No funky smell, it holds liquids.

My bottle didn't come with any funky smell, but did come with some decently cool graphics for a water bottle, and it has not leaked like 50% of my other water bottles tend to do occasionally. It does a fairly marvelous job at being a bottle.

Nauseating offgassing

These bottles offgas like a new vinyl shower curtain. Even after cold washing with gentle detergent, these bottles make your water taste like plasticizer.

Backcountry's website states these are BPA free, yet the bottom of each bottle lacks a recycling number and symbol, leaving you no clue as to what materials were used in
manufacturing. The nauseating odor leads me to believe this is not food-grade plastic.
