    Great Approach Shoe

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs large

I thought that this shoe ran a little large. I had to size down a half size for this shoe from other 5.10 shoes. For example I use a 7.0 and for this shoe I had to size to a 6.5.

I really like the guide Tennie though. It is comfortable and climbs really well for an approach shoe, and 5.10 dot rubber grips great. I would expect similar quality to that of other 5.10 products and I usually can get one or two seasons out of these shoes.

Can be great, depending on what you need

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

I've worn a pair of Tennies almost to shreds over the course of about three years, all across North America.

    These shoe are great for:
    - Technical climbing. They climb better than just about all other contenders.
    - Approaches where you are covering a lot of low fifth class / fourth class rock.
    - Carrying on your harness for walkoff descents---they are relatively low-profile.

    These shoes fall short for:
    - Approaches on mud / scree / sand / any kind of "sloppy" terrain. They do not grip.
    - Really long approaches: the footbed/support is good, but it's not nearly as good as a dedicated hiking shoe.

Overall, I'd say on the approach shoe spectrum of "climbing shoe" to "hiking shoe," these are as close to "climbing shoe" as you can get. If that's what you want, then this is the shoe for you!

Size them snug if you plan to climb in them. The leather upper will stretch and breathe.

    Disappointed

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 8.5

Wanted so much to try these, I have friends who swear by 5/10s and I needed something 'sticky' for steep climbs. But they feel so stiff all around my feet, although the size is good. I wore them around the house for less than 1/2 hr and had to pull them off. I usually wear 'Ahnu' hiking boots, right out of the box. Maybe its my feet, but love to hear suggestions. I will try other models of 5/10s, for women, if they have them.

    Sticky and Fit

Got these approach shoes for my girl friend. She enjoys the stickiness of the Five Ten rubber and really has no complains about the fit. Glad I got the ride approach shoe for her.

Yes, I am male. Yes, I love this shoe.

For some reason this shoe fits me better in the womens sizes than the mens. Anyways, I have put this shoe through the wringer. I have climbed up to 5.7 with it, and done both non technical and technical mountaineering with these. They hold up super well, are comfortable, and the sticky 5.10 rubber provides peace of mind on those steep slabs. They hold up to cheese-grater scree fantastically, and I can see these shoes lasting for a long time. It did run a bit large for me. If I have to go with a womans size, I usually wear a 9. In this shoe I wear a 8.

    Comfy and Sticky!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 8.5

I took these on a climbing trip without having time to break them in, so I expected there to be some discomfort. I am happy to say there was none! From day one to nine they only became more comfortable, and the rubber was sticky to the max for all of the scrambling I did!

    Comfortable

These approach shoes are awesome! I have been looking for approach shoes for a while and I decided to get 5.10 Tennie shoe because they have really good arch support! The only problem I have with them is that I put them on once without untying the laces and it pushed the material down in the back which ruined them when I did this. They will now forever dig into the back of my heels. other than that they are perfect, great rubber very sticky! They are also breathable my feet never feel overheated

I'm like Spiderman, MY BOOTS ARE STICKY!

    These shoes are darn tough!

I feel like I can do anything when I have them on. SUPER STICKY, comfy and stiff.

I've used these shoes to approach climbs, pack packing and just hiking around. I normally wear chacos when I hike. When I need more shoe... these are my go to shoes!

One thing I like about them when camping is that they are fast and easy to slide on when getting out of my tent.

They do get warm for sure but I don't really over heat.

I find that they fit true to size.

I'm like Spiderman, MY BOOTS ARE STICKY!

The best shoes on the planet.

Bold statement... I know. Not only are these the most comfortable shoes ever- they go EVERYWHERE. Awesome for hiking, climbing, jumping, running, etc. I have climbed up to 5.10 (no pun intended) routes in these shoes alone and I'm a pretty mediocre climber. The only downfall to these shoes is the rubber wont last forever, that's a tradeoff you get from the performance and the insane grip- that, and I gave a pair to my mom and she said they mark up her white-tiled kitchen. C'est la vie. I still claim they are the best shoes ever and I never forget them on an adventure.

I find them pretty true to size actually- I wear an 8.5 typically and the 8.5's fit great. These shoes do stretch a little bit because of the leather/suede upper.

Bomber stick! Like a lizard on a rock

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

These shoes do what they were intended for and more! I have scrambled up super sketchy approaches on all different kinds of rock. Hiked more miles than I care for. Climbed wide cracks and alpine routes in these babies! They have saved my rear from taking some major falls. Forgot them once on a climbing trip. Was so upset I almost cried! They are a part of me when I'm out there. They have a hole in the side and the dot soles are almost completely gone, but they STILL stick and are still awesome!

Hiking/scrambling they get the job done

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs large

I've had this shoe and put it through the wringer! Wear them all the time. Contrary to what most of the reviews are saying about the shoes fitting a narrow foot, I have a wide foot and they fit really well. It was so long ago that I first broke them in, it's hard for me to remember if they were ever uncomfortable. I love the dots! Solid shoe for the outdoors and mine are still in super great shape. They definitely hold up!

    Super comfy, super sticky.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I got these shoes mainly for low grade climbing but they are so comfortable I wear them hiking and for every day stuff. I have a narrow foot and they fit me great! The dot rubber is the stickiest sole money can buy. :) Keep in mind however that dot rubber is not a good sole for snow/ice, but they are my go to shoe for spring/summer/fall. 5.10 lives up to it's name, it's one of my favorite pairs of shoes! AND, they're super cute.

    Really tight and narrow

These are really tight and narrow, but come to think of it, aren't all approach shoes tight and narrow? At least all the ones I've tried on are. Just a heads up these have the round dots on the sole (I only bring that up because I know some people that don't like that style tread), but like all Five Ten's they are super grippy!

      Take the time

When you are a mother and a business woman and love the outdoors; it's beyond the word "challenge" to find time to play outdoors.
I do my very best to get out once a week and hike or snowshoe.
I needed a new pair of shoes; something that reminded me of the good ole days of wandering and wondering.
So, I went on line and tried to find a pair of shoes that would be good for every aspect of my life and really great for heading out to play when an unexpected moment arrives.
These shoes are my new best friend. I had so much fun with them. I took them through snow, water, rocks, pine needles. Walked across trees that have fallen all across the trail and then back to work. They are the support I need to make this crazy life more balanced. Tomorrow they are off doing photography with my daughter.
Take the time to enjoy perfect moments in everyday; a moment can be as long as a blink of an eye, but it can be a memory a great memory for a lifetime.

How do these shoes fit? I wear a 6 in...

How do these shoes fit? I wear a 6 in street shoes, and 6.5 in running shoes. I am trying to find a pair of approach shoes to replace my La sportiva boulder X shoes which were too small in both the women's 6 and 6.5. How does the sizing run compared to brands like La Sportiva or Scarpa?

      Best Answer

I wear a 7 in street shoes and a 7.5 in running shoes. I tried these on in the 7.5 and they were roomy and comfortable, but I got the size 7 because I wanted them a little smaller for class 3 climbing. They are actually so comfortable I wear them all the time! (P.S. I have a narrow foot and they fit me great!).
