Few names in the business are as synonymous with cockpit feel as the former saddle manufacturer, Fizik. We say former saddle manufacturer not because Fizik is no longer making saddles, but because it's expanded its cockpit offerings to include every point of rider/machine contact, including kit like the men's M5 Uomo Boa Shoes. The M5 Boa represents Fizik's second generation of shoes in that it replaces its predecessor's ratcheting buckle and hook-and-loop straps with a Boa wire enclosure, signaling that Fizik is ready to add the top-shoes trophy to its impressive list of saddle palmares.

As with the ratcheting buckle version, the M5 Boa features uppers comprising Microtex synthetic leather, mesh, and anti-scratch genuine leather. Fizik places the latter around the toe box and heel cup in order to resist abrasion while traversing talus slopes on foot. The lightweight mesh fills the voids between the leather sections for a heightened sense of cooling ventilation. And at the interior, the soft Microtex liner provides a lasting comfort over bone-rattling trails in balmy conditions.

The Fizik Superlight insole is the same model used in the M5's road counterpart, the R5 Uomo. And while it's not custom moldable like with the line-topping M1's 3D-Flex insole, it does help to absorb trail vibration and support your arch to alleviate metatarsal hot spots. A complement of aggressive lugs affords positive traction on those scree-scrambling moments when the bike has to be shouldered. The stiff, carbon-reinforced nylon outsole ensures that no pedal energy is lost to flex during those moments when you're testing whether or not that rock chute is actually climbable.

Well made, watch out for the ankle

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 44.5

I have a pair of R5B (road version) which are great. I wanted to replace the hand-me-down Specialized FACT mountain shoes my dad gave me with something new (and less flashy.)

These appear really well made and are pretty good looking.

However - they have a very high ankle and the cutout is really small. This caused the shoe to push real hard into my ankle bone + the vein that runs across it. On first glance they fit real well just trying them on, but putting the cleats on and going for a ride immediately made it clear these were not going to work. Some people must have a higher ankle bone than me, because these were unridable for me. My other mountain shoes and road shoes are lower cut and have a much larger ankle cutout so that's not a problem... First time I have experienced this problem.

All you expect from Fizik shoes plus BOA

These are my third pair of Fizik shoes. I've had two pairs of Fizik Road shoes. This is my first pair of Cross/MTB/SPD shoes from Fizik, and my first shoes with the BOA system. I'm loving the BOA system. So much so, that I'll not be going back to Velcro straps in the future.
Fizik shoes are STIFF!!! For putting the power down in cycling STIFF is good!! Do not mistake STIFF for uncomfortable. Fizik shoes are made in the tradition of fine Italian footwear. They are COMFORTABLE. They are supportive. As you'd expect from fine/expensive Italian shoes, they give the sensation of gloves for your feet. Fizik shoes are true to size. A smidge on the narrow side, but true to stated length.

nice shoe, enjoy the boa system

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: 43

Great shoe, good quality materials and nice design. Fits a bit large and would recommend a size smaller then you normally wear. Exchanging for one size smaller.

    like these

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

i've used these a few times for ...yes, spin class. i vowed i'd never do those. they are comfortable (i have narrow feet) and very easy to get in and out of- easier than other cycling shoes like my sidi's. one outward pull of the ratchety thing and you're out. getting in is easy too since the cables become quite loose upon exiting. shove your foot in and wind it up snug as you want. perfect fit. easy to tighten on the fly too. they are quite stiff but have grippy lugs on the bottom. i use seperate insoles in them. the dotted fabric is a little odd looking; not great on the style points.
