Get chubby.

The recent deluge of new "standards" ranging from bottom brackets to wheel sizes has proven the off-road industry to be every bit as schizo as Van Gogh, with the number of new must-have innovations beginning to outnumber the stars in a Dutch nightscape. That said, we admit that there's definitely something to the oversized tires that inspired FOX Racing Shox to resize the 34 Float 27.5 Plus 120 3Pos-Adj Fit4 Fork for more tire clearance.

In order to accommodate tires of up to 3.25in, the 34 Float Plus has wider crown spacing and lower castings, and the axle is increased to 110mm. This allows for the wider rims and tires of the plus-sized movement. Still, while fat, three-inch tires make for a plusher ride with way more tread on the trail, the real masterpiece of this exhibition is the fork itself.

For 2016, the steerer, crown, uppers, lowers, and Float Air spring all adapt many of the technologies first pioneered in the Float 36 series. In addition to stiffening the chassis, these changes help the new Float 34 Plus fork shed around 200 grams of claimed weight compared to previous, non-Plus model. Of course, weight savings are great on paper, but the fork really makes its bacon by dint of on-trail functionality. With the upgrade to the all-new Fit4 Damper, the new Float 34 is pulling mad pig.

The new Fit4's Damper shaft porks-out to 10mm for increased oil flow to the base valve, and the fork rides high for quick, controlled recovery during everything from big, square hits to successive, small impacts. The new 3-position Fit4 system also replaces CTD, changing the names from the overly-prescriptive categories of Climb, Trail, and Descend to a graduating scale covering Firm, Medium, and Open. While this change may read like an exercise in semantics, it entails a radical realignment of the 34 Float's capabilities that addresses virtually every issue we've had with CTD's damper in the past.

The most welcome change is that Fit4 migrates the adjustable sub settings from CTD's median Trail mode to the new Open setting. Open encompasses both Descend and Trail in order to take full advantage of the fork's tendency to ride high, combining better small-bump compliance with more confident tracking across successive impacts and rough terrain. The Medium setting is much firmer now, handling duties ranging from rooty trails to climbing, and the Firm setting is now largely relegated to fast hardpack and logging road transitions. Though it's by no means built for DH, the 34 Float Plus' 120mm of cushion combine with the plush, grabby ride of 3-inch tires for a setup that transcends the limitations of XC.

FOX's tinkering wasn't just confined to the damper, though, as the Float air spring now omits the negative coil in favor of a self-equalizing air assembly. This is similar to the air spring chamber system that made the re-worked 36 series such a success, and the omission of a coil spring is a key contributor to the overall weight loss. Finally, a new system of spacers lets you easily temper the air shock's volume for dialing the mid stroke.
