maybe due to temperature or snow already on the skin or ski. Otherwise the design is fantastic and fits my BD Verdicts great. The skin cutter is also super helpful
Best skins around when it comes to how they attach to the ski. I use the twin tip connector and never have to worry about them coming out of place, even on my skis with flat tails. And it's hard to beat the price when compared to other brands.
For width, you have a decision to make. You can get the 100mm width and slap them on without any cutting. You'll enjoy a slight weight savings. Or, you can get the 140mm width to cover the entire base. You'll have to cut them, but you'll have much better traction on the way up.
Haven't toured with these yet, damn snow hasn't come but just got them in and finished cutting them. They seem great so far but we'll see how they tour.
A++ for the cutting tool. No hassle and it gives you the automatic offset that you have to fidget all around with the traditional "envelope opener" that comes with BD skins.
I have the Line Cir Francis Bacons with marker griffon bindings and Im going to get the Alpine Trekker Binding Adapters, and I was wondering if I should get 115mm straight or 140mm and cut them
I have a pair of Armada TST's 183cm long, (119-132-102-123), do I pick a pair of 130mm? and which length?... from reading the other answers, sounds like long.... Thx
I realize everyone on here is asking about sizing, and unfortunately i am unsure about what size to order as well. I have SkiLogik Howitzer's 186's and 110 waist. Please advise on what size skin I should order. thanks!!
check out the G3 twin-tip connector kit--it's a little piece that hooks on to the tail strap and holds the skin on with two hooks (instead of just one) to keep your skins from coming off your tails. runs about $20, backcountry.com sells em!
I've got the 192cm Bent Chetler's and I'm wondering if I should go with the Xl or the long. I saw a question about 189's and how to go with the longs. Is the bent chetler long enough to justify the 3 extra centimeters?
130mm XS should work best. Your length is on the border with the short size, but it is better to be on smaller side as the skin and tail have some stretch, but you can't make a too-long Alpinist skin any shorter.
