Designed for the competitive racer weighing every last component in search of dropping mere grams, the 2017 FOX Racing Shox 32 Float SC 29 100 3Pos-Adj FIT 4 Boost Fork with 51mm of Rake asserts its featherweight superiority over pudgier forks with its redesigned Step Cast chassis and lightweight internals. Saving approximately 255g or 15% from a similarly spec'd Factory 32 Float, the new Step Cast is the lightest cross-country fork conjured up by the suspension wizards at FOX.
Coined as Step Cast by FOX due to its stepped lower legs, the new chassis is 10mm narrower than the previous iteration for a ridiculously light fork that maximizes efficiency in cross-country racing scenarios. Despite the narrower profile, the stepped lower legs still provide clearance for the disc brake mount. Not only does this stepped lower provide ample clearance for brake hardware, but it also significantly reduces weight with a hollow lower section that's the result of shortening the upper tube length and raising the magnesium lower assembly. Although the new chassis is 10mm narrower than the previous version, it still accommodates 2.3 inch tires for plenty of traction and bump compliance on technical courses where wider rubber is warranted.
This particular version features a stiffness-enhancing BOOST 15 x 110mm Kabolt thru-axle, which inspires unflappable confidence for rallying through the rough stuff and rocketing out of corners. In fact, the addition of BOOST alleviates the excess flex of a 29in wheel, delivering levels of stiffness we'd expect from a 26in wheel. To increase race-day agility, the fork comes offset with a 51mm rake for snappier handling for negotiating tight corners and rock-littered climbs.
The fork's smooth, sensitive feel remains unchanged from the Factory 32 Float, thanks to 32mm stanchions and a lighter version of the Fit4 damper giving riders 3-poisition adjust (Open, Medium, and Firm) and 22 clicks of low-speed compression damping in Open Mode. The Float Air spring remains unchanged, and that's a good thing if you're seeking smooth travel and tunable support with the addition of air volume spacers. Its self-equalizing negative air spring provides a plush linear feel in the stock configuration of 2 air volume spacers. Adding more (it handles 4) increases the fork's ramp-up and reluctance to bottoming out on bigger drops and trail obstacles.

- Q & A
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
Narrower; significantly lighter, and stiffer? Yup.
I was rather concerned about how this fork would ride after seeing it on the bike I was demoing, but it turned out to not only shatter expectations, it put all concerns of flex to rest rather quickly.
Even after dropper 3/4 pound compared to the standard Float 29, there was zero noticeable sacrifice in performance. Fox claims that the Step Cast forks are stiffer than the standard float, and I would be inclined to believe them.
