The Fulcrum Red Wind 80mm Clincher Wheelset offers dish-like aerodynamics, but it won't be negatively affected by side or off-center headwinds. To accomplish this, Fulcrum used wind-tunnel research and optimized the rim's shape. That wind-cheating profile is made in carbon fiber and bonded to an aluminum rim to form an ultra-aero wheel that's incredibly strong and light.
The carbon deep-section isn't just an aerodynamic add-on though. Fulcrum uses an exclusive coupling system between the aluminum braking surface, rim bed, and the carbon deep-section. The resulting structure enhances the rims' overall stiffness and durability, and affords consistent and powerful braking.
The rim uses Fulcrum's MoMag system, which eliminates the need for spoke access holes on the upper bridge. To do this, Fulcrum uses a magnet to guide spoke nipples to their respective location. The lack of spoke holes on the bridge eliminates stress risers as well as the need for rim tape, and more importantly, enhances the rim's overall stiffness for better performance accelerating, turning, or braking.
The rim also features Directional Rim Spoke Coupling (DRSC). It perfectly aligns the rim, spokes, and nipples to provide an equal tensioning value throughout the structure of the wheel. And, self-locking nipples prevent de-tensioning of the spokes.
Fulcrum uses a 2:1 spoke count on the rear wheel. This helps to reduce slacking of drive-side spokes during acceleration. The resulting lacing prevents loss of energy and lengthens the fatigue life of the wheel. The overall, structural-enhancing theme continues in the hub.
The aluminum hub body was already stiff, but Fulcrum felt they could enhance it further. The Red Winds' rear hub features an oversized flange on the drive side. This adds torsional rigidity, which directly translates into efficient power transfer. The hubs also use Fulcrum's Anti-Rotation System; the spoke and hub interface has been designed to create an un-movable whole to prevent loosening or twisting of the spokes.
The hubs house Fulcrum's Ultra Smooth Bearings (USB) which have proved to be 50 percent smoother than standard bearings. They're also lighter weight, and last longer. The Red Wind 80mm Clincher also uses
